The brand’s way past potential, IMHO. The only thing they’re missing is a performance arm to compete with M, AMG, and RS, and even then would they really need to if they’re able to challenge the tier below?

I took delivery of my GV80 on Saturday. White with the same Blue/Tan interior as in your piece. It’s the 3.5 twin turbo gas Prestige level, which is same as your Luxury specification. Mine is a 2023 certified, so got a little discount vs. 2024, but no difference in equipment. I will note that your 2022 has the previous rotary controller, which has been vastly improved in 2023, a much bigger and taller dial. Your other criticisms are pretty much spot on, but minor, except for the electrical faults, which are a big deal. I buy cars for long term, so I’m optimistic. It replaced a 2011 Audi A5 Convertible (which I kept) with 86k miles, previous to that was a 2004 Cadillac SRX, which was NOT in very good mechanical shape at all when I went to get the Audi in 2011. Had a SAAB 93 Convertible 1999 to 2004 and an Acura Legend 1992 to 2006, which I regret selling to this day. I also have a 1979 Lincoln Mark V Collectors Series with 85k miles on it.

I'm in my third month of owning a 2024 GV80 Prestige 3.5 twin turbo and I must say that this is a very desirable SUV. I purchased for the long term and I feel that the brand will do very well. Amazing levels of luxury and safety at a price far less than the other luxury brands in the segment. I was considering a Range Rover but once I drove the GV80 my mind was made up. Thank you for the long term review.

@@tsals_antics9472 Thank you for your question. I have been a life long lover of Mercedes and owned/drove them for 20 years before the Genesis. Mercedes used to stand for outstanding build quality, great service, making you feel special, amongst other things. Unfortunately the experience I have had over the last five years is that service was poor at best and the company tried to make you feel that it is a privilege for you to be able to drive their car. Mercedes has taken my loyalty and love for granted - only a fool does that. Genesis on the other hand has pulled out all stops to provide an outstanding product, unparalleled pre and post sales service and produced a car with such distinctive looks that I get constantly asked questions about it. To quote “The Castle “ it is the vibe.

Yes...my 2023 GV-80 Prestige is a beautiful, smooth riding and very quiet SUV with a great engine, now with 3,400 miles; however, the drivers seat has a lump that pushes up on a part of the human anatomy that only men have and it is very uncomfortable! The other 'fail' is the touch screen used to control the direction, fan speed and level of heating and cooling. These controls are actually difficult to see and difficult to adjust while car is moving. The GV-80 is a Hyundai product and Genesis should check out and use the push-button controls found in the Hyundai Santa Fe...I know: I rented one for 7 weeks!

The stop-go engine feature needs a stay off capability. I am almost 3 years in on my GV80 and may opt for a new 2025 with the upgrades. Good rounded review; thanks. This had been high on my shopping list until finally ordering a GV70 this week instead (already on the ship)! I do wish the media would stop focussing on Genesis challenging the Germans however. While comparisons are certainly there to be made, Genesis first needs to establish itself in Australia. That means stealing market share from the likes of Lexus, Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar, Alpha Romeo etc. This shouldn’t be too hard. Start playing the options game on something like a Jag F-Pace and you will quickly surpass the drive-away price of a Genesis and end up with a lower powered, 5 seater SUV that still falls short of Genesis features. Then there’s consideration of owning one of these and keeping on the road once out of warranty. With the exception of Lexus, you’d have to have rocks in your head to take that risk with the others, including and especially the Germans. Genesis is neck and neck with Lexus on this front in Canada and the States, where it has been in those markets for around 6 years.

Good objective review but I think Genesis are going to struggle in the market place for many years and will rely heavily on Hyundai giving the necessary $$$ support. The criticisms seem to be valid, particularly the infotainment issues which many purchasers would not find out until after taking delivery. Price and the nameplate is going to be the sticking points for most potential purchasers and if you live anywhere west of Sydney forget about trying to drive or see one. If Genesis are still in Australia in 5 years time and growing, it may be worthwhile taking the plunge but until then, no thanks.

I think you will find most of the people commenting here saying they like it are not prospective buyers. This car will be a failure. Even though this competes with X5/GLE, you will find people who are in this market would rather an X3 or GLC. The fact that Genesis benchmarked the motor from the bmw, the fact that Hyundai/Genesis poached all of their head designers and engineers from BMW/Audi, goes to show the Koreans are basically on par with the Chinese.... Its just a fake Louis Vuitton. This car won't resonate with most prospective buyers. It doesn't have luxury brand value that you get from decades of being market leaders through pioneering and motorsport that the Germans have. Genesis are not leaders, they are followers...
@chasingcars3 жыл бұрын
Maybe. But Lexus have succeeded; Toyota had no real luxury cred before then. And I’m not sure the fake-LV analogy holds; the fraudsters who make fake handbags don’t hire ex-LVMH executives to direct their ops, engineering, design. Competitors hiring executives from rival companies happens in any industry, not just automotive. I’m not in agreement that it means they’ll just slavishly bring their X5 designs to Genesis (for example). It means they’ve had experience in a team that consistently builds successful cars. It’s the institutional experience that matters more than their previous exposure to any one car.
@yuhboyify3 жыл бұрын
@@chasingcars hmmmm. One huge difference with the inception of Lexus when it launched its brand 30 years ago; they utilised Toyota's vast dealership network and were sold side-by-side. Genesis is taking Infiniti Australia's failed approach- separate showrooms, or "studios" as Genesis calls them. Also lexus had more brand value with Toyota vs Hyundai, and the sheer scale of development that went into the LS400 was beyond remarkable. Furthermore, the car market was less crowded 30 years ago when Toyota took a punt with Lexus. The fact Genesis does not want to sell its vehicles in the same showroom as Hyundai like Lexus did with Toyota, speaks volumes how they want to differentiate the brands due to a branding hangover with past Hyundai models being regarded by most as rubbish and this will hurt there exposure massively, not to mention customer support through a lack of a dealer network. Not saying it can't be done though.

Biased, aren’t you? This doesn’t look like a rip off at all….be interested to know which car do you think this has been copied from? Also by that logic, 20 years ago no one would’ve believed Apple will make better phones than Siemens or Nokia or whoever. History belongs to those who challenge….it’s always rewritten. Lexus did the same some 30 years ago. Maybe Genesis will maybe it won’t. Audi’s and BMW’s here in Australia aren’t particularly coming with the reliable quality they were once known for. Just charging customers based on old badge equity! And nothing wrong with hiring LV designers…if what what you launch in the end becomes a Ferragamo. Maybe those designers will now actually do their best work…now that they don’t have to conform to a design approach that’s decades old.
