This one is a cheesy banger, I love it 😂 Will never forget when I re-discovered this song in 2018 and played it a couple of times, my daughter (then 5) suddenly asked: "Mommy will you play me that song with a man with long hair making angry faces?". I did a double take 😂. She meant Marco! And she absolutely fell in love with this song. Now we mostly play Nightwish CDs in the car 😃

I don't remember how exactly I got into Nightwish but I'm pretty sure it was this song when it came out. I got all their albums then, and the two at the time with Marko were definitely my favorites. Beauty of the Beast (of, not and, which they also have as a song) is one of those precursor long, involved songs and I haven't seen too many people react to it yet. Maybe because there don't seem to be high quality live versions uploaded. End of All Hope was another favorite and I think they have recently uploaded an official video to it on the Nighwish channel. SO GLAD you did the original video. None other version can come even close to the power in this! :) You hit the very point of this song: It is aggressive-as-hell, in-your-face! - no excuses blaster that should wake up the dead and the deaf!! Then the combination of the said and the ethereal, angelic voice of Tarja. This contrast is the hook of the original Nightwish - something that no other band could provide. It caught my and so many others' attention from the get-go. Can we also talk about those camera pans in vertical. The shot on Tarja's face at the intro, moving up - and later the super-closeup shots straigth above Marco in the chorus. Corgeous! And the bass - "Döidi as hell!" :) 'Nuff said. Then we have the super low frequency effect - going all the way down to the 40-30 Hz range - at the very start of the chorus. You kids watching this video on your mobile phones - do yourself a favor and listen to this once with high quality headphones or a speaker system with a subwoofer. You'll find all kinds of new things there! Oh, and @Chase - it's an inhale. ;)

This was actually my first Nightwish song too, and my second symphonic metal song in general. The first one was "Cry For The Moon" by Epica from their "We Will Take You With Us" live studio recording. I remember listening to those 2 songs when I was 13 and thinking "WOW, I had no idea you could sing like that...these women are INCREDIBLE, they sound like actual angels!". Now I'm 24 and Epica and Nightwish are still my two favourite bands of all time. It has been quite a journey.
@Lolliedieb4 жыл бұрын
There is one song I would like to request - that I believe will be barely requested, because its very rarely played, but for it is important, because it shows how important the fans are for Tuomas and the whole band. I am speaking about Higher then Hope - released 2004 on the Once album and dedicated Marc Brueland, who was a fan terminally ill (cancer) at the time the song was created. You even can hear him speaking some words on the track. After the Once world tour it got a rare gem to be played live - mostly it happened during the US legs of the Dark Passion Play and Imaginerium world tour when the band did know that some of the family members of Marc were in the audience. How important this one is for the band you can see that there is exactly one show (San Diego on Oct 6th, 2012) where Floor did sing the song - and it was only her 5th show with the band. So she learned it (after learning the whole set list in short time) just for this one show and you can see her holding back tears when performing it, dedicating it fully to Marc's family - turning and bowing to them at the end. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYaXc6J9a52Fp9U

In my opinion it is one of the more underrated songs and a hidden gem of sorts and also one of my personal favorites. It comes from the same album Once like a bunch of songs you've already reacted to so far (songs like Ghost Love Score, Romanticide, Dark Chest of Wonders, Nemo, and this one, for example all come from the album Once).

The song that introduced me to Nightwish and the moment i know i was going to be hooked forever. Man, the memories. And on the thought about the radio hit - i can clearly remember the late autumn of 2004 when from every radio station and TV channel there were basically 3 songs blasting all the time: Usher - Yeah, Eminem - Just Lose It and Nightwish - Wish I Had an Angel.

Emppu is so vital in the live performances, and most will never see it. It is true he is a prankster, and runs around drinking beer and flinging picks while he plays flawlessly. He also is Tuomas' means of communicating and passing along tweaks during the concerts. I would love to see an unbridled Emppu sometime though just melting faces for 15 to 20 minutes alone, because i am sure he can. During the concerts Emppu plays vital role for the band, and ontop of that usually is the only guitar on stage. How many metal bands have usually only 1 electric guitar active, not many? Chase you are awesome man, love your commentaries, one thing i have learned over this past year, learning and listening to all things Nightwish. They are completely unpredictable and can do whatever they can imagine, awesomely.

Can't wait to see this! Wish I Had An Angel was the first Nightwish song I've ever listened to, right around the time when KZbin had its internet boom (2006 or so). I thought "a band called Nightwish and a song called Wish I Had An Angel? Sounds cheesy but ok" and I had no idea it was gonna be the start of a 15-year and growing love of a band and a genre 😂 It’s also one of their more “commercial” songs (akin to Nemo, Elán, Amaranth, etc.) but still has the classic Nightwish formula
@billhooks694 жыл бұрын
I would say your love affair with Nightwish started around the same time as mine. I have been a metal head since I can remember and I like to think I have brought my kids up well, at least from a musical perspective. This was confirmed when my eldest daughter brought home the Nightwish - Highest Hopes (Best of) album. And snap the first song on that album and the first one I ever heard of theirs is "Wish I Had An Angel". Bang I was hooked. I agree this song is slightly more on the commercial side, whether it was intended or not, I feel this song has become a bit of an Nightwish anthem
@kenjinpiniteu4 жыл бұрын

Marco does guest vocals on the new Therion album Leviathan, recommend the song Tuonela. Been trying to get Tank to give one of the founding fathers of symphonic metal a try for a while without success. This song is different than their old stuff which is a lot more operatic. I would also highly recommend some older Therion, like Sodom and Gomorrah, Cults of the Shadow, or Ginnungagap just to name a few. I recommend the studio recordings as the live versions are different sounding because of the symphony/choir. Closest live to the studio recordings I've heard is the Live at Waken 2001.

Cool! This is one of Tarja's very best, I think. I spent several days playing this (just a smidge too loudly) in my office at work back when the album came out. I think Tuomas just decided, "I think I'll write something a bit more commercial." and then he goes and spits this gem out. He's... he's pretty good. Also, just as important, thumbs up for Chase!

Well the song is the main song to a movie back then called "Alone in the Dark" with Christian Slater and Tara Reid. So I assume that played a role when writing the song

I agree with Rest Calm, Slow Love Slow (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmfPZXtsbZ55qq8 this one will definitely be a surprise!) and High Hopes, but I'll add Turn Loose the Mermaids kzbin.info/www/bejne/enu2ZppqYtVmgZY to the list. This is another one-of-the-kind song among the Nightwish songs.

this is by far not my favorite nightwish song, but your analysis was, as per usual, spot on and helped me appreciate the song that much more!! as for what to do next, i would love to see you tackle another one of their ballads like ‘swanheart’ or ‘meadows of heaven’ :) have a good week, dude!

Little late here, I haven't listened to the album version on this in along time. But that little "digital effect" is an analog keyboard or at least, the sample of an analog keyboard. Its very obviously that classic oscillator sound, I would guess maybe something like a Roland Jupiter or even a Moog. Heck, maybe even just an analog plugin from a DAW

This song was the beginning of my love to Nightwish. Before this I've heard Nemo but back then didn't like it to much 😅 but Wish I had an Angel... I love it since I've heard this for a first time. Sooo long time ago, good memories 😌
