I just watched an ad that I was so sure was a Chaser segment. It starts with this army mechanic talking about being in Afghanistan, that it was so hard because you see what life is worth, what it is like for people who have nothing [clips are shown of the desolation in Afghanistan, of people struggling to live, of homelessness, poverty, of towns in ruins]. THen we're shown the mechanic, and she's saying how difficult it was to come back from that, to transition from the military [clip: PTSD educational poster], how difficult it was to get a job [shots are shown of her at home on a laptop].and then the next three minutes are about how she went to this place that helps people get jobs and how helpful they were, and her spiritual journey through this time [clip: dramatic recreation of successful job interview] ... It was an ad for "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints." This wasn't a parody. And these were either incredibly elaborate set-ups or those were shots of real people in a war zone struggling to survive. Either way, people are struggling to survive in Afghanistan, and army veterans - especially ones who actually saw combat - are struggling with PTSD, and this church *used their suffering for an ad.* ... ... Just... what.
