I think you both would be surprised at the amount of people who truly relate to the conversation you guys had about anxiety, not understanding how to bond or communicate with people over silly things, or any of the other heavy topics you talked about. It's part of why I love watching both of you! You guys understand what that's like and you help us all feel unserstood!

I didn't know Jimmy was a therapist! In all seriousness, though, I really appreciate the transparency and openness of this conversation. Jimmy, I want to thank you for facilitating these conversations. Yes, we get lots of laughs - but we get far more than that too - especially when you give room for your guests to explore themselves. Hearing Allen speak about relationships was especially powerful. I, too, struggle with 'small talk' - because I didn't watch that sports game and I didn't watch that movie or show or etc. Further, establishing and maintaining deep and meaningful relationships is inordinately challenging - relationships are real work and unfortunately it's often emotionally taxing - and guilt-inducing. You know you should reach out to that person, it's been a while - but they haven't reached out either yet; and then you forget and then you remember and you think, "Maybe it's been too long...I should've reached out a long time ago." - when you know, in reality, that they've been going through the same thing because the inertia of everyday life creates just enough friction that you just don't do it - and then you experience an entire melange of emotions that make it all the more difficult. Thank you both for sharing your time with us!

Trying to type into live chat on a live that happened a week ago more than once is humbling. Lol. Allen's disparaging of the classics had mw triggered lmbo. Thanks for the shout out on Alastair Reynolds. Hope you get to it I really think you'll enjoy it or at the least be glad that you'd tried his work. Late to the party, but I had to comment on the thing Allan said about Memories of Ice. If I had to guess what he was talking about, I would say he was probably talking about the timing of Itkovian's choice? If so, I think about it like this : He did what he believed to be the right thing. It's easy to say that he could have waited a couple of hours, and done it after the big fight, but the truth is that would have been immoral. The Imass weren't there because they wanted to fight. They were only there because after thousands of years, they finally had a chance for the ritual to end. They had zero stake in the fight whatsoever. Asking them to fight first would make Itkovian's choice transactional, entirely ruining the intended purpose of his gift. If you see somebody in pain, and you can help them somehow, but you're on your way to the store to buy a Coke, you don't go get the Coke first, you help them first, and worry about your thing later...

@@thefantasynuttwork lol, oh, that's even easier to explain. He was feeling more than just a little out of his depth with all the high powered individuals running around with him. He was a trained Claw, so he probably figured he could use that training to blend in with the enemy army, and gather some intel while essentially being given safe passage to where he could rejoin Dujek's army. He was wrong, but with his skillet I believe any Claw except maybe Topper would have made the same choice.

This was a really good Allen therapy session. A lot of big breakthroughs this episode. Okay, I'm going to make a prediction right now, and that is that Vagabond will be the first manga you straight up DNF (I'm not sure if you've actually DNFd any before) but man it's so bad IMO. You will probably think the first couple volumes or so are okay like I did, so you'll keep reading it, but also like me I predict you will quickly realize after a few more volumes that it's mid and lame AF. It's just fight scenes, that aren't even drawn that well, that last entire volumes and have no depth or storytelling weight behind them whatsoever. It's just cardboard characters fighting each other for entire volumes with the only dialogue being variations of "Wow! He's so strong!" "I must defeat him!" "How can he be this strong?!" "I will defeat him with my superior strength and skill!" Etc. Etc. And LITERALLY multiple pages at a time where the only dialogue is grunting.... Just grunting and it's written out where you have to see and read every damn grunt that these people make. I swear there is probably an entire volume in Vagaond where the only things characters say are "Argh!" "Ahh!" " and crap like that while they are fighting. And it's not even cool fights because they're literally just using wooden swords and freaking sticks and crap!!! Ugh, I really hated it and it put me in a massive manga slump at the time. I wish I could convince you not to read it and save you hours of your life. When you're like 6 or 7 volumes in and realizing how bad it is and are feeling the same way, I want you to remember me and what I have wrote here today. I tried to save you.

I will not stand for Allen's slander against Ulysses (the single greatest novel in the English language). And Ulysses isn't great because it's "challenging" (it isn't), Ulysses is great because it's so FUN. You can't read the following dialogue and not love it: -Who made those allegations? says Alf. -I, says Joe. I'm the alligator. EDIT: Definitely read Gravity's Rainbow, too. It's also not nearly as "challenging" as it's made out to be. Gravity's Rainbow is a psychedelic trip through a surrealist WWII. If you're not in love with it after the first 10 pages and Pirate Prentice's banana breakfast, I'll eat my own hat. So beautiful and funny in the same turn. And Ulysses, when you see what Joyce does with language, you'll be astounded. A chapter written that reincapsulates the entire English language and parodies classic writers as it progresses and eventually turns into (at the time) contemporary Irish slang, or a chapter written to follow musical motifs and structured through songs played by one of the characters, or the chapter that's structured entirely like a hallucinatory play-it's just phenomenal. Joyce redfined what it means to write a novel, not because he was pretentious, but because he simply loved the possibility of form and language. But also, before you read Ulysses, you should read The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, because much of Ulysses is informed by Portrait. Ulysses is almost a sequel. You should also read Dubliners, Joyce's most "conventional" work. Finnegans Wake is the Joyce that you probably won't get through. That one is nigh impossible to decipher (and I love it but can't defend it the way I defend Ulysses). EDIT 2: Sorry for the super long comment, this is my plea for Jimmy to get into modernist and post-modernist literature. Check out DeLillo, Gass, Gaddis! Read it all! EDIT 3: I also find it funny the Allen hates Ulysses if he loves a great command of language, Shakespeare, and the epics. The novel is so intrinsically indebted to both Hamlet and The Odyssey, and Joyce's entire style is the exploration of language.
