If you haven't planned for this already, a little wood stove in the cottage would be a warm retreat just in case. Looking forward to seeing your cutting garden take shape. If you have the time and enough light, you can start from seed now in cell packs, or directly sow into the soil once the ground temps warm up. Definitely more economical and if it doesn't work, there's always the garden center :). Wishing you peace and light during this very difficult time.

Oh Abby I can hear the sadness in your voice. And added to that the issues with the Chateau. Take each day and just give time TIME. You gave Chloe the best life. In time who knows you may get another puppy. I did. The pain, the grief, the love of losing her after 13.5 years was at times unbearable. So because of that pain I knew I had so much love to give and that new puppy helped heal that grief. Unbelievably so 🐶Love, peace and light to you Abby ❤️🕊️☀️

Abbie, my heart is sad for you, for the loss of Chloe and for coming back to the chateau and being faced with no heat and the broken fountain water pump. Grief can make everyday struggles feel even worse. Our pets truly become a part of our family and their deaths can be deeply felt, especially if we have also had a trauma loss in our life, as you have. Sending you a big hug of support. Once the heating is back up and running smoothly, and the sun comes out again, I hope you can find moments of joy to help sustain you. Maybe another pet? Wishing you a Happy 2025!

Abby, get an electric blanket to keep you warm while you read, write letters, paint or start another book. I just finished your first book and it was an inspiration navigating through incredible loss. A follow up book about successfully raising your children, the homes you made in the Seattle area, and your chateau life would be exciting to read. When I think about your Chloe, I am glad that she lived through that period over a year ago when she was so sick. I’ve never been able to have a dog or cat because of my son’s asthma, even though he is now 54. I want my house free of anything that would compromise his health when he comes for a visit. I hope you get another pet to ease your loss and thank you for sharing your life with us. I hope the sun comes out soon and they fix your heat. ❤

Chloe was such a good girl, and I liked watching her roam around. 5 years ago my husband passed (he had Alz) at 68 and 3 months later my cat of 18 years passed as well. I decided that would be it. My daughter-in-law got lung cancer 3 years ago and my son asked me to take care of their 21 lb cat lol ..She's still here.. My middle son passed away a year ago and I have to say, she was very comforting to have here in my saddest days. Moral of my story is that cats are wonderful companions and do well with dogs. They are independent and need less attention. I hope you decide to feed the little one and possibly make a new friend. Chloe will always be missed!!

That is their way, it seems. Kittens or a cat will suddenly show up at a place they are needed even tho the owner didn’t know they were needed😅. My daughter’s beloved golden retriever, Cleo, died at 8 years old and she swore no more, heartbroken. She was distraught. Then my granddaughter showed up with a Malumute 1 1/2 year old that her friend couldn’t keep. Within days she was in love, she even couldn’t believe it. If you are a pet lover, don’t wait too long to get another. Wont take place of your lossed one but it will fill that empt place in your heart. ❤❤❤

The best antidote for feeling down is to plan a flower garden (at least it is for me). Escaping into the world of beautiful blooms you get to choose for your new space and that will adorn your chateau is something you can start right now. Look for what other gardeners in your area grow easily and begin with that. There may be a local gardening group or Facebook group that can advise you on what to choose. Your local garden centre probably has the right seeds for your area already on the shelves. You could look there too. For your zone you can likely easily grow zinnias from seed that you direct sow in late April or early May. Cress is great for a filler. There are also flowers that like to be sown in cool soil in the spring like Larkspur, Bells of Ireland and Orlaya. Have fun dreaming of bouquets you could make with all the beautiful things you choose! 🌸

Winter weather has it charm when there is heat in the house and a roaring fire in the fireplace. Thank goodness you have a fireplace to keep you warm. Just think that March is not far behind Abby. I am getting a dog in the Spring to help ease the pain of my little guy that I still miss and it has been two years. I did not think we would ever get another one but never say never, right. Life at times can deal us a really bad hand. The little things that we can easily handle become all the more difficult when we are dealing with a loss like yours of Chloe. And truly, with the cottage, the non-working fountain pump leading to the loss of the koi, the breakdown of the heating source, and the tenuous cliff ready to collapse, you are dealing with a lot right now. And truly, if the heating pellets aren't delivered very soon, check into a B&B, gite, or hotel to stay warm. Or perhaps invest in some ceramic heaters for your bedroom, bathroom, and where you spend the most time to make it tolerable now and have an emergency backup should this happen again. Be good to yourself as you work through Chloe's loss and these big bumps in the road.

Hi Abby, i wanted to quickly share with you that because the cottage hasn’t had windows, doors and heat installed yet, the inside rooms are open to outside winter weather conditions. That is why you’re getting a lot of condensation and dampness inside the building. If you cover / enclose the windows and doors with thick plastic and put some portable electric/oil heaters on the main and upper floors, the warmth could be enough to reduce and minimize all that dampness. So very sorry to hear about Chloe. Sincerest condolences to you. Losing a beloved pet is the worst. Go easy on yourself, take time to grieve but do not deny yourself the companionship of another, furry beastie. They are hugely comforting and bring joy, and there are so many rescue and shelter dogs that are in desperate need of a loving home and master. Your heart is big and has huge capacity to love in any circumstances. Chloe loved you and wouldn’t want you to suffer. 🐶❤️ How frustrating about your pellet stove! I hope you’re able to sort its issues out soon and without too much trouble. Please know you are not alone in your home maintenance issues! I feel your frustration and I sympathize. (The capacitor that is part of our home’s well water pump system just failed last night while I was running a bath. Argh. So until my husband fixes it, we have to bring in drinking water and use buckets of water from our pond to flush our toilets. He has to source the replacement part before he can fix it. We’re hoping it’s not the pump itself, which is at the bottom of our 250 foot deep well. And of course it’s the middle of winter here on here BC’s west coast…these things never seem to happen when it’s warm, do they? But, on the bright side, it’s Monday and the electrical stores are open all week.) Wishing you a wonderful New Year ahead 🎉, with much joy, laughter, prosperity and a beautiful cutting garden full of flowers. It doesn’t seem like it now, but spring and new growth popping is just around the corner. The sun and warmth is coming! Xo

Hi, sorry to hear you are having a tough go for the new year. the party looked fun! Koi need a heater during winter. You can get gold fish that have beautiful color and they are much hardier. Mine have survived my pond being solid snow. Your leaves can be toxic too depending on what kind of tree they are from. good to see you back.
@old-wise-one4473Күн бұрын
The moisture you see on the wood and stone is condensation as you don’t have a weather tight building yet. Once you do and get the heat on that will dry it out assuming you don’t have water percolating through the cliff walls. What we did was use perlite pellets wedged between the wall framing which had a vapor/water barrier on the outside surface and the stone wall so water could seep down and out via drainage along the floor area. We also added a bit of air flow to evaporate any moisture in the cavity using a fan which was driven based on the humidity of the day.

Keep your water heated with a heat pump. OH just heard you have one...put some heated or boiled big rocks in the pond or dig down deeper where it might be safe to have fishes...have twice as much pellets for backup

Here is what I learned., 1) ceramic electric space heaters are the most effective 2) thank goodness I have a woodstove here in Washington 3) Insurance claims adjustors are not available during the holidays. 4) you might consider putting in a wood insert or stove downstairs at the “mansion chateau” saves money! 5) Dear Chloe is there with you in spirit❤

Buy a good quality upholstery-grade sewing machine and make the curtains yourself. It is not difficult and is very therapeutic. :) I would put the cottage on hold for now and would concentrate on making the main structure fully income-producing. I am concerned about the cottage' structural integrity and humidity issues given how close it is to an unstable hillside. It seems like a money pit to me, and you may be better off without the headaches and continuous expenses. Very sorry about Chloe.

This type of property would traditionally have a couple of people living permanently who would be able to take care and alert on problems when they arose. A big old property that has not been lived in for a couple of weeks, particularly in the winter, is hard to come back to. This return has been unforgiving. Force et courage to you piloting this solo. You're getting there! As for the cottage, are there hygrometry experts in the area? It may be worth seeking their advice on the humidity.
