Great Band - great memories. I played in a Group in the early sixties at fabulous long since gone venues such as The Bridge House E16, Dukes Head E6, Greyhound-Seven Kings, Royal Oak-Goodmayes, Roundhouse-Barking, Church Elm-Dagenham (where I seem to recall, Jimmy Page had a valued Gibson stolen), Double Six-Basildon etc etc . Thanks, Chas, Dave, Albert, Joe etc for keeping us all going.

The great chas hodges completely underrated. He could play joanna like it just came off the ration and Dave was great to join in. This was much better music than you think.Jools Holland respects them, and Jools knows how to play jazz. I think think the Shepherds Bush Empire is closed for the duration, but is mentioned actually in Only Fools and Horses "From a mush in shepherd's bush" by the great John Sullivan. You stick a pony in your pocket, I take a suitcase from the van, but if you want the best 'uns but you dont ask questions then bruvver I'm your man. As where it all comes from is a mystery, like the changing of the seasons or the tides of the sea. But here's the one that's driving me berzerk, Why do only fools and horses work? John Sullivan wanted Chas n Dave to sing it on the titles, but they weren't available, so he sung it himself. That was just a copy tape submitted to the BBC as a prelim copy, but because Chas n Dave werent available they went with John Sullivan, the writer, his version. He never meant it it to go public he wanted Chas n Dave to do it. He aésp wrote "Dear John" and you can hear him singing on various BBC things- the BBC was very cheap and wouldnt pay repeat fees. You'll hear John Sullivan's voice on a lot of things, for example Citizen Smith he is singing on that. One of the best comic writers of my generation but the BBC wwere so cheap they didnt pay him for it

In Newcastle's promotion season 1983/84 we played Chelsea at StJames Park, there was quite a bit of bad feelings between the rival fans, Chelsea had brought a fair few fans up. Then at half time the loudspeaker started blasting out a Chas and Dave song, I can't quite remember which one, the atmosphere completely changed, I think whoever was playing the record thought it was a bit of a pizz take but in reality they probably stopped a lot of people getting filled in.

The great chas hodges very mch underrated. He could do rinky-dink joanna like nobody else. He CHOSE to play in a cockney style. As a cockney myself, I sing along which is a bit tricky considering I live in Budapest so aitch-dropping and t-backing is not easy in Hungarian, never mind I battle on. The great chas hodges very much unrerrataed. I have been trying to do the lyrics in German, Hungarian and Roma which is lets face it a bit tricky to do the "Sideboard Song" in Hungarian, especially if you don't know the words for "Sideboard" nor "Song". I went with szekewnyi kabinnet

You try singing cckney songs in Hungarian, something has to give. The words go all OK but the rhíme-shheme tends to go, If I do "We use to go fishing in the old canal", I have to do aranzhál a kicsit duna, then I have to somehow rhyme that with a piano tuna or something, so it al goes bit out of whack. Singing cockney songs in Hungarian is not easy and let's e frank, or at least Francis, I am extremely bad at it. What I generally do is slip into French so it becomes mon homme viueux a dit suivre le camion, or in hungarian a regy ferfri beszels Lloyd Marie van, but I haven't worked out the translation for "dilly-dally" yet, the closest I got is "oda-vissza", there and back, but it is not a very accurate translation. Even in FFrench it is tricky, ne pas rester en route, don't hang around. The great Chas Hodges may he rest in peace- As a cpclmey O never met him personally but I he was a brilliant artist. Much underapressiated. I wish that I could write a love song for him, to show the way I feel. He taught me how to play the piano that is really weird. He never knew it, but he taught me without knowing it the score and how to play a it of basic piano. He he never klnew it. In memoriaum Chas Hodges.. He has given me so much pleasure in my life I teach English to Hungarians and I use chas and dave to make it go really double-quick and pun and stuff. No need for all the textbooks, just chas and dave with quick wit and punning and I can tech English to Hungarianss- I know that sounds stupid but it is better than what they learn at school which is very formal English. So they get the dropped aitches and glottal stops off me. It is really hard to get a Hungarian to do a glottal stop, and H-dropping isn't easy eaither. I've lived in Budapest for seven years so I am kinda used to a Hungarian English accent, but my natural accent is how chas and dave speak. I also roll my R's in a suffolk mannor, and Hungarians can't do that either. On purpose I took my Hungarian wife to Machynlleth as that is just impossible for her to pronounce. On the other hand I can't pronounce Szölosynyáraló which is a bit of a pity as that is where we live
