Hello! I’m Vivienne, the châtelaine of a small 19th century neo-Renaissance castle in the Loire Valley of France, which I share with my delightful (and wonderfully funny!) husband, Simon, our teenage daughter, pets, and -whenever possible- lovely friends and family.
This is not our first chateau! 20 years ago, we bought a much larger castle nearby, which we loved with all our hearts. However, nearly 18 years, many happy memories, countless renovations, and several small fortunes later, we made the very difficult, empty-nesting decision to downsize. With great luck and perseverance, we found our current petit château, which we are now decorating and updating with love, humour, comfort, and -of course- antiques and art!
We adore France and its many unique facets: its people, culture, landscapes, wine, food, art, and history. We also love being surrounded by châteaux, both public and private, which we can explore together! After 20 years here, we have learned many things about living in France, renovating châteaux, and appreciating the extraordinary riches surrounding us. We originally decided to make these videos as a way to share our lives with our loved ones worldwide during the pandemic lockdowns. However, we soon realised that many others are at home alone, and it is our privilege to open our home to you, our new friends. We hope you will join us on our adventures in this exceptional location, and we look forward to sharing a little Château Love!

Whilst travelling on a train between Florence and La Spezia, in Italy a few years back, I commented to my husband that the white mountains in the distance looked like Carrera marble, and lo and behold, the next station was Carrera. Your feature brought back the happy memories of that day. The colours of your en suite are lovely. I also have a small collection of antique handmade lace and embroidered linens, and love the re-use of the cloth as a curtain and artwork (very inspiring). You are both so creative and gifted, using your skills to create a lovely space for yourselves.

@@ChateauLove Yes, I learned this amazing craft while living in the North of England in the late 70's. What an amazing group of ladies to take on this young American girl to teach to art of lacemaking! Although I don't make too much lace anymore, it has given me such an appreciation of the hours and hours and hours of work that goes into any lace project. Just making an inch of a simple one inch wide lace takes about 20 minutes.....so 3 inches an hour! I made a lovely linen hankie with a lace surround for a cousin of mine during my early days and told her is she EVER used it as a hankie, I would haunt her! She had it framed and returned it to me a couple of years ago when she was downsizing! What a lovely gift!

Vivienne, what an amazing art project for the water closet! I have pieces of lace that dates back to my great-grandmother (born 1826) which has been in my family for 4 generations and you've just opened up a brand new way of showcasing it!! Thank you! Colin: A rose de fromage!!! How quaint and very cheeky.... Your 1st attempt though, resembled more of a carnation... So you could certainly offer 'L'Oeillet de fromage pour Monsieur'. The word "carnation" is a derivative of the word "coronation". Traditionally carnations were offered to royalty to denote fascination and distinction. In Ancient Greece, carnations were fashioned into laurel wreaths (called coronets) to indicate a victor of high born class. These were used during ceremonial events such as coronations and openings of parliaments. The carnation is of the 'dianthus' family of flowers and the word means 'Flower of the Gods". So, royal men not only wore lace made for them, they also were crowned with carnations. You know, perhaps you could tint or use fabric paint on the shower curtain to give it a lovely texture that would match the 2 Grecian painting on either side. It could be as simple as strokes of a 1" brush across it or just the hem and top or a leaf motif that would mirror the buffet sinks. Use the contrast color, not cream or white. There is a lot of white surrounding you and the curtain stands out as a little "too modern".
