There isn't more than meets the eye with the Mitsubishi ASX. This thing has been around for a long time.
The venerable small SUV from the Mitsubishi brand has been a stalwart of the range for more than a decade. In fact, it's almost 13 years since this generation model launched.
And while it has been kept fresh with a new look a couple of times over in its life-cycle, it is feeling its age in a few key ways. I'll tell you all about them in this detailed review of the 2023 Mitsubishi ASX.
So, should you consider this small SUV if you're looking at other crossover models like the Chery Omoda 5, GWM Haval Jolion, MG ZST or Hyundai Venue?
Yep. Maybe you should. But it's really going to depend on whether you thinking the drive experience matters or not...!

Thank you for the review! With the ASX's known reliability and parts availability, I reckon we'll be seeing these on the roads for decades to come. And I for one eagerly await the future of young people running modified, slammed ASXs, like we currently see with the original Forester. It's _basically_ a Lancer after all.

Haha true. And if you want the ASX but want the Euro exterior look, they sold the Peugeot 4008 and Citroen C4 Aircross here for a while, which used the same underpinnings but had (arguably) better looks.

Also thank you for showing the cargo area so closely! I did consider the ASX when shopping for my first car not long ago. I reckon I could totally fit my partner's wheelchair in there, so I'd say the ASX is still on the menu if I find myself in the market again.

Thanks for doing the review, I recently bought an LS and get it in December/January '24. Tested a lot of SUVs in the quest to find a decent one in the sea of competition. Tested MGs, Konas, Kias and then the ASX LS. I found it to be as you have said, not too fancy but I thought it was the best value overall. It has enough tech and safety features for me and what sold it was the reliability history, 10 year warranty and the price. Fuel consumption, power, back seat features aren't important for my needs so it's a good fit.

@@shanegeneral3874 The LS seems to be the sweet spot in the range. Hope that it is going well. It is interesting when the reviewer says he wouldn't choose the ASX for himself. Honestly for the price point, in my opinion it is one of the best SUVs out there, for its size, if one wants to hold onto their SUV for a long time. In regards to its interior, I love that the fact that the controls are very basic, with no need to be searching through a screen for essential controls. The Chinese SUVs do provide a lot more glitter, but for me I rather go with the ASX if I was looking at this price point. Cheers.

Family members have a 2013 ASX 2L with CVT auto but on 16" alloys (215/65/16) and has zero "active" safety features but does have reverse cam/rear sensors (which come in handy), infotainment is limited to Bluetooth streaming, single slot CD, AM & FM but at least the media device is touch screen with a volume nob (which also can switch off/on the device), also the steering wheel has media controls (on the left side which is dumb ) while cruise control is on the right side (again stupid). The engine has got some good mid range BUT only once the CVT for what of a better word "spools" up, I have always though of it as CVT lag in that the CVT is caught out at the driver wanting more acceleration, the engine has the needed torque / power (it's actually a very good 2L 4cyl which also runs no issues on 91 RON) but the CVT is "yawning", there is a way around it and that is to "force" the CVT to use its step ratios by going into manual mode and drive it like a clutch less manual (which is a thing ask Mercedes about it lol) and its actually FUN, yes I said its FUN, hey take one for a drive and you will get the idea. Shame about the steering though, I have driven old cars which were non-power assisted that had better feel and accuracy, if you love zero feedback and light actually super light steering fine however out on the highways its hot garbage (context: my own vehicle has sports suspension and very well weight steering so driving the ASX is yeesh bad for me) . II give credit to Mitsubishi in terms of interior packaging, for a small car outside its very big inside, consider this for a moment, the ASX has been around i its current form since 2010, however Mitsubishi probably did the development work from 2005, that is now 18 years old platform but they got it right th first time for this class size. Another positive? It's built in Japan and is priced very well and discounts can be had if you drive a hard deal. Recommend? Yes. while it does not have the "bells and whistles" that Haval or MG have they don't have the durability factor the ASX also long term reliability + parts and service are there and very little has gone wrong with these vehicles since launch, same can't be said of the China brigade. Thanks for reading.

Here in the U.S. it's called an Outlander Sport. I picked up a 2019 GT with the 2.4 liter engine and it runs just fine. The CVT is louder than a conventional transmission, but I always have music playing so it doesn't bother me. I just recently changed the transmission fluid at 60,000 miles as I didn't know if it was ever changed. I used Amsoil CVT fluid and changed both filters and it runs smoother and quieter than before. Had it checked at the dealership for its scheduled maintenance and all is well with no issues. Here in the U.S. Mitsubishis are not very popular, but I'm happy with mine. Not a lot of accessories available here either.

No you can't kill it, because mine is the 2011 1800cc turbo 6 speed gearbox clear tech manual version and it has over 200,000 Kms and drives like new. From experience the only thing to look out for is if you have a tail light out it's usually a small glove box light blown. So, don't go buying a new tail light, because you'll have the same problem as before. Check number plate lights, glove box light a the small position light at the bottom of the front of the car before you spend lots of money at the garage (mechanic).

I would say the steering is downright dangerous even at 110km/h, way to light and the amount of steering input corrections needed to keep the vehicle within the lanes gets old real fast. Not sure if this is a positive or negative but the speedometer also over-reports the vehicle true road speed by at least 6km/h re: at 110km/h speedometer the road speed according to a very accurate GPS receiver is 104km/h, on the plus side you will never be hit wit a speeding fine on the negative side that is dangerous for highway driving and will upset other drivers on the road if you hog the right lane.

I think the biggest selling point of the ASX is its reliability. There is an aftermarket warranty company in the UK that publishes all of its data on repairs that any given car has, and the ASX is ranked the 3rd most reliable car on the road in the UK, with only the Honda Jazz and Lexus RX beating it in terms of reliability. And I think the reason why is because everything on the ASX is tried and true; there is no cutting-edge technology that is prone to failure because it is not long-term tested. I think this is also the reason that they are quite cheap to buy.

Rumours are the ASX as is will continue here for 12-24 months, Renault is a dirty word in Aus and Mitsubishi dont think the Captur would sell rebadged and the Xforce which is their new small SUV for overseas buyers wont make the emission controls code in Aus plus has some safety issues and would cost too much to make it suitable for Australia.

Matt the juxtaposition at 10:21 is what speaks to this pragmatic review. There's utility in being a purist but usefulness also ascribes to folk and their want to drive something that does the basics of what a car should do vis-à-vis 10:21. Anecdotally, there is a growing realisation amongst automotive consumers at the point of sale that newer technology can mean more coin-pain post sale. In other words as the salesperson is expounding the virtues of blind side monitoring and the 360 camera view the consumer is privately realising something else: namely that the driver/passenger side mirrors are not merely mirrors anymore; these are two pieces of technology. Obviously there is active safety (abs) and there is passive safety (airbag) but there is a big difference between, say for example, abs and blind side monitoring technology. I don't think majority of consumers use cost of parts and replacement as a filter at car purchase time. On a similar note, I don't think consumers use resale value as factor in their choice for the particular vehicle in front of them. I've found all your reviews useful and helpful but I have thoroughly enjoyed this particular one because you have taken a vehicle born in 2010, had very little done to it and said 'this could be for you!' Long live minimalism!!!

needs always over wants. Do I want artificial leather seats? no, do i need 4x4 driveline? yes, do i want a turbo petrol 4cyl? Hell yes but sadly the car markers make it very hard to actually "want" there cars as they get the packing wrong time and time again. In other words I'm looking at an X-Trail which has 4x4 which is what I want, but has artificial leather seats which I don't need and sadly has a 2.5L NA 4cyl where I want a turbo petrol (don't care that its CVT or torque converter), the alternative Outlander in AWD offering comes with 7 seat option which I don't need but does have the seats the I want (Micro suede with partial synthetic leather bolsters), nothing else in the segment gets its right save for Mazda which i don't care for. if i could build a Frankenstein it would be: _ Turbo petrol 2l 4cyl / 8-speed torque converter AWD from the Ford Escape - Nissan X-trail interior (in 5-seat TI spec) - Mitsubishi Outlander seats with suede / artificial leather bolster & exterior body and fit it with a large 80L fuel tank. Shame that no one comes close to matching "needs" I guess the closet is Nissan save for the engine/trans and seats. As for how much 'tech" you use for basic stuff, that depends, I have had several "phantom" AEB panic stops which at first scared the crap out of me, its a shame I can't easily switch off AEB via a button as I can the stupid auto-start stop but again it all comes down to at the moment circumstance, I was driving a fleet special Rav4 Hybrid for the last 5 weeks and used Radar Cruise Control even in metro regions just to test it out, worked fine when there was a car in front but when the sensor could not locate a car in front it would not stop for traffic lights, that said Toyota warns you that you have to be aware of your surrounding, so again depends on moment circumstance. Matt is one of most neutral bias reviewers there is.

I just bought a ASX 2010 Aspire version for AUD 8500. Has 185k kms but it's in excellent condition. Honestly except for the screen everything inside looks the same as the 2023 version. Kind of disappointing to see misubishi didn't upgrade the inside of the car after 13 years !

Currently renting the base model with steel hub caps while on holiday. Is OK. Steering way to light and disconnected. Quite a practical car. Base model seems to get up to speed without much protest. Needs a digital speedometer as mentioned. Fun fact, the eclipse cross was supposed to be this car's replacement, but Mitsubishi decided to keep both running. I think the eclipse cross would be a worthy upgrade.

I have done a extended test drive of the Haval H6 GT Ultra (4 door SUV Coupe body) and while its bang for buck is there in term of turbo petrol and basically every thing else that Haval can think of in terms of features the 3 key areas that let it down are: - awful driving position, screw them for making a seating position that does not fit anyone over 6foot tall, also what the heck was with the forward lurching feeling, no matter how hard I tried to get comfortable I could not, I exited the vehicle and my legs were like jelly and that was only after a 1 hour drive, just YUCK, fix the seating position Haval. - Dual clutch transmission, major issue? its a DRY clutch set up and the shift posits are dog crap for metro start stop driving, I don't see how that transmission will last in heavy start-stop traffic and I know for a fact that owners of the Jollion and H6 (normal SUV one) are going back to dealerships to get new transmission (not even clutches actual new transmissions) installed under warranty. - Durability and reliability, no one really knows how they will survive our roads and environment, I mention above people i know bought Haval and within weeks had buyers regret, i know on person that has had 3 DCT transmissions installed, they are now using ACL to get a refund but the dealerships are making life hard for that owner and as such the owner now has gone to NCAT to force the issue. To use Latin "Caveat Emptor" in English: Buyer Beware.

Don't lety review stop you from taking it for a test drive. It's got everything they can think of and a Bi-Modal exhaust when in sports mode, that said they forgot to tune the steering and suspension for our roads, it reminded me of a very soft plush 1980's car that was devoid of life (in the sense that it does not engage the driver to push beyond let's say 4 tenths). With regards to the transmission, it's a dry clutch set up and in heavy Sydney stop start traffic it reminded me of driving a manual and riding the clutch and lurching, I used the paddle shifters in both drive auto and sports manual and the shift points are all wrong, seriously 1st the 2nd in auto saw no joke 3,550 on partial throttle before the shift kicked in in sports manual mode I got it to upshift at 2,500rpm and the engine started to labour and the override kicked in forcing it back to 1st gear which caused the engine to rev hard and then upshift was jerky, granted I was testing it so could be a bit harsh but if it did that for me then I suspect it would do that to all who try to get more from it. Also the seating position, I'm 6"2 and no matter how hard I tried I could not get the seat to tilt Inna laid back position, it felt like I was being pushed forward as the seat base is way to short but again everyone is different. Go take one for a test drive, on the plus side? Engine has very strong mid range and lives 3rd and 4th gear in sports manual mode, you can keep it at 3,500 to 4,000rpm and have zero turbo lag, that said the steering and suspension can't keep up. As for the rest of the Haval H6 Ultra GT? Give Hslav credit, they threw everything and the kitchen sink at it features wise, shame about the engereering.

Just out of interest, Mitsubishi Australia does provide the ASX with the option of a "Full size spare wheel kit", "...$275...". "...If you prefer, you can add a full-size spare wheel to your vehicle. An accommodation kit is available that allows a full size spare wheel (Sold Separately) to be carried. This kit raises the level of the boot floor just enough to allow the full-size spare wheel to fit into the spare wheel well...". "...NOTE: Wheel and tyre sold separately, please contact your Mitsubishi dealer for price...". Cheers.
