I think Brian pointed it out correctly, when he said that you are really great at interviewing people and also developing the conversation. My two favourite liveshow hosts on booktube together in one livestream, it's like a dream come true! I honestly don't understand where Brian gets his energy from, I feel like a grandma compared to him even though I am the one who is in her early 20s lol. Loved this episode. And really looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts on A Little Life, good luck with going through that, I am still recovering two year later 🥲😂

I am definitely an outlier on the long/short chapter debate. I usually read in like 10-15 minute chunks which usually is 6-10 pages for me, but I will do that multiple times throughout the day so I still cover the same ground. I can't wrap my head around people who will sit for an hour or two straight and just read 😅.

Great episode! Speaking of not seeing certain booktubers, I had never seen any of Brian's videos. Now he has another subscriber. I want to start reading GGK, will you be my GGK Sherpa and give me a recommendation for a first read? I have been waiting to just stumble upon some of his work in a book store but it ain't happening. I finally read Jeff Vandermeer because he wrote an intro to one of Glen Cook's Dread Empire novels. ( my copy is signed by Glen Cook and Jeff Vandermeer) Shogun is a great book but I would not recommend it to anyone. I read it when I was 13 and you talk about a wild ass book to read at that age 😂. Typing out reviews is frustrating. I prefer talking my way through my thoughts. Usually at my wife(she listens sometimes) and then at the camera 😂. Less polished videos? Do I have a channel for you! 😂 I agree with you about old KZbin. I love mini painting but all the mini painting channels are playing the KZbin "metagame" and the content sucks now. I can't watch it anymore. It just feels like they are making videos to fill the gaps between ads and talking about their sponsorships. Brian is 100% right about Jordan not knowing where he was going sometimes. He didn't even have a set number of days in a week. In one book it is 10 and in another book it is 7 😂. Everyone was super nice in the comments on my WoT video. Other than that one guy that always shows up. He said "everyone knows these facts and you need to be better at making videos" 😂. My wife is one of those "I have to finish the chapter readers". I just set my book down halfway through a page. I have ADHD though 😂. My wife loves that Glen Cook has short chapters. It makes her life easier. I want to read Lord Foul's Bane but I'm scared I will not like it. Thanks for another great episode!

I agree that Wheel of Time is definitely a good beginner fantasy. That's when it'll be most effective. Personally I love the first 4 books and have mixed to hateful opinions on every book after that, but for a new reader a lot of the issues with the series might not weigh as heavy as someone who's read a lot of fantasy. I also think there's a tendency for people to attribute a certain quality to themselves that they believe others are incapable of. And I mean that like...somebody will admit that they started fantasy with something like The Wheel of Time, and they'll love the series and say "oh, I mean *I* started with The Wheel of Time, but *you* shouldn't" and it's like, why? Why are you special that *you* could very specifically get out of it what you did, but others must be incapable? And this attitude just kind of goes for anything where people try to pinpoint the perfect "starting point" like they try to manufacture a perfect beginner's formula, but the thing is nobody really gets into things that way. You get into an author or a series or a genre by starting in the weirdest places most of the time. You go for what appeals to you. And everybody does this but then assumes other people incapable. "Oh *I* read Stormlight before Brandon's other works, but *you* shouldn't" but why?? All his works are fine to start with! He's Brandon Sanderson! It's not like he's James Joyce or something, all his stuff is written so a teenager can read it with ease, it's fine to start wherever! Anyway that's my little rant. I started all sorts of things in "sub-optimal" places. My first death metal album was Lykathea Aflame's Elvenefris, my first Joyce was Finnegan's Wake, I dove into Gardens of the Moon before a million more "entry-level" series, it's just...you know, fine! Start where you're interested! EDIT: oh that also reminds me...I read Book of the New Sun when I was 16! I thought the cover looked cool so I read it and it made no sense and I fucking LOVED it. I read it before Malazan, before Wheel of Time, before a million other SFF books, and it was great! I think maybe this tendency to manufacture the perfect "entry point" to avoid alienating a new reader in any possible way also softens them in a way. If you are only ever slowly introduced into something via its easiest and most digestable examples, how are you going to develop a taste for the weird, the abstract, the less-than-palateable? So yeah! Start fantasy with The Book of the New Sun and Malazan! Do it! That's my take. EDIT 2: great episode, very fun chat

The worst examples of fandoms on booktube i can think based on what I've seen (thankfully not directed at me) are Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere and Cormac McCarthy, especially for Blood Meridian, and that's because death threats became involved. Matt's Fantasy Book Reviews turned off the comments section of his BM review for that reason. I think some of the threats became targeted at his family. Obviously those are very extreme examples but sometimes they permanently colour your perception of a community. I'll still read McCarthy but the community around him and his work, i don't want anywhere near me.

Hey Jimmy just want to say thanks for being an excellent host as always. Your thoughtful approach and even temper really makes me pause and check my attitude a lot. 😅 If you’re open to CWN recommendations someone that the algorithm may not have recommended to you (but has a large channel) is KrimsonRogue. He’s been doing booktube since before Daniel Greene and does extensive 4 hour plus deep dives on books primarily. I think you’d have a great convo with him. Hope you’re doing well Jimmy!
