That was absolutely the right call, no question about it. You’re flying a low power non FIKI piston airplane in icing temperatures and in visible moisture. Many many aircraft have come to an unfortunate end in these circumstances. Always take the safe road, and obey what your training taught you. It’s an automatic decision in this case. You never want to be on the other side of the curve, finding yourself in a rapidly developing overwhelming situation. Good job here !

I got my IR cert in Feb 2023. I am in my mid 40’s and fly a lot with my wife and two girls. Most flight from Iowa to Manitoba but a few to western Canada. Never eastern yet but maybe someday. Lawrence County Airpark (KHTW) is 4 nautical miles away from KHTS along the Ohio River. It's a small private airfield at a lower elevation. The FBO there will probably be better on fuel too. Nice job getting into Huntington with those winds.
@WingsOverTO22 күн бұрын
Thanks! I did think about KHTW, but they didn't have a loaner car, and the fuel there actually seemed more expensive than at KHTS.

lol, at 4:36, I guess the controller just gives up on that difficult phonetic call sign. Would you recommend HTS to clear customs when going south?
@WingsOverTOАй бұрын
lol yeah that was a first for me. We didn’t stop at HTS on the way into the US, so I can’t comment on what clearing customs there is like. But it is a great smallish airport that’s well kept, has a loaner car, and some restaurants not too far away. It’s nice scenery around there too, making for a nice approach. So I’d recommend it just for those reasons.
@WingsOverTOАй бұрын
Actually, I just looked on the CBP web site, and it's not actually a Port of Entry, so you wouldn't be allowed to clear customs there.
@swiftadventurerАй бұрын
weird, Skyvector and FltPlan show KHTS has ADCUS… with phone numbers, 3 hr notice, less than 25 pass. I think the CBP website just shows main offices, and not remote locations at airports. For example, CBP website shows that Ohio only has 5 ports of entry, but the VNC charts show more than that when the CUSTOMS tab is activated. Anyone else confirm?
@WingsOverTOАй бұрын
@@swiftadventurer I've never personally used an ADCUS airport - I thought that system wasn't really used any longer. Have you flown into those airport before?
@WingsOverTOАй бұрын
@@swiftadventurer I look for a Yes or PPR in the Airport of Entry field on Foreflight. Then I go to the US CBP's Ports of Entry page to figure out who to call ahead of time.

I will have to live vicariously through you as they removed my Sierra's engine last week and it's now at the shop to install a new crankshaft. They said it could be 4 months give or take depending on how backed up they are. Last time I flew the plane was in May. It's been in the shop since its annual in August. We are moving from Florida to Kentucky in January so I will have to just come back down and pick it up when I have time. Keep them videos coming!
@WingsOverTOАй бұрын
Oh wow, that's insanely long! When I replaced my engine back in 2021, it was 4 months from identifying the problem (cracked crankcase) to being back in the air again. But 4 months from engine removed is painful. My sympathies!

Hey Jen, yup, one GoPro that sits on the glareshield pointing back at us, and one that's suspended from the ceiling right behind us pointing forward. Hey Terry, that's a great way to describe it, that's what it felt like! After some comments here, I think I'd avoid West Virginia and the western parts of North Carolina unless that's actually my destination. And yeah, I'd highly recommend New Orleans - great airport and of course a great city!
@08turboSSАй бұрын
Shouldnt be flying small plane in those conditions without lots of training and with a pax, not worth the risk. Need to turn the yoke more into the wind and get windward side wing down a little more and hold it at landing and once down, yoke forward to keep nose down. So the left aileron was up somewhat, good, but that yoke was back after mains and nose where down, just push that in half way keep the air from going under nose
@WingsOverTOАй бұрын
I appreciate your input, that's a good reminder to push the nose down after landing in strong gusts. Have fun out there!
