*Spoiler / Explanation* Lambert became the monster because you gave him that occult blue fluid to drink when you found him in the hole at the beginning of the game. You thought it was water or alcohol, but it was the same agent that was mutating the rats.

That same fluid is also from Amnesia: Rebirth, but Lambert turned into a different-looking monster compared to the ghouls in the past game (probably because the water is tainted from the war).

you are correct , but i am not really sure WHERE the game is set , if we are on the hibderburg line and its 1917 the americans have already joined the war and could have given some of their weapons to the french soldiers as backup ammo.

It's main purpose is not a light source. When the lights are off the monster will actively hunt. Whereas with them on he will only hunt if their is a loud enough commotion. Yes, if you don't like the management system you won't like it whatever it's function is. However it's more than just a "fuel the generator to see" mechanic.
