also, after you add the coolant, run the bike again to allow coolant to flow and fill the empty areas. then check it again and top off. if you dont, you will run the risk of overheating due to not enough coolant. also, when running it, leave the rad cap off until it starts to boil. cut off the engine and put the cap back of. allows the system to burp air bubbles out.

Another easy way that I use on my 09 1125r is this; drain coolant, fill with distilled water, remove coolant return to radiator hose and route it to a container, with bike running add distilled water to the radiator as fast as it comes out the return hose. This will thoroughly remove all coolant. Then do this same process with your choice of coolant. I prefer Motul motocool factory line to engine ice, the specs are better.

Another way to get air out of the system is to put the radiator cap on and shake the bike back and forth vigorously, then take the cap back off, do this until your coolant level stops dropping in your radiator. It's called burping the bike. Certain bikes (like mine) either have the bleeder screw in a hard to reach place or don't have one at all. Air in the system will damage the water pump over time.

Exactly what I was thinking. I'd almost bet after you run the engine for a few minutes and fill the coolant ports in the engine block that you could fit the rest of that jug of coolant perfectly. Do this before you put all the fairings back on so you can fill the overflow reservoir since it should pull from there to keep the radiator full.

A key note, he used pre-mixed engine ice. If using concentrate you must mix with distilled water to proper levels, refer to your owner manual.

A good tip for filling the system back up. Pump one of the coolant lines with your hand by squeezing and releasing several times. This will force any remaining air out of the system and will allow you to top off the radiator. After a couple squeezes you will notice the coolant level in the radiator will drop.

Good job mate, very comprehensive. One thing you maybe should have added is that you should run the bike for a bit after adding the engine ice then check the fluid level again because it can sometimes have a few air bubbles in there.

Hi chaseontwowheels, great video but 1 thing worries me. When the engine is hot (as shown in your video), I would personally wait a few hours until the engine is completely cold. Because replacing the hot coolant with cool air runs the risk of cracking your head or some other damage. As an engineer I know rapid cooling of aluminium and other alloys is really bad in ANY engine.
@xXFastFingersXx
@xXFastFingersXx 9 жыл бұрын
DirtRider500R Yeah I agree it will be linear, but you have to take into account people from cool climates, like myself (UK) with a low abient temperture. Assuming the coolent hasnt been cooled and stood in open space we can assume it will be the same temperture as the ambient air. 20 degrees C would be the average for summer time here in the UK, less in other parts of the world. I'm not trying to be a "smart arse"or a "know it all", I just dont think its good advice dumping fresh coolent into a hot engine. No matter how good the grade of alloy, it will cool a lot quicker than it is intended to. This is called quenshing in engineering.

Don't forget to cycle the system again by running the bike and leaving the cap off of the radiator. This will let out and air pockets in the cooling system. If you don't it can cause the engine to overheat.

I like these How To's. I've got a Yamaha Thundercat from '97 and haven't changed the coolant since i bought it nearly 2 years ago. I wasnt sure about this whole cycle "put dest. water in, turn on, let it run out, again, then coolant...." and my bike runs just fine... But now i saw how to do it and its very simple, i'll do it in the coming weeks, good job chase.

don't put the cap on until you are finished. as the coolant drops, add fluid. once the air is out the level will stop dropping.

Only thing I could suggest would be to squeeze the radiator hose as you refill it. This will help push out any air bubbles in the system. Not sure if you did this but it wasn't mentioned so that's my 2 cents. Otherwise..Good tutorial.
@zbangin749

Bleed the the radiator cooling system with the radiator cap off and a funnel in it with little extra coolant sitting in it. As the engine runs the extra coolant bubbles as air escapes and the coolant fills in. Idk if the r6 or motorcycles in general have a way of doing that by itself lol but thats how i do it on my car and thats how its done on other cars. And FYI to those asking if its bad to mix a higher water to coolant ratio, its not. WATER IS THE BEST WAY TO KEEP YOUR ENGINE COOL but chemicals and additives in coolant are designed to keep it from freezing in extremely cold temperatures.
@Ohmz2000
@Ohmz2000 7 жыл бұрын
Luke Tabayoyong I was gonna say the exact same thing about bleeding the air out, if you don't sometimes the bike will hiccup and overheat a bit.. And about the water being mixed in, that's true, but engine ice works best in the mix it comes with, dropping your engine temp by up to 10 degrees, if you mix it with too much water it dilutes it more .. I'm from Texas, so I need all the coolness I can get lol..
@grdv10
@grdv10 9 жыл бұрын
You kinda forgot the step to make sure there is no air in the coolant system. I don't know if this particular bike handles that on it's own but I know there's plenty of other bikes that don't. I usually squeezed the hell out of the hoses on the bike until there weren't any bubbles coming out of the radiator cap.
@Kevindeuxieme
@Kevindeuxieme 9 жыл бұрын
grdv10 Running the bike should take care of that, especially if you put the expected amount of coolant in. Doing it manually doesn't hurt, though.
@rickt2419
@rickt2419 8 жыл бұрын
This particular bike will circulate the air bubble up & out of the radiator in the the expansion tank (as its radiator's physical opening/cap is way higher than the highest point of the engine). But remember to let the engine cool completely (I generally let it cool over night then open the radiator cap to top off with coolant and refill the expansion tank to the Full mark). As you and Kevin mentioned, squeeze the hose won't hurt either.

Older video I know but this just saved me. Basically a friend of mine overheated my bike because he's not used to liquid cooled and his is air-cooled. He's been practicing with my R6 bc his is a 500cc and needs mine for his full license test. He ran the coolant dry. I went to fill it up but Yamaha made it so I can't see the fill line and have to take off the fairings just to access the reservoir just to drain it. At 2am after the gym, in the dark. What a pain in the ass. I just now saw how it was emptied. Damn. Rip. Ah well. Next bike is going to be naked. I love the look of fairings but they're annoying. A Gixxer has 1 panel. Mine has 4 and 99 bolts. Thanks Yamaha Edit: Just saw how you can drain it out of the bottom of the bike. I had taken my reservoir off the bike and poured out coolant until the full line. Then reinstalled. Plus all the fairings.

Good job on the how to. Keep them comin. Interesting how different the process is between bikes. Mine has to be drained at the water pump and at the radiator, along with using thread sealant when replacing the bolts, then you have to "burp" the hoses when re-filling with coolant...

Why didn't you drain the way the manual instructs - disconnecting the hose directly to the right of the screw you removed? Seems to be the lowest point of the radiators circulation, so there'd likely be a lot of sediment you're not getting rid of by removing just the bolt you've suggested.

wouldnt you circulate the engine ice coolant too? as you did with water? because once starting the bike it completely flushed the old coolant out and now theres water there, so wouldnt you need to flush the water out using the new coolant? because somehow i dont know about you, but i wouldnt want to keep any water in there mixed with my coolant.

coolants are a mix of 50/50 antifreeze and water lol. a little bit extra water shouldn't be that big a deal. it would probably raise the freezing point and lower the boiling point by a few degrees tho
