To add to what skitten said about the Dutch ball hanging torture. In school, during history class, we were taught about slavery and one section in those books was all about methods of torture with 16th-17th century drawings of said torture and one of those regularly used on slaves was hanging by the rib, basically you get a big hook and stab it between a persons rib and then hang them from a pole, alive.

One of my friends dad’s was accidentally keel hauled in the navy during a training exercise. They were doing a mock rescue with a dummy in the ocean and the got the dummy onboard but they left the dad in the water. He was still tied to the ship and got dragged alongside for at least 30 seconds before someone noticed. He was badly cut up but survived. The sailor who was responsible for him was discharged later.

One of my fav historical impalement torture methods (really weird to say) is bamboo impalement. This was done by Imperial Japanese soldiers as recently as WW2. They would place a POW on their back, their arms and legs tied and pulled so they couldn't move, and a bamboo shoot is planted in the ground underneath them. By the end of the first day, the bamboo starts to pierce into the POW's back and into their body, spearing their organs. Within 3-4 days, the bamboo fully grow through the POW's body, sprouting out of their chest or stomach. If it grew through the chest area, then there's not much chance of survival, but, if the bamboo grew through the abdomen, then the chances of surviving long enough to be medically saved is possible, which makes it worse since POW's definitely weren't getting any kind of medical treatment to save them. MythBusters even did a project on this to prove if bamboo impalement was possible, and yes it is possible

The brazen bull was debunked. It was never actually used. Some sources say that it was used only once on the man who created it, but that hasn't been definitively proven.

You know, one time I lost all my fingernails without explanation. I was pretty fucking young and I think I hid them from everyone lmfao fast forward two decades and I have to stab my nail repeatedly and then cut it open further because an infection had started without any reason either and was turning green so, I wasn't about to wait and pay a bazillion dollars to go to the ER*. Doctor yelled at me for that one. Nail was funky for a while. Amazing how your nail has a memory (*There was no Urgent Care at the time)
