Why people love it 1. Affordable from a Japanese brand 2. Has everything you need without going over the top and increasing cost 3. Reliable and simple build 4. Not cutting edge but feels modern and stylish enough for many 5. No direct competitors (Price + Trust) Car companies for some reason think all car models need to try and be premium and pack in a heap of features a large % of people don't really want or need the extra expense of. The way car prices are going, some more simplified models would definately be welcomed by many who want a newer car without the price tag of all the tech they probably wont use anyway

Quality Japanese brand. Cheap servicing cost. 10 year warranty for peace of mind. Older, but proven reliable design. It's not hard to see why they are so popular. No point owning a car that has the best ride quality or the highest power if it is known to have reliability issues, and or expensive service requirements. A lot to be said for simple reliable Japanese cars.

Car Reviewers only review cars based on driving it for 5 days and dont have to live with the consequences after. People want to know when they make an investment on a vehicle it lasts long enough to finish pay off for it and the vehicle still works good after that to see a return on investment. The asx is in many markets , so engine parts, suspension parts after 10 years will be easy to find.

It’s the reliability, stupid. People actually like buying a car that never has a problem and does what it is intended for. I couldn’t care less about what the buttons on the inside look like. Had a Lancer that lasted 17 years without one issue and the ASX is just as good.

Why only 17 years? I bought my 2008 MY09 Lancer back in 2011 and I absolutely love it. Has the 4B12 2.4L engine that's found in the ASX. I'm hoping to get at least 400,000 km out of the engine and honestly I would buy one again because the Sportback is incredibly practical, probably has even more space than most SUVs these days.

@@Spacemonkeymojo I just traded in my 2017 Lancer with the 2.4 AWC too...I drove it from brand new to 225,000km... with just regular maintenance...I now have a 2024 RVR(ASX) with the same 2.4 engine...I plan to drive it for 10 years. Mitsubishi make some really good vehicles...I prefer the RVR because it's simple and has everything I need and living in Canada i love the 4WD capability. Also the best warranty you can get.

My experience with a Mitsubishi Montero/Pajero LTD (the full size, not sport) used here in the states was exceptional. It lasted 274,000 miles (441 Km) before any major issues. Incredibly bullet proof, easy to work on, amazing off pavement performance. If they still made them I’d buy another one today.

Ive got a 2020 mitsubishi asx exceed 2 litre here in the UK 🇬🇧 ......absolutely love it ...ok the ride is a bit agricultural at times but my attitude is if it aint broke dont fix it....reliable..good on fuel and the back up here is still good ...

Great value for money from a well established car manufacturer, that is why. As long as it is practical and functional then it is ok, any bells and whistles are unnecessary, just adds to complexity and reliability. Cheers

It has the reliability track record of a Toyota with the warranty of a Hyundai. Excellent peace of mind. My parents both drive Outlander Sports here in the USA. A 2015 with the 2.4 and a 2019 with the 2.0. I've driven them both. The 2.0 feels plenty adequate around town. I haven't driven it on highways. The only aspect I truly dislike about this vehicle is the steering feel. It feels numb and devoid of road feel. However, it handles very well. It takes curves confidently. Ride quality can feel choppy at times but it's completely not a deal breaker. I've certainly driven choppier riding vehicles over the years.

I get why they are popular. That 10-year-warranty has a lot to do with it but there is also the fact that if you want a new SUV with the same level of tech the only brands that are on-par price-wise are MG and Haval and a lot of people get nervous about those Chinese brands.

Here in the USA I drive mostly back roads of hilly terrain and these are awesome at that and being normally aspirated port injected vehicles that take regular gas makes them ultra reliable... Easy to toss around and a great turning radius too. Easy to service and more reliable than my other cars... A winner.

I shopped around and the ASX LS seemed to be great value. I ordered one in April and it was meant to arrive in late November but it’s now arriving at the end of September so it had a shorter wait time than the RAV 4 which was out of my budget. I know it doesn’t have some of the latest features but considering my last car was quite old I’m not used to a power tailgate or a wireless recharger so it’s not going to be a downgrade for me, the whole car is a huge upgrade. I wanted to mention there was a $7k price difference between 2 different Mitsubishi dealerships in the same city for the identical model and colour.

My wife and I have had 11 over the years and the only one to give me any trouble is our ralliart. Spent a shed load on the gearbox and now it sweet. Great car to pedal along.

Just wondering how you were quoted a $7K price difference between the 2 Mitsubishi dealerships you approached? That shouldn't happen! The Mitsubishi website gives you the current price on their Build And Price feature on their website and this is what both Mitsubishi dealerships I use for car services have quoted me if I go ahead and purchase a white Mitsubishi ASX SUV LS model, to be built in June 2023 and delivered to me in Brisbane Australia in July 2023. The price quoted on the Build And Price feature on the Mitsubishi website says the price will be $31990.

All the alternatives mentioned feel smaller on the inside. I tried them before buying my ASX. The price to features ratio works and I'd rather have something reliable than fancy and I can't tell what reviewers mean by dynamics despite having many a rental car foe work. Also I absolutley hated lane centering.

The problem is that a person doesn't become a motoring journalist because they are enthusiastic about family A to B cars. All they care about is sports cars, fancy features and cutting edge tech gadgets. Therefore they are very biased towards Value for Money cars which lack unnecessary features.

Funny you say that. We bought an ASX years ago after having one as a hire car for a week, we liked it. Then about 2 yrs later, we decided we wanted something different as the car felt small for the family. We went to a Seltos and haven't looked back. Granted it is far more expensive (we had top of the range ASX and my wife only wanted top of the range for the new car) and the Seltos feels larger inside. Doesn't mean the ASX is bad though.

Yes, these reviewers would drive lexus and bmw's so ofcourse they dont quite like the driving dynamics of a car half the price. A japanese reliable brabd,sturdy body quality unlike the kia's and hyundai was good enough for me of family of 4 to go for ASX LS.

I have a MR and it has Adaptive Cruise Control. It does not have a Turbo so you won’t have to pay for that to be fixed or serviced and the CVT won’t wear like a Dual Clutch DCT will. So less stuff to fix or worry about!

simple answer: reliability , yes it doesn't have the most gadgets, features, and tech on the cars, I know the interior is outdated, but some people just don't really care on those things, they want cars that run and works and wont have problems every 3 months or so.

We purchased the Exceed in this colour. Value for money and reliability / warranty was major considerations. I think Aussies take these features over most things. Yes it wasn't designed for a race track but it is good enough for Australia. Unlike others, we have had many Mitsubishis over the years and all reliable - probably because we looked after them. As far as comparing others, I don't know if the reviewer has sat in a CHR for example. I did and I just banged my head to get in and out of the rear seat. I think if Mitsubishi kept selling this car for another 10 years it would sell, all the tech inside isn't that important unless you are a terrible driver. I noticed the CHR top of the line petrol model is about $5,500 dearer than the top of the line Exceed which is an extra $21 per week over 5 years (people keep their cars on average for 5 years). The fuel savings will not even cover the extra price and as a bonus you don't get to bang your head...To summarise I looked at all the SUV's out there and the Exceed and ASX was the best value for money car around. Other Aussies agree obviously. Made in Japan is a clue too. I wanted to add one point. The 2 litre motor is more than OK as it is the same as the Lancer we owned for 8 years and it had enough power. I criticised some family recently for knocking a ASX rental car for lack of power. I informed them they add the pathetic ethanol petrol (and yes the family used that as well in the top ups) so I told them that petrol costs you more than you save. Only use the premium fuels and I'm certain you'll get better economy and power. I proved how useless this petrol was years ago when I tried it in my Valiant Charger. The car took ages to start which means the fuel doesn't fire as well plus I also tried it in a Mitsubishi 380 I owned a few years ago. I couldn't believe the power drop, hence I will never use that type of petrol ever again. There is my tip of the day for drivers, don't use ethanol as you'll getter better economy and more power. I suspect the savings in not having your fuel injectors clog up will be just one of the bonuses.

love my asx mr bought new December 2022 prior to that bought band new lancer had it for 10 years always serviced and I use 98 petrol all the time has ample power both of them not sure why ppl say no power , yes its not like my partner amg 3litre turbo suv but you should see how much petrol it uses its just not a every day car to go to and fro love my asx , asx all the way

@@mattybonjovi It is a simple answer to the no power thing. Lots of people try out the car as a rental. Family members proved what I am about to say. The cheapest petrol with ethanol is put into rental cars, and having that petrol is like halving it's power. I will never ever use ethanol petrol again due to the power drop is massive and any savings at the pump is lost by the extra fuel consumption because you have to push the pedal more to get the same speed.

Mitsubishi top selling car in New Zealand in 2022outselling Toyota. Buyers like what they are doing with great reliability and the styling. What they don't like is is being fostered off with new technology that does not live up to theory ie VW and Ford transmissions that fail and in some cases refuse to repair under warranty and not forgetting dieselgate. No wonder Mitsubishi prospered.

I looked at all the other models out there in NZ, and decided on the Mitsubishi, asx, 2.4 vrx model, it suited my budget plus some other models didn't have the features I was after, unless you go a higher trim with a higher price, our CX 30, starts at 40+ grand, and Kia Seltos, didn't have a couple of features I wanted, unless it broke my budget, some cars are a lot smaller than it looks on paper and some were too expensive for my budget. so Im not a racing car driver, so this car is practical for my needs.

My wife young mum with two little kids, dog and very average driving skills :) asx is just perfect everyday car to trash with 7 years warranty. Looks ok, drives ok. Nothing exciting but it works and reliable.

I have a 2020 GSR one of the biggest annoyances is the brittle paint that attracts scratches and chips like crazy and they are not easily repairable. Ive had many cars but no issues. My dad has same colour in 2018 ES and no issue. Overall car great zippy and does the job and looks good. I like the LED lighting and LED reverse lights are a standout. I upgraded all interiors to LED and No Plates too looks so cool. Also one of the best wipers ive ever had. Rear seats are bit cramped. Upholstery is great beautiful seats and hard wearing. Good review.

Been driving a 10+ y.o. ASX, 1.6 petrol, it is a low millage car, but still quite impressive built quality, and of course 0 issues (my uncle was 1st owner, so I know the maintenance history). There might be others who also appreciate the simplicity inside, when it comes to controls, for me less is more. Here in Europe I wouldn't consider it "small" SUV, despite being 195cm and well over 100kg, I have no problem fitting grown people in the back too. I do agree car feels underpowered, although the journalist was referring to 2.0 engine. I also drive KIA Soul from the same period with same 1.6 petrol engine, and it is much more lively but at the expense of higher consumption, Kia-10l/city vs ASX 7.5l. ASX feels much more convincing in built quality, but it did cost 50% more back in a day 20k EUR vs 13k. Now those numbers seem unattainable.

@@igorfrancetic4669 started guzzling oil and losing power suddenly. Get your engine checked before warranty runs out. If there are any problems, they will give you a new engine for FREE, take advantage of it so you don't lose out! If you have to get a new engine, the warranty starts over on it.

Bought my kid a new Lancer in 2018 ( run out 2017 model ). She hasn't hicupped ever, and still now in 2024. Absolutely stress free. However I've done the Ford PowerShift and now the Ecoboom. I'm looking at an ASX simply for the 10 warranty and reliability of a JDM. Those who have been through car dramas just want that peace of mind over all the fancy stuff.

It’s so funny to me when I hear reviewers say how “unfortunate” it is when things are manual and not digital or motorised. A manual lever for a seat won’t be as expensive to replace as motor parts, likewise a digital screen will cost waaaay more to replace if something goes wrong with it. So nice to see a car that still has these features and if you’re like me and hate that everything is just a giant iPhone in a car then I can imagine you probably love the tactile experience of a car with actual buttons and manual parts mixed in with a good amount of modern features but not overdone.

True that. Old school is better. More electronics just means more crap that is prone to fail and then costly to fix. Also crap like blindspot monitoring, adaptive cruise, lane keep assist are for people who can't drive. How lazy can someone be if they can't be bothered turning their damn head to check their blindspot? All these features are idiotic and newer cars suck because of them. The best cars came out from 2007-2018, ever since then everything has been going downhill with all these crappy large screens in cars and over the top safety features which make people worse drivers overall because it lets them take their attention away from driving. SUVs are also utter crap, Mitsubishi need to bring back the Lancer.

Nice review. Re some alternatives, The CHR seems claustrophobic to me, especially in the back, and I am not partial to direct injection Korean vehicles and dual clutch transmissions. I also find ASX steering excellent but have not driven the competitors.

Good warranty, decent reliability and not bank breakingly expensive for what you get... but I'd say the big thing is it looks the part from the exterior. I think in GSR trim it's actually a really cool looking little SUV to run around town with for the price. If you were looking at some other options with extended wait times and the ASX was there, in stock and ready to go it'd probably be enough to sway you.

I'd also choose this over the Skoda, that Ford Puma(I don't want a Fix-Or-Repair-Daily vehicle lol) or the cramped CH-R. People love this simply because it gives you more value and versatility many would simply want and look for in a subcompact crossover which is proven and tested to be reliable and dependable that can easy screw your more "modern and advanced" picks. I'd get the 4B11 unit instead tho since it tends to be a bit more economical and can still git more or less 15km/L.

Inside is smaller than I thought. Simple, nothing fancy nothing exciting. Outlook is good smart. Something in details makes difference that better than the other choices in the same period. Love it. e. g. A look- hidden exhaust host. Not easy to see it, looks modern, nothing easy get into it. High Contrast left right signal (orange colour frashing lights with black colour bases), i thought can be seen more easier & far.

Spot on analysis, Tom. The driving dynamics, outdated interior, the cvt transmission are a major let down. The reason for its popularity is the price tag, 10 warranty and in this day and age with increasing interest rates few new car buyers have a budget exceeding $50,000 for a new car and believe me, people do shop around to get a better value for their. Mitsubishi not on my list of preferred cars any more as I find the cvt transmission and road noise a deal breaker when it comes to road handling.

I have driven many new cars (rentals) and most were as noisy if not noisier on country roads than the ASX. My rating from most noisy to least: Subaru Forester, Toyota Rav4, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai i30, Mitsubishi ASX, Toyota Camry. The Subaru was the worst by far, apart from that, they all felt noisy.

Wife and I test drove an asx 2022 modal as a family car. We both agree that it was way too small for what we wanted and found the interior in our opinion to be very basic compared to a 2020 Subaru Xv base modal that we also test drove the same day. We ended up getting a Subaru XV-L 2022 modal for the same price as the used 2020 XV modal. Always good to test drive a car and estimate where you passenger seat will sit for rear facing baby seats if your plan is to start a family.

Had a loan of ASX for a 3 hours drive and toward the end of the drive my partner was car sick and she was sitting the front passenger seat. I have never encountered such a choppy suspension in my entire driving life and I have been driving since 1971. I comprehend why reviewers criticise this SUV as they are blessed with crappy dynamics. They need someone to apply RTS to them: like Holden did in the late 70s... LOL

The lancer towards the end of its life only had the 4B11 not the 4B12, the previous Outlander used the 4B12 that is In The ASX GSR. You also have to keep in mind that when the ASX was released they were only pitching it as a “value” vehicle. Now with newer models of Mitsubishi they are getting more premium. And to be honest not much goes wrong with these, ABS pumps are about the only major issue and that isn’t till later in their life.

The servicing cost for the ASX is a rip-off for the 10years under warranty. It's more than 30% over it's competitors. Potential ASX buyers will be advised to check the eye watering servicing cost .

When I began driving, you had to pay extra for such things as a radio, air-conditioning etc. Cars were too basic. Now, you have to pay for stuff you don't want and cars have complicated additions that are useless to many people. I just want to drive my car. I want a nice ride with decent steering and brakes. I still like manual gearboxes, even though car makers want to push me towards an auto. It's not complicated.

We only ever road test vehicles at the placard recommended tyre pressure - the pressures were 100% correct in this video. The issue is not overinflated tyres.

i dont know man, mitsu mirage CVT is not the first matic i drove, but it was what convinced me to never buy manual again. now i drove crv, and i still like driving the mirage more. idk. maybe i just sucked.

I had a 2011 model with 1.8 turbo diesel and 6 speed was very happy with fuel consumption but the ride over long distance was ordinary. Now own a Hyundai Tucson 1.6 turbo petrol the fuel consumption not as good as ASX but leaves the ASX for dead in comfort.

Thank you for the report - I expect the next ASX will be a rebadged Nissan Qashqai and possibly running the I’ll-fated Nissan CVT from JATCO - I would rather a good second hand Subaru XV for it’s better road dynamics, safety and constant AWD or a Toyota - I don’t like the harsh and noisy ride of the Mazdas or the vague off-centre steering of Hyundai or Kia - not many good choices in this segment and VW/Audi/Skoda use the dodgy dual-clutch auto.

@@daweigo6851 Subaru quoting me $7k to fix the issue. Bastards. It's also a known fault with Subaru, lots of info if you search. You're going to laugh, but I traded it in for a Qashqai and never looked back, no issues with my CVT after 7 years daily driving. I really don't care what is parroted by others about Nissan, my QQ and 350z are the most reliable cars I have ever owned.

Had one of these as a rental. Boggiest issues were the shocking lack of grip from the cheap tyres and sub par air conditioning. Took forever to cool the car. Otherwise OKish CVT and engine was standard Mitsi.

I have a 2015 Mitsubishi ASX GSR. I started having problems with the locks after the first year. And the glove compartment started going in the first 6 months. after 7 years, one of the locks has stopped working despite the mechanics checking it ever year. I won't be buying another mitsubishi. I heard from a mechanic that their quality control isn't very good.

Carsales gave this car 6/10 12 years ago. Wheels also have a luke warm assessment. It wasn’t good when it was released and hasn’t gotten any better. Even people who don’t like cars at least deserve a good drive. So it’s a shame people continue to buy it. Having said that I have enjoyed renting an ASX on a few occasions just for the experience! It’s the motoring equivalent to watching a B grade film. It’s so bad it’s kinda fun.

For the basic car buyer they want the reliability, affordable price decent look and a great warranty. Mitsubishi fills majority of these. What we don't want is costly maintenance issue. We have all heard of costly issues with Ford. Mondeo ,focus and Fiestas and Volkswagon VAG transmission problems and there reluctance to fix them and also deiselgate . Why would we choose any of those

I replaced a 2013 Outlander with a 2020 ASX precisely because I knew it was the same engine and transmission that was proven well beyond reliable. The GS with the manual transmission and steel wheels has excellent fuel economy and none of the harsh ride mentioned. Why on earth does that model have flappy paddles when the CVT has no gears? What an absolute joke

Yeh I know it's old it's outdated, the interior tech is ordinary at best but a tried and proven formula the old 4B12. 2.4 like grandpa's axe the big compacity 4cyl fuel usage is on par with the Chinese low compacity 4xyl turbo

I hired one in April 2022. It drove terribly, was gutless and noisy and crapped itself and had to be towed home. What a shitbox. What has it being on sale for 12 years got to do with it being dependable? The original Range Rover was on sale for nearly 20 years.
