Regarding getting a second dog: If I could just say, based on our experience as a long term Cav (and other) owner, ...1) Two or more dogs are easier than one, as they keep each other company, don't fret as much while you are away, and stop you worrying that they are alone. BUT... in order of preference ...2) Cavs prefer the company of other Cavailers or 2) A dog with some Cav in them or 3 ) A small quiet dog of gentle nature or 4) Or a large but very gentle dog such as a Lab or Golden Retriever. Having had both Cavs and rescue dogs in the home I would avoid Terriers and hounds - any dog that can easily get into 'the red zone' of anger. The thing to remember is 'Cavs like Cavs'. And, the more Cavs the better.... (not meaning to hijack the answer - just learnt by our mistakes over the years.)

Love your channel, learning so much Our 7.5 month old, 16.2 lb. female is in her first season. Is she likely her final height/weight? She's a food diva, overeating is not an issue for her. For us, sure, not her. Thanks.

I have to tell you that Bootsie has a Special place in my heart ❤️ I actually can’t wait to watch your videos to see if I’m going to get to see her. She is just so beautiful, adorable and smart. Her hair coloring is so stunning and goodness me those ears just so long and lovely, along with her tiny muzzle and perfect places eyes and kissable have. And the love she shows for you (and your wife) truly shows how amazing you two are. Very admirable 🥰🐾❌⭕️

A second comment about eye discharge. If the discharge is yucky/smelly, I'd first consult with my vet to ensure the dog doesn't have an eye infection or some sore of medical condition causing the discharge. If that's ruled out, Charlie is spot on with keeping the area clean. We have a little poodle mix (got her for my birthday 3 years ago--best birthday present ever) that will get tear stains if we don't keep her eyes clean. We use a wet wash cloth and "Angel Eyes" wipes. That keeps the tear stains at bay.

I wanted to comment on puppy chewing. Charlie is completely right about substituting what they're chewing on (that they shouldn't be) with an appropriate item to chew is a great way to handle this issue. As a behavior consultant, one of my pet peeves is people who play with puppies (and adult dogs) by waving their fingers/hands around, teasing the dog with your hands/fingers by shoving them at the dog's mouth, etc. Don't do that!! That makes your puppy think your hands/fingers are appropriate chew toys (which they are not) and will only encourage your puppy to chew on your hands/fingers. The puppy should learn that human hands are good things, but a good chew toy is not one of those good things. Hands are for stroking/petting and providing food/treats. Not for playing. Provide your puppy with a variety of appropriate chew toys and learn which are your puppy's favorites. If you have enough, rotate them so they don't get boring. Use management--you don't want your puppy to chew the remote control, keep it out of your puppy's reach (yes, there will be times you use it, put it next to you and the puppy will grab it--that's when you use substitution). But try to get into the habit of putting things (like shoes, handbags, remote controls, etc.) that you don't want your puppy chewing on in the closet (with the door closed) or in a high place where puppy can't get to it. You can get special toys that you freeze for your puppy to chew while teething. One of my favorite "toys" for chewing puppies is to wet a washcloth and tie it in knots and put it in the freezer over night. The next day, that provides a great chew toy (not to mention an inexpensive chew toy) for your teething puppy. If your puppy "attacks" and chews at your clothes as you walk by, try not to wear loose-fitting clothes that "move" when you walk. That's quite attractive to a puppy to pounce and chew on! If your puppy grabs your pants/skirt, stand still. Don't yell "no" or remove the puppy. Just ignore him or her. Most puppies will get bored after a few seconds (the thing that attracted them is no longer waving around and it becomes very boring and not much fun) and will go on to something a lot more interesting. If your puppy is one of the few who persists in chewing your clothing, you will can use substitution and direct the puppy to a more appropriate "object de chew". No need to "punish" the puppy for any chewing mishaps. Use a combination of management, substitution, and providing them with plenty of appropriate chew toys and you'll have the problem licked in no time. By the way, chewing doesn't stop when the puppy is done teething. Most dogs still love to chew even as adults. So you'll need to keep a variety of appropriate chew items around for your dog even when he/she is an adult. As a warning about appropriate chew toys, supervision is sometimes necessary. I had a Great Dane who loved to chew on plush squeaky toys, but she'd disembowel the toy, remove the squeaker, and then proceed to consume the stuffing. I still let her have her fun by "killing and disemboweling" the toy, I just substituted the toy with a nice piece of hot dog before she could consume the stuffing. She would go for the hot dog and I could pick up the toy without "fighting" her for it or running the risk of a snap or bite by taking something away from her that she dearly wanted. So there may be toys were supervision is required, but other toys that are safe for you to leave your dog with. Stuffed Kong toys and treat dispensing toys are usually made of pretty durable rubber and are generally safe for most dogs without close supervision (but there are always "super chewers" are are exceptions to this rule, but a Cavalier probably wouldn't be able to tear those kinds of toys apart).

Bootsie got kinda saucy near the end - i thought i made myself clear 😂 I have always found it helpful instead of saying no to show them what they can do. That's what you said with the chewing. With toddlers, it's a "redirect.". Your chewing example is perfect but that concept also works great with like stealing items (my cav always steals stuffed animals, oh, she says borrow not steal. I show her one of her plush toys then take the stuffie). Since you were lightly explaining genetics, will you explain how blue merel tri-color happens and if it's predictable. Do any of the other 3 coat colors/patterns have a common varient?
@chaskat35
@chaskat35 7 ай бұрын
There is no Cavalier gene for merle - the only way it can be produced is to cross-breed with a different breed of dog ... so it's not truly a Cavalier at all.

@@chaskat35 Thank you! My friend was raving about a blue merel Cavalier puppy she saw and I was so confused! I have a tri, but she is my first Cavalier and I am still learning! I used to show/handle, raise, rescue, & breed chow chows. Chows do have a solid blue variety but I was fairly certain that Cavalier don't. Good luck to Apple, Jamba, and I forget who else at the dog show.

I have a 10 month old King Charles Cavalier with blue eyes is this rare or a defect
@chaskat35
@chaskat35 6 ай бұрын
It's a very rare anomoly, and caused by a mutated gene that can pop up in any breed. It is a deviation from the Breed Standard, which calls for very dark brown eyes. If you were showing the dog, it would be considered a fault, but it should not have any effect whatsoever on your dog's suitability as a wonderful pet. Just make sure to have your vet check your puppy's eye health when he goes in for a regular checkup, to make sure his eyes are otherwise healthy.

I see people are now saying they are selling chocolate cavaliers. Is this a new designer colour? I thought there were only the four colour combinations.
@chaskat35
@chaskat35 6 ай бұрын
There are 4 and only 4 acceptable colors. These are dogs that simply do not meet the Breed Standard, which specifies the colors. They could be the result of a cross-breeding with another breed of dog, or more likely just a genetic anomoly. They very rarely occur, and if a reputable breeder were to have one, he/she would just place the puppy in a good home, and never consider breeding to it.
