grieving a dead pet gets easier in time but every now and then you'll look at a spot they used to lay and memories of their funny smile or them running on the grass comes flooding back. how you used to yell their name and they'd wag their tail in excitement. how you'd come home to them waiting eagerly for you, not an empty house. they were a part of the family and they always will be, whether they're here or not. i hope we'll all see our furry friends again.

I had to put my sweet friend (dog) Rascal "Angel Eyes"/ "Doodle" down in April 2021, after 17 years. Grieving times come sudden, hard and unexpected. I really hope there's dogs in heaven because the thought of never seeing him again is difficult to say the least. I'm so sorry for those who are grieving for their animal family members. I lost my Beauty today, my sweet old 12-year-old pup today. She was the sweetest Dog you'd ever meet. I still remember when I was little and my Dad, me, and brothers went to pick her up. She was a rescue dog and was loved dearly by my family and me. I'm only 20, she is my fourth dog to pass, but she is my first dog to pass peacefully from old age. I was lying next to her earlier today, playing this song and crying. She'd lay her head by me to try to comfort me. Man, I hope God takes dogs home to Heaven!

Before he died we talked about it. How there could be no such thing as a substitute or a replacement. But there would be a big house and a heart with a big empty space, and somewhere a dog that needs me. After three weeks, I adopted Sasha at 6 1/2 years old, neglected, flea infested, in "jail" for 6 months. I sought out such a dog, with poor prospects for adoption. She will celebrate her seventh year with me this August. She has grown into a beautiful dog, with the sweetest heart. Don't leave the space empty. Someone needs you as much as you need them.

About 2 weeks ago I lost my best friend, Rocko. He was a big yellow lab that kept me happy for 10.8 years. I miss him with all my heart. He was the best thing that ever happened to me. Two days after his passing I was looking for something on KZbin to make me feel better... Being that it was 3 am I felt bad calling a friend. I ran into this video and i cried like never before. So the next day, after a rain storm, I was looking outside my window and was thinking about him smelling my flowers and exploring around the bushes/yard. Shortly after my thoughts, a big beautiful butterfly shows up on my flower bed.... I felt the one of the most beautiful feelings in my life. I felt as if my soul was being touched. As the butterfly made its way along the flowers it flew gently in-between the bushes. It reminded so much of how my Rocko would do. I knew it was him, his spirit. As the tears rolled down like rain, it made its way through the bushes and then saw the butterfly depart its way to the sky. I didn't want it to leave, I asked God that if that was my Rocko and his sign of peace to please have the butterfly come back and tell me in my eyes the way my buddy would. The butterfly was out of my sight by then, and in that moment, the butterfly made its way back to me. It gently flapped it's wings in front of my eyes and the only thing that separated us was the window. As my heart and soul felt the most immeasurable loving feeling in the world, I stared at it's beauty as I knew this moment would be engraved in my heart forever. You see, Rocko was my friend and my therapy, we did everything together since he was 6 weeks old. We did hikes together, went to family BBQs, he layed next to me in my office as I worked, we went out to lakes, he got me to achieve ultra marathons,, he was someone that got me through difficult times etc. He was someone that didn't need a voice, he was someone that didn't need to tell everyone he made the world a better place, he didn't need to give a reason to show me love, all he needed was to know I and those around him were happy. Rocko, I miss you my Gentle Giant, I know you will forever be in my heart and spirit. Thank you for making my life beautiful.

I lost my 12 year old am staphy that same week. I live in Alberta, so the snow is melting, which means I'm out in the yard this weekend, preping for summer projects, cleaning tools and lighting a fire. Felt a wave of grief and had a bit of a weep today, cause that was our thing together every spring. Crack a beer, light a fire, clean the garage, rake the dead grass, play fetch and, listen to some country music, and enjoy the warm weather after a cold winter. Didn't know it was a tradition till today when I realized it he's not hear to enjoy it with. I still threw his favorite toy around a few times, though. Even set his ashes on the table next to my seat at the fire pit. I'm sorry for your loss, it's definitely not easy even now.

My puppy is going to be 6 this year. His name is bandit. I ha e grown up with dogs, but this is the one who adventured with me trying to figure out life. In my saddest moments I just look at him and find the strength to fight for us. He will be tattooed in my heart for as long as I have conscience. I lost my baby 2 days ago. She passed in her sleep from her illness. I wouldn't sleep much just watching to see if she was ok or still breathing. On March 31st I closed my eyes a bit, and woke up to this feeling in my heart, I looked at her bed next to me and her blanky wasn't moving from her breathing. I got up and saw she was gone. My heart shattered. I cried so much at 3 am, I had to make myself take her to the vet to start cremation. To all of you who have lost a pet, Im so sorry for this heartache. Sorry for your loss, you didn’t fail if you tried everything. I lost my week away from turning 4 Chesapeake to heart failure we didn’t even know he had from birth and was my working / sniffer dog. I spent $5000 on surgery trying to save him and it wasn’t meant to be. We try our best to give them the best lives and sometimes it just isn’t possible. Stay strong! It’s been 8 months for me and I still tear up from time time even with a new working dog.

We just put down my sweet girl this last weekend. She was 14. Had an in house euthansia so she could feel safe and comfortable with her family. Let me tell you I was not ready for it at all. So I was lucky my dog had 18 healthy years his teeth hearing and vision started to go around 17 so I tried bracing myself when he was 15 so I figured ok he's 18 which is like 120 in human years he never got injured no health problems now he's a rat terrier and those dogs have to be the feistiest dogs ever very stubborn want to do what they want to do but he was the best thing that ever happened to me and losing has absolutely destroyed me he died in my lap as we drove around it's how I wanted him to go he loved car rides so I thought it would be perfect if he would lay his head on my lap and just take his last breath the only problem is I cant get over him I'm not married no kids not many friends he was my world he passed away in February I thought it would get easier it hasn't been the case for me I'll never be the same to you whoever reads this if you still have ur baby take all the pix videos you can I realized I didn't take a lot of pix now I regret it I have him cremated in a box I out it in his bed with harness leash blanket and jersey I talk to him everyday I tell him to be a good boy when I leave I kiss him I hold him when Im gonna us creamated together and have our ashes spread somewhere warm all I know is I cannot wait to see him again give ur babies all the kisses car rides and ice cream you can before they go

Im so sorry. My uncle lost his childhood dog (about 35 years ago) and he still miss him so much, he have photos of his dog everywhere. He was so afraid of having a new dog. But someday, an stray female dog appeared at his house. He didnt want her, he did all to scare her away, but nothing worked. It was all in vain: that dog had chosen him. So, he adopted her even if he didnt want to. She gave him hope and happiness. He can't live without her, she is just so precious and kind with him. And now,she appeared with another dog and the three live together and are so happy. I dont know but I wanted to tell you his story with his dogs since its so painful but beautiful that I think it can give you hope and peace. Obviously, new animals can't replace the one we lost, but at least, they can give you all the love you need. I love this song. We lost our dog 3 days ago and have a huge hole in our hearts. We had him right at 15 years. We woke up to him with extremely low blood sugar and he did not recover. He did not have diabetes. He helped raise our 3 kids. He was so fun and I loved him more than any dog I have ever owned. Our other dog is so sad and he whimpers because he just lost his best friend. Shes loyal and will wait as long as it takes, because it's just not heaven for her, if you're not there. My dog is in the last stages of lymphoma, I’m so broken, I look in his big brown eyes and all I can do is cry and tell him how much I love him and how honored that I got to be his human. I’m dreading each day now, I love you my beautiful Casper. I know I will see you again one day, tell my Leo dog and countless others I still miss them too.

Cyndi it’s so hard to go through, but the biggest thing I had to tell myself was that it was selfish and unfair to try and keep him longer than life allowed. It’s a sad situation but try and make it as beautiful as you can for him ❤️ 🐶 and be with him when he has to go... can’t stress that enough. Thanks for commenting

Lost my 2 year old pup Max yesterday. He was attacked by an animal while I was out of town and he passed before I made it home to comfort him or even say bye. I miss him so much and don’t know what to do. Thank you for a safe space to come to while I cry.

I lost my last dog to lymphoma at the ripe old age of 20. I adopted him from a shelter when he was 3-ish. I adopted another about a month after his passing. The pain was still fresh but knowing that so many shelter dogs need homes drove me to do it. I don't regret it but I don't necessarily recommend it. There is no right or wrong to the decision. The heart of a dog lover is a very big place and there is always room for another friend.

My beagle died of testicular cancer/kidney failure last year just after his 16th birthday. My friends have been hounding me (no pun intended) to get another dog, and so I appreciate your perspective. I am looking now, but I wanted time to grieve, to show him that I missed him and wasn't just looking to replace him with a rebound. Many nights, I am lonely; many other nights, I am inconsolable, and I know that would rob a new dog of my time when he needed it most too. I have tried to go by the admonition of John Steinbeck: "The main thing is not to force it. When it's right, it happens. Nothing good gets away" and wait patiently until the right dog for this human comes available.

@@USSResolute I've lost dogs to age and one to a madman, I've lost cats to age and illness, and I had to put a dearly loved cat down when his blindness started making him dangerous to my old ma (he got scared and lashed out). When I lost the lab I had when I was young, my teacher thought I lost my grandfather. None of these have ever felt anything more than heartbreaking. Having said that, with the cats, where we lived across from a farm, people kept dumping them off. We couldn't watch them die in the cold or of hunger, so they would move in. When one passed (some had issues from before we got them), another one (or two) would show up for duty. They knew there was an opening and they just showed up and joined the group. My only advice to you is: You lost a friend. A new friend won't replace the old friend, but they will accept the baton - a changing of the guard if you will. Your old friend would not want you to be alone. And if you show them kindness, they sure to pay you back, whatever the colour of their fur or the what have you. I've never had a nasty cat or dog. My wife and I got a kitten shortly after we met for my step-daughter. She's sleeping her beside me on a bin stack next to the computer desk. She's maybe my 12th cat and I've probably had 7 dogs. Every one is unique. This cat of ours, she's a half dog - I've trained her to give one paw then the other and lie down before meals. And her purrs ... if world peace had a sound, that'd be it. Anyway, don't think your old friend would begrudge you a new friend. Sometimes I've felt like I couldn't take another loss, but necessity put another sad case in front of me and I could not stand away. Sometimes what you need isn't more time, it's just finding some good animal that needs you (and then you discover you need them just as much after a bit). Just something to think about. Sorry for your loss and I hope you can move ahead. Losing my furry friends was as hard as losing my dad and my grandad. Family is those that hang with you through the hard times and show you they care - don't matter if they have two legs or four. We're lucky to share their time and they are lucky to be well loved and cared for even when that care is the hardest thing we can ever have to face.

I strongly recommend adopting an abandoned dog from a shelter, and you don't need to wait. It's not about proper grieving, it's about the fact that I have this big house and this HUGE EMPTY SPACE in my heart, and somewhere there is a dog languishing in a shelter. Sassy June came to me just three weeks after my beloved companion of 15 1/2 years died. She lives with his ghost, now going on seven years, but I try not to keep saying "He would...He did...". Now that we are together, I am sorry for her for every day of the six months she spent in "jail", and I'm glad I didn't waste a single extra day before bringing her home.

The dog in the video looks like my Lily. Just passed a week ago at age 15, there for both kids from kindergarten to graduation, saw me through my divorce, sat next to me on the couch every night and guarded the house like a champ. Will never see another dog like her. I hope she’s chasing butterflies and that we can see her again one day. Lily we love you forever you were such a great dog!
