Thanks for the wonderful interview. Brett was my main instructor when I attended the GIT in the 80s, and I learned so much from him. Not only that, I was so blown away by both his musicality and his personality... such a wonderful human being, a great teacher, an awesome guy. So much fun to listen to this interview.

Great interview, it’s a testament to Brett that you can revisit the “let me out” solo all these years later and there’s still nothing like it even today. No wonder we were all so blown away when we saw it back in the mid eighties!! Keep up the great work on the channel, I can see this becoming something big.

YT jumped to this. I had no idea who this guy is but it is a great interview. Being a drummer i have never focused on guitarists but as a still playing musician i can really appreciate this. The references to Richie are right up my street as he has written and made some superb music and always surrounded himself with incredible musicians. Great questions and answers.

I saw Brett for the first time when I was 17, in Dec 1986 playing with Farnham, just after Whispering Jack was released, at Essendon Airport. As a keyboard player, I was hanging out to see Hirschfelder, but I had the same reaction to Brett as you did Rick! I'd never seen anyone play guitar like that! Just wow! Where did this guy come from?? My ears were ringing for 2 days!

Another great interview Rick. I have known about Brett's history for a long time but nice to hear some new stuff, especially on the early pub days. My older brother always used to say that the scene around central vic was busy you could see a local cover band most nights of the week and they were all great players, but there was one guy who always stood out :)

The video was demonetised because of that, but is worth it to put Brett’s plying into perspective. Every teenage kid in Australia who was learning to play guitar in the 80s knows about that solo!

I saw Brett for the first time about 18 months ago at the Macedon Railway Hotel for a blues night with various artists . We were front row and Brett came on with a black Gibson SG playing slide. Rory Gallagher stuff I believe. WOW, WOW, WOW he was FN awesome. Actually got some video of him playing that angle style and it’s fantastic.

Great interview and thanks for the kind words Brett. Honestly the only change I've made to the old 71 Marshall was to add a master volume which Dale Sherlock cleverly fitted without holes and butchery so it can easily be reversed. I used the Altair load box for years until I settled on a Marshall Power brake. It's appeared on 100's of recordings since I've owner it. When I first acquired it, the speakers were G12M-70's because the original 25's were fried. I replaced them with Celestion Centuries for live shows which made the cab heaps lighter. Recently I've retired it from gigs and fitted it with some '74 Cream-backs I found in an old Eminar cab. It's sounding better than ever.

That is great to hear Dave! I'm so glad that amp found a great home and to know that it's in very good hands. I was looking for a video you did where you used an Axe FX to simulate Jeff Beck's tone and solo from "Led Boots" and it was astonishing. If it's still on KZbin please let me know where to find it! I hope you're doing well during the wierdest time of our lives and if this ever ends, I look forward to us getting to catch up.

@@brettgarsed that Jeff Beck segment in in my (infamous hahaha) AXE FX fail clip at the 6 min mark. I think perhaps I should post those sound demos separately. Andrew F was kind enough to send me an upgraded unit as a replacement so I'm running the MkIIXL now.

I was also at a Frank Gambale seminar around the same time (30+ years ago). Michael Gontier (he worked at Ron Leigh's) picked up Frank's fluoro Ibanez and said his action was so low that the strings were virtually touching the frets. I can't remember much else, apart from him saying how his career exploded when he got into modes. He also said this about something like this about playing live: "some people get nervous about making mistakes. If you make a mistake, so what?! Big deal! Play it again!"

Finding a style of your own. Hmm. I’ve been trying to do that since after my first cover band. Had 3 guitars in the band. Did Lizzy. Skynyrd Bad Co just whatever we loved. Never Purple. We didn’t have the incredible keys needed and vocal as well. Anyway I’m still on my journey in search of the lost scale and note. I can’t name a scale yet. I’m trying to keep it like that. As far as music I love Glenn Campbell to Jimi. My journey continues! God bless all of you and those you love. I always thought Zappa couldn’t read music. It seems he approaches it that way sometimes rest in peace cFrank. I haven’t heard this guy yet. Alls I’ve seen so far is the clop of him doing taps. So many talented guys out there. Frank Gambale. Benson. Bill Nelson. Kim Mitchell. I’m trying to mention some I feel deserve more recognition. The guy who played with Holdsworth. Ollie Halsall. Check him out. I’m staying away from scale lessons. But am trying to learn different styles of fingerpicking as like finger rolls, and those things. I find them extremely hard. But the people that are good at them can do such different things. It makes me want to sit and learn it even more. I kind of got bored when everyone wanted to play Neo Yngwie. it seemed everyone was doing it. I was stuck on Gary Moore at that time. Not so much stuck as defending the way, he approached guitar. He even put blues into his rock. JohnnyWinter. fantastic. He played with one guy for a while on the captured live album. His name was Floyd Radford. Excellent guitarist. Don’t think he’s doing much anymore but he’s great. I’ll stop my rambling now. Start talking about guitar and never wants to end. Kinda like that solo you love. Ok. I’m still watching. It’s slide talk. I suck at slide. I’ve not tried open E. But I will. Frank Marino does this thing with his tremolo bar an it really sounds like slide. On his DVD ‘ which is over four hours by the way’ anyway, I think it’s a tune called rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. I know sounds kinda lame, but it’s so cool how he men makes slide playing. I like Tommy Bolen a lot too. He played slide. A fantastic guitarist we lost when I think he was 25. He did so much by then, if you go back and listen to the different things he did with differentbands. Wow. Ok. Thanks , if you read all of this.

Another excellent interview, I'm slowing catching up! I only really got exposed to Brett's genius around the mid 00's when working at CMI (he endorsed several of the products they distributed at the time namely ESP, Digitech and Hughes & Kettner). Went on to get his Rock Fusion video and eventually incorporated the hybrid picking as well as the use of passing notes in my own playing, of course nowhere near his level! Loves his lines and his tone, and he's so generous with his knowledge, top aussie bloke! You'll have to try and get Frank Gambale, Tommy, Ian Moss, Chris Cheney, Irwin and numerous of the other Oz rock legends on board - and I'll try and watch the bloody things! Love your work, Rick.

Man 3hrs, lucky bastard, I sat there wanting more. I wanted lessons from Brett when I lived in Melbourne so bad, but I was still miles away. I remember Dweezil Zappa saying at the melbourne leg of the ZPZ tour that he wanted lessons from Brett too (and he's since spent considerable time learning Gambale's methods). Brett played some improv that night through Vai's Carvin Legacy and he absolutely had a better tone than Vai (who I love), and that's the amp I still have at home!

While "whatever works for you" is the correct attitude, some systems actually ARE better than others, e.g. some system may work better for you than others. You need to learn other systems so you can then incorporate the elements that work for you into your playing.

There is truth in your statement, however, that's not the guitars fault. I disagree that it's overrated. It's an amazing polyphonic instrument. It's unique this way, and can be used to make the most beautiful music, or the contrary. You need to get back to your roots and fall in love with the instrument again. Don't let outside interference rob you of the gift of making music...💚🎸
