The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France with Anna Tifu, conducted by Mikko Frank, perform Chausson's "Poème" for violin and orchestra op.25. Live concert recorded on 14 September 2018 at the Radio France Auditorium.
Firstly entitled Le Chant de l’amour triomphant, then Poème symphonique, before finally, and simply, Poème (as can be seen in the autographed manuscripts), the work by Chausson seems to dispense with any programmatic influences or association with an extra-musical idea. And yet, the primitive title was an explicit reference to the eponymous novel by Ivan Tourgueniev (published shortly before in 1881), a fantastic story in which a violin melody becomes a part of the intrigue. This concertante form is in part influenced by the violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, to whom the work was dedicated, notably in certain compositional traits by Chausson typical of Ysaÿe's performance style.
It is perhaps here, at the intersection of these two influences, that Poème finds its inspiration: between a melody full of mystery and brilliant interjections from the soloist, between poetry and eloquence, without sacrificing viruosic demonstration. The addition of the orchestra is done so quite mysteriously, sustained by phrases from the woodwinds. The solo violin also remains evanescent, a single voice expressing a painful melody. This first movement is followed by a similar atmosphere, shared between the soloist and the orchestra. The second movement becomes animated, as indicated by its title, but maintains an air of tension. The Finale, following much like the previous movement, is full of hopeful colours amidst the bewildered singing of the violin above an immaterial orchestra.

I sometimes wonder what Ernest Chausson thought while he was creating this masterpiece. I often wonder how composers who came up with music that is so beautiful that it makes one cry to listen to it (and beautifully played here). It's not just the magnificent tune. He had to come up with a mature development that would capitalize on the beauty of the theme without going too far away from it. So coming up with the tune was just a small part. Somehow it just came to him. Then the difficult part was crafting the orchestration to not overcome the violin. There's a lot of technical issues that we don't concern ourselves with. It also has to be coherent and stay together. Another stroke of genius was to end the work's solo passage with trills. I always have to "prepare" myself with tissue on the table before I start it. It is so beautiful that it is almost painful. Cheers to the people who give us this stuff. It enriches our lives. I'm reminded of the statement issued by some people was they end their lives: "Never having heard such beautiful music then." Well....actually. I have. It is right here. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

I had never heard of this soloist before, but she's quite good! The piece is filled with musicality and late-romantic goodness, and it's a pleasure to listen to. I feel badly that I haven't really listened to it in quite a while.

Echt bewundernswert!

To me this version is a little too slow comparing to Mr. Heifetz's version... OK I'm talking about two different pieces XD. Don't want to be critical, but I think the lack of speed in Chausson Poeme will in some sense prevent the flow of the music and emotion, and also in Heifetz's word, lack of excitement.
