Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena: I truly never thought ld enjoy your Mexico series, after all my only experience with "Mexican foods" has been Nachos (not a patch on the tempting bag/street snacks you ate) or as l said last time, good old Old El Paso meal kits!!! But the interesting, fresh and mouthwatering foods you have filmed has changed my mind completely, and had me salivating with food regret!! The history behind the foods has impressed me. Just a couple of questions if l may ask: The Tuna fruit drink was pink this time not green like the ice cream/sorbet, are there different colours to the fruit or like say a quince does the colour change on preparing? Or was the colour just from the hibiscus. And secondly the fruit drink stall kept the syrups of each flavour in a large receptacle, was this a clay/ pottery pot and is it to keep the fruit/juice/ hochata cool or is it to promote the fermentation process. Im unsure if the hochata component is fermented. I did Google it, its traditionally served from these clay pots but lm not sure the reason for it. And for anyone whose interested this is a dairy free/ lactose free concoction, so you can have this creamy drink without the tummy upset! Just curious and keen to learn more from you who are on the ground!. Great video.👍

Hi Brilliant But Blue, it makes us super excited and happy to hear that! The diversity in the cuisine here really blows us away. We think about the type of Mexican food we have access to in NZ and Australia and it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the cuisine. To answer your questions, we've seen green, pink and orange tuna at the markets and it seems the pink and the green are mostly commonly used for sweets and drinks. I'm not sure about the horchata and why it's stored and served from a clay pot. It's not a fermented drink. Oaxaca has many villages which are famous for pottery- my guess is that's a simply a part of the culture- to use traditional vessels to store foods and prepare foods in? Perhaps a Mexican viewer can shed some light? Thanks for watching this one- so happy you enjoyed it 😍 Cheers, Sheena
@brilliantbutblue5 жыл бұрын
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena: Thankyou soooo much for your reply. Probably the clay pot is a throw back to the Aztecs as its history dates back to ancient times. Now l know that its not a fermented drink and the claypot has no purpose other than its traditional heritage, you KNOW lm going to have a crack at recreating that drink!!! Now to hunt down some prickly pear in Australia and lm onto it. Ive had a go at trying to recreate a few of the dishes you have shown us, as you provide so much detail on the ingredients, texture and flavour lve had some awesome flavour filled dinners!

That is SO awesome to hear Brilliant But Blue 😍 And definitely have a go at the horchata- would love to hear how you get on! 😋

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena: We have pulled off the Chendol (Malaysia series) and the burnt milk ice cream, with a little help from Google as well as the crispy Taco topped with refried beans etc. But the Horchata will be a bit of a challenge to get the ingredients and flavours correct!!☺

Remember when you two were marveling at the drink size at Coney Island? Check out 3:27! 😳 *_Meat Alley_* - I know it's budget friendly but did $180 MXN include the beer, tortilla and accoutrements? Or just the meat? *_Tostilocos_* - Dorilocos in CDMX; Tostilocos in Oaxaca. 😂 You two may like Frito Pie in the U.S. It's a corn chips based, mince and cheese casserole dish but when it's made in the individual bag, it's often called a walking taco. *_Really fun day, guys!_*
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
🤣🤣🤣 you are right Tosh- the supersized drinks exist here too- pulque, atole, Agua de frescas- I’ve seen them all in gigante size 😝 The $180 was for the whole lot- the meat was $75 if I remember correctly. That Frito pie/ walking taco sounds right up my alley- anything with mince and cheese! Thanks for watching and commenting on this one mate. Cheers, Sheena

@Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena $180 for all that makes me happy! 👍 Frito Pie - And before anyone corrects me, it's corn chips topped with ground beef chilli. Wasn't sure if chilli is popular in NZ...kind of overthinking things. Saturdays in the fall/winter are really long and exhausting due to college football morning to night. West coast games are still in full swing. *_Have a great rest of the weekend, guys._*

Chapulines… I know, eating bugs is a scary thing. Think of small dried and salted shrimp tasting like lemon, freshly cut grass from your lawn and a spicy salsa in a taco. Delicious by itself.

So delicious! Great description! Cheers, Sheena

Wow steering wheel tortilla! Looked really good. I would have to think twice about the grass hoppers....hey i am a whimp! Lol love from Texas! Cheers

Haha it was the best way to describe it 😂 really good meal. We love that Fonda. The grasshoppers are really tasty. Just like having chips with a bit of chili, lime and salt on them 🤤😀 Thanks so much for watching this video. Cheers, Thomas 😀

It’s amazing isn’t it. Such a great food city. We do like huitlacoche. We didn’t film it while in Oaxaca though. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Thomas 😀

You had me getting hungry...right up to the point you added crickets to your taco. They can’t be all that delicious of a taco topping my dude.
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
😂 they honestly just taste like crunchy fried stuff- especially when doused in that chilli and lime. Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed the video despite the grasshoppers 😄 Cheers, Sheena

Hi Tema! Lovely to hear from you 😍 so happy you enjoyed this video- it was really fun to film even though it was crazy hectic in meat alley 😆 When we get our merch up and running we’ll definitely make sure there’s a kids size so you can have one 😄 Love you! 😘😘😘

I'm glad you clarified that the extra ingredient in the horchata was prickly pear. I was convinced you were saying tuna and it was making me ill.
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
Hahahah it's confusing that prickly pear is also known as tuna! Hope you enjoyed this one Stephen White, thanks for watching mate. Cheers, Sheena

What is the name of the powdered cheese they sprinkled on?
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
I think it may have been either cotija which is a cow’s milk hard cheese or queso fresco a white cow’s milk fresh cheese 🤔 I’m not 100% sure though Joan sorry! Cheers, Sheena
@MsKestrela5 жыл бұрын
@@ChasingaPlate Probably cotija, as it's a hard, drier cheese. Queso fresco is wetter, and very mild.

Thank you MsKestrela- that makes sense! 😄

I remember when i travel to this specific Market to eat . It was so confusing and intimidating not able to speak the language and Lots of people yelling at you to come to their shop. Anyways a nice lady help me out with everything, which I didn’t finish all the meats. I gave the rest of the meats to a old lady passing by.
