So was the main reason the canal between Runcorn and Eastham was built because the Mersey was only navigable at high tide? I always wondered why it followed the edge of the river for such a distance. Great video and looking forward to the next part. Cheers!

The ship canal can handle shipping up to 15,000 tonnage. I don't think it'd be possible to send anything past eastham of that size. The sand banks are pretty treturous. Smaller ships can zig zag up the mersey, but a straight line is always faster. Thanks for asking.
