Chasing Tail Challenge (

Dave from ‪@ScottRails‬ started a Chasing Tail Challenge. If you want to participate, use the hashtag #ChasingTailChallenge. He ran 38 passenger cars behind 2 locomotives and the nose of the lead engine nearly touched the rear end of the last passenger car. Here's the link to his video:

There is no way we can come close to this, but we wanted to see just how close we could come. Our layout is a dog bone with a 4'x6' at one end and a 4'x4' at the other end (actually slightly larger) and overall just under 19' long. We could either try on the outer loop which has just over 22" radius but a 2% incline around curves or the inner loop which has a 19" radius. Yes, those are accurate. We custom laid flex track to get the largest radius possible in our space. In the end the outer loop worked best and the max we were able to get around that area without issues was 28 pieces of rolling stock total (10 passenger cars and 18 freight cars) led by an Athearn blue box F7 A-B combo with our other F7 A at the end of the train to help keep things connected.
I'm sure once we fine tune some things we will try this again in the future, but this was a fun challenge. Although we didn't get close to touching front and rear there were some great views of this crazy train.

Thank you! We did our best to make the radius slightly over the standard sizes (22.5" and 19" vs. 22" and 18") since we were using the flex track, and with flex track most of the joints are every 36".

Thank you. We had to use the best combo of locomotives for this challenge. I love our steam locomotives but they would not have worked for this.

This was fun! Back in the day when I was with an HO scale club, we got close or maybe even surpassed prototypical length coal trains once or twice. I'm sure that has happened many times there before and since. I know, I know... I don't have video, so it doesn't count!

I haven't seen too many people follow Dave's challenge, but it was fun to see how close we could get. The limiting factor for us was the combination of inclines and curves, not the pulling power. Anything beyond what we ran started to derail.

Well normally we wouldn't run anything near this long. Our layout is not small, but small enough that a train this length looked ridiculous on it. 😂

This was way longer than everything we have run up to this point. If we didn't have an incline I think we could have gone much longer without derailment, but this was as long as we could go.

@@TwoRailfans yes inclines do cause problems when trying to run long trains. On my last layout I could only pull 32 up the incline.

And our incline goes around multiple curves. 😂

Thanks Jesse. You actually have the perfect layout for this and I think you should give it a try. Add the hashtag to your video. The point is to get the front and back as close as possible. Our layout is a little too big for this to work well.
