Amazing experience! I'll throw in another vote for advancing the use of ADS-B in Canada. In the busy sky of Southern Ontario - Quebec City corridor, it would really improve safety and awareness.
@WingsOverTO7 ай бұрын
Completely agree. It would also just really help English-speaking pilots flying around Quebec, since they wouldn’t really be able to understand other pilots are reporting their position and know where to look. (And French pilots in the rest of the country; too.) Thanks, Glen.

What a fun adventure! Another reason why general aviation is so great!
@WingsOverTO7 ай бұрын
Agreed! We would not have been able to do that in a car. Just too far to drive and we wouldn’t have beaten the eclipse there.
@terrypedersen77 ай бұрын
Totally agree with the need for ADSB everywhere. I couldn’t imagine flying without it now especially in busy US airspace. I just wish Garmin would come to the plate and offer software updates to add diversity to existing units. Hoping they cave in with pressure from US customers wanting to come into Canada. Great experience as we totally missed the eclipse.
@WingsOverTO7 ай бұрын
Yeah I really wonder what Canada is going to do about US planes. Because just the software change wouldn’t be enough - you actually need a second roof mounted antenna as well. So that’s an expense that most US pilots just won’t be willing to take on.
@terrypedersen77 ай бұрын
It might be wishful thinking but I would not be shocked if a Garmin GTX335 or 345 is the same hardware as a 335D or 345D (diversity to allow two antennas) but has different software to allow so. I am certainly hoping this for my future requirements and will be holding off to see how it plays out. Alternatively possibly Garmin will offer a factory upgrade to modify the units if a hardware upgrade is also required. We just need our neighbours to apply some pressure in numbers.

What a lovely video, I really enjoyed it! My wife and I drove from the "other Trenton" (NJ) to Lake Erie and onto Cleveland, where we caught a breathtaking view of the eclipse.

Being in Florida it got a bit gray outside but that's all. I forgot all about it and was sleeping till I had to wake up to get my son from school. Having a baby really messes up your sleeping schedule. At least you got to have some fun!

I also had a PPR for CYSN, but the cloud cover looked terrible so I ended up scrapping the flight and went to Rondeau Provincial Park near London. Glad I did, because I would have been really sad if I had missed seeing totality with my own eyes.

Cool experience... I was chasing clear skies a little further south on the path and saw the eclipse from altitude ... Luckily no ADSB targets for me :-)
@WingsOverTO7 ай бұрын
Thanks, TJ! It really was amazing, and fun to get to watch it with a bunch of other aviation enthusiasts. I even ran into my mechanic there, who'd also flown out from my home airport.

So glad that you got to see it. It was an awesome experience for us here in S Illinois. We had about 90 airplanes parked on the ramp. P.S ADSB in/out was the next best thing after foreflight.
@WingsOverTO7 ай бұрын
That sounds amazing. Did they have events going on around it?

@WingsOverTO Nope. No events other than a few beers in my hanger.😆

Yup! That caught me by surprise as well. We haven't had snow in Toronto for over a month, so I was not expecting to see it just 90 minutes east of here. Thanks for watching!

I did the PPR thing into CYSN, which created a lot of momentum for the day's plans (family there, co-pilot's big birthday) despite knowing it was going to be overcast. But when buddies started texting me sunny skies along Lake Erie shoreline, we raced out to the plane and saw it all happen at 2500' near Long Point... so romantic! Absolutely phenomenal experience and our flight of a lifetime.
@WingsOverTO7 ай бұрын
Oh nice. That was my original plan. Did you find as the pilot you were able to look are the eclipse and really see it?

Yes to ADSB out. Solo night to finish rating saw the guy circling over Seagrave same altitude. Made a call asking intentions and no response so I started to descend and altered course. They turned towards CYOO and made a beeline passing to the right and a bit higher. He made his radio call he's going back and that was it. I was pretty annoyed he didn't even seem to noticed or try and fly further away. Afterwards I thought about it and maybe he only had 1 radio and he was circling to get ATIS. Pretty sure it was a flight school plane though and I thought they all had 2 radios.

Great videos. Im considering a Sierra, how does it handle crosswind landings? I fly out of KDDC and the winds seem to always be 18-25 on average.
@WingsOverTO5 ай бұрын
Thanks very much, I appreciate you reaching out. It's actually pretty good for crosswind landings. It's a heavier plane than a C172 or something like a Piper Archer or Arrow, so it is more stable and resists the crosswinds a bit better. If the winds are routinely 18-25 and mostly crosswind, you'll certainly get good at it! :) I max out at 25kt winds with a 15kt crosswind component - absolute max for me and only if it's a must - but the plane is rated for a 17kt crosswind.
