Once again we begin a new year, throwing off the woes of the past one. Mark and Jack make (in my humble opinion) one of the BEST auto reviewing channels out there. They succulently go into details that others simply gloss over or regurgitate from press releases. The talk to engineers and dig in deep on details. The devil is always in the details. Always look forward to Jack's enthusiasm and balanced approach to Mark's pithy and bordering on bawdy comments. ( Love you Mark NEVER change). As the final thoughts wrapped up, I thought wow, they left out the audio part of it, and here comes Mark to wrap it up it up with a bow. The only other comment is "was that a used napkin next to the seat or one of Mark's snot rags? I know you guys don't do these videos alone, and kudos to everyone in the background. You guys are the superior reviewing channel out there. Wishing you great success in the coming year and looking forward to great content yet to come. Best regards JS

I had the worst experience having a Kia car. This was my first time I chose Kia because I liked the car that I was going to lease. The previous two cars that I drove were Toyota and they never ever gave me problems that usually an older car gives (one Problem on top of another). Imagine you trust the company, you get a brand new car thinking that “hey it’s a new car. I’m not going to have all the problems that old cars give" and then one day you wake up, your car is not starting, the next day brake lights don’t work, the following week another problem comes up.

I dont think many know that the designer of the Genesis models, Sangyup Lee, was the designer for Bentley. He designed vehicles under the Volkswagen group such as GM's Camaro and Corvette among others. He was head of exterior design for Bentley, and designed the Bentayga, Flying Spur, Continental GT etc. before moving to Genesis, which is why it's no joke when they say it's a Bentley on a budget.

I think one of the biggest highlights Geese missed was the fact that both the 2.5T and the 3.5TT are both dual injection engines...meaning they both have port and direct injection which should be a better setup in the long run compared to competitors like the X5 (direct injection only, also the new MDX 3.0 turbo 6) with reliability. Hyundai and Kia have said that’s the biggest reason they upgraded from the 3.3TT used in the stinger and g70

Ride quality is gloriously magnificent, does not lose to any other luxury brands in this category, feels as if I am riding through clouds instead of hard asphalt road. Inside cabin is simple and yet refined and elegant - I much prefer this over some other makers' cluttered panels. Lastly, I notice many people doing double takes of this car. I am mightily pleased with the design - those on the design team (interior as well as exterior), along with the chassis and drivetrain team definitely nailed this one. What I would point to in any discussion about the GV80 and a comparably equipped BMW X5 is the stellar reliability of Hyundai / Genesis, their ten year warranty, and the absolute *hosing* you will get every time you need to have virtually *anything* done on your BMW. (I'm surprised BMW hasn't started charging for putting air in the tires) Cost of ownership is a huge differential, and coupled with the fact that BMW has not been known for their bullet proof reliability of late, I think that there is a compelling argument to be made for the $10,000 cheaper Genesis. Especially when you take into consideration the fact that the value of both vehicles will plummet like rocks tossed from an airplane the minute you drive them off the lot.

Isn’t maintenance covered on New BMWs for 3-4 years. This essentially covers most leases. Doesn’t matter that there is $10,000 delta in msrp when you go to lease and monthly payment is the same due to BMWs superior residuals. This is how most people shop for their X5s. @@AustinF516 I know this post was a month ago, but if you're interested in at least tinkering in the options that MAY come to North America, you can configure the 2021 GV70 on the Hyundai korean website IN ENGLISH and see - potentially - what the NA GV70 Sport 3.5T would look like with your preferences. I fell in love with so many things about the Genesis GV70 and it's not landing until late summer. Using a currency configurator, my GV70 came in over $60k but that's competing with my potential X3 M40i build and so it is less of a heartbreak. The difference will undoubtedly be the future leasing incentives, which BMW will always eclipse competitors. Aside from the G70, these Genesis cars lease terribly. I am considering purchasing the GV70 instead because I do believe in the value, overall reliability (plus better warranty) and then if needed to sell off at Year 3, it would not be an astronomical loss.

I agree with the reviewers, it’s a fantastic suv for $50-60k, but the subpar dealership and ownership experience, not to mention the lack of heritage and brand awareness, prohibits it from selling at the $70k price point no matter the features and options. Genesis has to crawl before it can walk.

14:26 Just point out to the car shopper that, in 5 years the Genesis wont hit you with a $5000.00 bill for something that shouldn't break in the first place. Everyday after you purchase a BMW it gets more expensive. Not so in a Genesis. Note to the rich: Just because you *can* afford some high repair bill, doesn't mean you *want* to.

Color me skeptical. We've had 2012, 2014, and 2016 Hyundais or Kias in various parts of our family. Each model was touted as when "Hyundai/Kia has definitely put their reliability problems behind them", and yet all 3 have averaged 3 unscheduled service visits (i.e. something is broken) a year since new, which is more than any of our Toyotas or Mazdas (or even, God help me, the one Ford) have had in *5* years, despite all being maintained per manufacturer guidance. And that despite said scheduled service being notably more expensive (because it's more frequent) than the Japanese brands. Maybe 2020 was the year Hyundai/Kia ACTUALLY turned the corner on reliability, but at this point I'm going to need to see 5 solid years of data via Consumer Reports or a similar service before they get another chance.

I think you’re remembering the story correctly. When the Lexus LS dropped in the 90s, people were literally throwing their Mercedes and BMWs away just to get one. It was such a huge shift, that Lexus didn’t have to wait so long to become a true competitor. Genesis is way behind on that front, selling only 6,000 G80s in 2021 which was their best selling year. They have a really long way to go and are not making too many waves, other than in the styling, which is from the Germans.

I'm no engineer, but I don't feel that the use of stamped steel on many of the GV80's suspension parts is due strictly to cost cutting. With more of an off-road mission, I think they were going for more strength and durability, much in the same way that Toyota has stuck with their steel understructure on the Land Cruiser. If I were buying something like this and planned on keeping it for at least ten years, I think I'd prefer the steel.

Genesis is trying and it shows, it will take time to break that loyalty people have with Mercedes and the Germans if they ever do. This might not be enough. It just has to be more and different. Unfortunately, the driving experience is usually the last thing on people's minds at that price, people focus on all the features and comforts. That's another reason why cars today don't focus on a sporty feel, it is the comfort that sells. That and EPA.

I think the real elephant in the room is reliability compared to the competition. This will undoubtedly be less expensive and easier to maintain than BMW and Audi products because it isn’t overengineered to the point of being prohibitively complex. Add in the exceptionally superior warranty Genesis offers over every other luxury brand in the industry, and it’s a no brainer if you are buying this for long term or concerned about resale where German vehicles literally tank in value because IF they haven’t been maintained (most are not) they will need, who knows, $5,000? 10,000? in service to keep them running. And hey, I’m not defending Korean car resale value, it’s terrible too, but the buy-in is substantially lower. You won’t pay anywhere near sticker on a Genesis product.

The ability of those things to corner, even the best of them are, for the best, mid-tier. So investing ressources in trying to make this thing nimblier doesn't make much sense. If you want a nimble car with sporty attributes, go for sedans and coupes. Even mid-powered ones are much more enjoyable on small roads than any top $$$ SUV.
