Get ready for even more epic adventures in the stunning Superstition Mountains of Arizona! Join me on part two of my two-part series where, after hiking down an abandoned road, I discover even more hidden caves, more breathtaking rock formations, and even more stunning fall foliage! In part two of this expedition, we will push our limits, climbing, crawling, and exploring every inch of these ancient mountains. Don't miss out on this thrilling hiking experience through one of Arizona's most famous destinations! If you have a passion for hiking Arizona, then join me on this extraordinary journey.
Nestled in the heart of the Superstition Mountains of Arizona lies the famous Route 88, or the Apache Trail as it's locally known. This 40-mile stretch of road boasts a rich history and offers some of the most breathtaking views in the country. Originally used by the Apache tribe to traverse the rugged terrain, the road was later expanded in the early 1900s to allow for mining transportation. After severe flooding in 2019, a 5 mile unpaved section of the road was closed for public safety. As of now, the only way to see the road and get down into Fish Creek is to hike in-- but what a hike it is!
So get ready to climb, crawl and marvel at the wonders of nature in one of the most picturesque locations in Arizona. Let's hit the road together and embark on a journey filled with excitement and beauty!

Thanks, it really is! I'm planning a trip back to explore the other direction of the wash before they start work on the road.

That road used to be a very beautiful drive. Crazy, lol, but beautiful. But i guess with it closed, it is very peaceful back there.

It really looks like it'd be a wild ride, and plus there's additional wear on it from not being maintained for some extra bumpiness. But you're exactly right: its very peaceful without the cars, and a lot of fun hiking down what feels like an abandoned road!

If you are ever on the west side of Phoenix out by Tonopah, there is a mountain called camelback. Out there you can find a lot of cool rocks like desert rose's and a lot more.

Thanks for the tip! Haven't found any desert roses on my travels yet, might have to head up there and have a look around!

They are actually getting funding to reopen the road to limited access . Can’t wait, some of the best hiking trails are off that road and I’m tired of having to make the long drive around and coming in the other way.

I heard that, and am looking forward to it as well. I've never been to Apache Lake, but if the rest of the road is as scenic as the short area I got to hike down, it'll be an amazing trip! Thanks for the comment!

@@naturallytrailheaded Past the cave up Fish creek a couple miles there is a canyon that cuts in from the east. About a mile up that canyon there is a very extensive cave that we hit when we were in the area. Apache is one of the nicest lakes in the area, very little use as it’s such a pain to get to, but well worth the long drive.

@@naturallytrailheaded There is a lot more of them in the Superstitions than most people realize. Lots of old mines and several indigenous ruins as well. If you’re interested you can contact the Central Arizona Grotto and they can help you out. I’ve been hiking and backpacking the Sups since the 70s and still find new stuff almost every trip. Happy Hiking!
