With 'Tennis Court', Lorde stated at the time she was obsessed with royalty and history, and there's a really pivotal moment in the French Revolution where revolutionaries were locked out of the offical meeting hall so they instead met on a tennis court. So the song can also be referring to that - hey I'm here to rock the music industry, and if you're not going to let me in, we'll just 'go down to the tennis court and talk it up.'
@lakshyarajsinghtanwar21 күн бұрын
thats what i thought when I read French Revolution in history class i was literally singing this song
@logan423114 күн бұрын
She also mentions how there are kinda dilapidated tennis courts all around NZ and that’s where a lot of students will hang out after school. It’s like lorde and a bunch of other angsty teens who feel like they don’t fit in, meeting up after school to write their own constitution, their own way of living outside of the mainstream
@bigil931622 күн бұрын
I think this album is the reason why some albums like ultraviolence, reputation, and wwafawdwg (billies debut) exist or did well . She started this melancholic dark-synth sound in pop back in 2012 when every song was bright and fun

you should 1000% check out The Love Club EP it is SO underrated and really adds to the portrait of this early stage in her career!! the title track kinda extends the narrative of tennis court, but from a slightly later moment where she’s becoming famous and being surrounded by a bunch of social climbers and poking fun at their absurdity and the weird shit they do to be a part of the “love club” of celebrity/fame. just generally so concerning that she wrote these songs at 16 and crazy how they continue to age so well sonically and lyrically

the timing of this reaction warms my heart. i just gifted this album to my 15 year old nephew for christmas, who is also getting into taylor and more music in general, because he loves writing and music. the themes that comforted me and that meant so much to lorde (and the world) while she wrote them AT HIS AGE, will live on in the next generation. it's so beautiful and timeless.

Lorde's is her stage name, she added the letter e to make "Lord" more feminine, she wanted a strong name with grandeur. She grew up reading poetry (her mum is a poet) and was really interested in royalty and aristocracy. She has always been scarily self aware and wise beyond her years
@honeychild422 күн бұрын
"Why did she name it Pure Heroine?" I think in many ways, the title "Pure Heroine" is apposite to Lorde herself. In the early 2010s, she was a heroine with a pure message - a message of honesty and humanity that resonated with everyone, from fans to her fellow musicians. And "pure" is often used when a drug is good. So I think it's the juxtaposition of pure heroin (drug) and pure heroine, as the female of hero, because she places herself as the “heroine” of her own narrative/of the words she imagines and sings about.

I also love how she romanticises HER particular teenagehood. It is not the concept of being a teenager in general and it certainly isn't the portrayal of teenagehood seen in movies at the time. It is her own experience. Both of the mundane like driving and wanting clean teeth, but also the knowledge that her life is about to change and she may miss this then. I love the lyric about loving these roads where the houses don't change, because she is saying she loves the comfort of that, the predictability and she's about to leave those and get on the plane and start to see everything in a different light. Side note: I grew up in Norway and genuinely do not think I've ever seen a street where the houses look similar enough to say they don't change. So when I moved to Australia and saw streets like that, where even though they may not be exact copy paste they all have such a similar vibe, I would get incredibly claustrophobic and once had a full on panic attack because I got so lost in them. I think it is such an odd thing to love, and I don't think you realise you miss something like that until you've left it behind.

Whenever I listen to this, I think of my best friend in high school, who I had a crush on. A World Alone is the soundtrack to the memory in my mind of my last day of high school, when she and I laid on the floor at the back of the choir room as a movie played, holding hands and playing with each other’s fingers. I felt like I could kiss her right then. We were so close and it felt like we truly were in a world alone. But now I haven’t talked to her in years. Growing up, I guess. It’s such a bright memory, but brilliantly painful and beautiful. ❤
