Phillip is such a ham - wonderful! From someone with a degree in English literature, I think we are both doing fine. Landscaping is a major task - weeding is a nightmare. Hours of toil with a mantra - "this will look great once we plant." I hear you on wisteria! It is such a romantic plant that turns into a stalker. Along with potato vine, jasmine - now it is hops for me. Add ivy along the way. I just keep some of these plants in my life ( for fragrance and torture) whilst acknowledging - they are trying to end my gardening life. OR my actual life. As I have said before, we step into your journey down the track and you have already done so much - amazing! One bit of advice with gardens - when I had 100 acres, first property here in TAS - I could not step outside without seeing work. I lost sight of the beauty and why I moved here in the first place. 20 years on - different space, I still have work but I can step back and celebrate the achievement and beauty. Enjoy lovlies, as I enjoy all you do xx

Phillip, for future reference, there is a procedure called ‘heeling in’. You take your newly purchased plants, dig a trench and lay them in the trench and fill it back in. This will keep the plants moist and viable for a couple of weeks or so. When you are ready to set them out, they will be easy to lift and plant into their permanent location. As an example, when I moved to my new house in the late fall of the year I was able to heel in my favorite plants in my friend’s vegetable garden for the winter. I was able to prepare their final locations and plant them in the spring. I did not loose even one plant! In the meantime, all the best to you and Anna and the girls. We enjoy your videos soooo much!!! Sarah and Michael

Oh my gosh! Many years ago we did the front lawn of our first house with a pallet just as you did. Then we set the pallet aside in the yard and our 2 girls (who were your daughters ages then but are your age now) used it for many, many adventures. I tell every new parent "The best toy we ever gave our daughters was a pallet and permission to dig a hole beside it." That pallet was often a ship, it took them down rivers as a raft and across seas as a ship. It was a magnet for many of their childhood/neighborhood friends....I think the funniest thing was when it was the slave drivers seat as a couple of kids got in the muddy hole and made bricks by stomping in the mud in the hole with grass clippings from the lawn while the oldest among them sat on the throne (the pallet) and yelled at the two in the hole to keep going... (that was the year they watched the 10 Commandments with Charleston Heston). I did lose some flatware and other treasures in that hole so beware and buy them a child size shovel for the hole.

you can do a no-dig method if you have a large area? cover the ground with cardboard then a load of compost/horse muck then topsoil and just cut through to plant your trees/shrubs/bulbs; it's a quick way of building up the soil and suppresses the weeds while its at it. the cardboard decomposes and adds to the structure. You just add compost/leaf mould/manure and you will find your plants will thrive.

A gardening knife might come in handy, Phillip. I've heard lots of good reviews about the Japanese Hori Hori knife. It's useful for planting, weeding, digging and cutting. You can buy it with a sheath and a sharpening stone. Lots to choose from on Amazon. The Mexican Orange Blossoms look wonderful! I looked them up online and found that they like moderate moisture so liberally water weekly and more often in extreme heat. They will reach 6 to 8 ft. tall and slightly wider. They are evergreen shrubs that keeps their leaves for winter interest. The fragrant orange blossom-like flowers and glossy, soft green leaves emit a pleasant citrus odor when crushed. Good to know! 😊 Fun video with your sweet little daughter. She might ask for more pallet rides now!

Phillip you have to start working on Anna for a tractor! My husband started hopefully suggesting (I won't say nagging) about 5 years ago. About two years ago we had a choice a) a new car or b) a new tractor for our 50 acres. Still driving a bomb and we have a tractor. It makes many of the jobs that used to take so long and killed our backs, so much easier. He even takes the bins down to the road in the tractor bucket. You can show Anna this - you need a tractor.

When your roses bloom, be sure and can some of the petals (rose jelly!) and even preserve entire blossoms with stems in mineral oil (my mother used to do this with us as children in autumn, with branches of leaves which were turning brilliant colors). We’ve also enjiyed pressing the flowers in old books, only to discover them years later. I love Stephanie’s (from Chateau Lalande) little trick of pulling perfume samples from magazines and using them as book markers. You could jot down the date and trace around the girls’ handprints on the backs of the little perfume inserts, so you know years later where and when you’d found the flowers, recording the size of their hands in the process! :) Sorry I give unsolicited advice so often, Philipp and Anna! I just want to be a part of your journey, as being a viewer of these precious moments and milestones endears us all to you. We (and I am sure I speak for others, here) feel a sense of closeness to you and almost feel like best friends or family. With love from Wisconsin, USA. P.S., watching your girls grow up freshly unearths many fond memories of my own daughter, now almost 24. They grow up so fast. Cherish every moment. PPS, I would love to come and design your girls’s rooms and play area! I have 20 years of experience with classroom setups and just really enjoy the early childhood years. Such wonderment and excitement children have of the world. It is contagious when around them! Looking forward to finishing this playlist of yours so I can follow current videos when they come out. :)

I learned about an inexpensive and green way to suppress weeds that actually improves your soil - it's the lasagna method. You add cardboard (remove plastic tape), water thoroughly, add compost over top, water thoroughly. Then apply the wood mulch. It's ideal to do this in the fall as winter rain/ snow helps to break down cardboard. Using homemade compost is ideal as you can apply the chunky stuff. You can also put the cardboard down directly over grass, but do make sure most weeds are removed. Over time, if weeds appear - remove weeds and add more layers of cardboard and compost. If you haven't already, I would find a corner of your land to begin a compost pile. Cheap, easy and green.

Good for you consulting a landscaping professional! She’s spot on! I didn’t realize the ”sea of white gravel” was your design, the muted pink underneath is so pretty and harmonizes with the old house. Love orange blossom, smells heavenly! Have a look at the façade of the house from a distance, and on a small screen, your zoomed out shots. It looks like the entrance has been masoned shut. It’s the color. The façade advances more than the door which receeds and looks flat. Definition to the entrance of the house is important to look alive and welcoming, so I’d give it some thought, and consider a color that’s neither too light or too dark so dimensions don’t flatten from afar. As I know you are into monochrome looks I’d suggest using slightly different shades for door and surrounding trim, a common architectural trick in interiors as well. Slight differences in shade can make a tremedous difference to bring out dimension and architechtural details in all wood work, crowning, moulding, etc etc. Different shades for the different angles/planes is often used in historic interiors to accentuate the craftsmanship of period carpentry, ie a not nessecarily very noticable difference in color, sonetimes just a difference in saturation that looks more like the play of light and shadow of dimension than anything else. Just a suggestion. I think the hedges around the house will make it alot more grounded and solid. All gravel creates a rendered look, reminds me of a CAD sketch, so foliage will be a huge improvement to the overall impression I’m sure! I love your technique of ”flattening”! ❤️🙌

#humorbyphillip is all that. Not just the child pallet, but the James Bond-gets-on-his-tractor, tres drole. Running joke: "gotta do everything twice". Keep up the humor expression! great.

This came up on my feed a day late - very strange. I love the opening- the humor along with Chateau life is pure gold. I didn’t realize how beautiful the area is around your home and other properties. This is a beautiful drive up to your Chateau!

I have the same weed pulling tool, and every neighbor that passes me using it has to stop and ask about it. I used it so much I broke it after 3 months, but it has a lifetime guarantee so they just sent me a new one! Great episode!

So smart of you to hire a professional landscaper. They will help get the scale of the planting area and plants correct. Always a challenge with a large property. I don’t think you put any fabric down before the much so WELL DONE!!!! The fabric is not beneficial to your plants. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you and no, not a fan of fabrics either

@@HowToRenovateAChateau Natural burlap around a root ball can be left in place after the top is opened once in the planting hole. To prevent drying out & damage on larger root balls, it's often better to plant them burlap & all. The natural burlap will disintegrate in the ground. Obviously this does not count for man made fibers that must be removed.

There is a black garden fabric you can put around plants to stop any weeds from growing. Or you can use cardboard boxes flattened. Then put the mulch on top

I love your vlog, your chateau, your family, your humor! Thank you for sharing your journey. When moving mulch, use a pitch fork or manure fork, so much easier than a shovel.
