I loved this, and thank you both, Inna and Dasha! To take a position you do not hold and defend it well, is a splendid way of showing respect to those who think differently and demonstrates that you understand your own position. I learned a lot during this presentation!

Both are important! Grammar without speaking practice gets you nowhere, but speaking without grammar sounds strange and confusing. :)

Ничего себе, это был интересный разговор, хотя должен сказать, что я не был удивлён, потому что я знал это будет очень хорошо!

I studied Russian at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Ca back in 192-1993. Or 93-94. We studied a BUNCH of grammar and had native Russian teachers. But when I went to Russia in summer of 1994, I was most confused about little words , like Ccccchac for meaning in a few minutes. The in between word, vot really confused me. Or when the accent was changed like to say “at night” Na noch with the accent on na. It WAS helpful however that I had some grammar background. I was at a children’s camp in Yaroslavl. It was possible to understand the simple wording used with kids. But it took me lots of trial and error. Of course I understood more than I could say, like a baby when he/she learns their native language

Dasha, when we answer no, we must use negative sentence eg: -do you speak French? -No, I don't.

Я говорила про отрицательный вопрос. Don’t you speak English? No.

In Asia grammar is always taught as primary. That is why nobody can speak English in general. Better to speak then refine the rough edges with grammar as needed. If I started with grammar I couldn't speak any other foreign languages and just give up.

It depends on the country. In Japan yes, but in some countries, students don't seem to care about grammar, like maybe in Korea and the Philippines, and talk freely.
