Try this simple hack to make your Chayote (Mirliton squash) come back every year. Chayote is a tropical, viney vegetable. It requires at least 6 months of warm/hot temperature before it produces chayote vegetables. I live in TN, zone 7A. So, if you want to experiment with planting chayote feel free to do so, but make sure you know your agricultural zoning. The higher the number the warmer/hotter the climate would be. Areas with Zone 5 and below may not have enough growing season for the plant to produce chayote. If you have a green house you will probably have success and get some chayotes, as the plant vines continue to develop the chayote. Watch my first video on what I did to preserve the root system of the chayote plant. • How To REGROW CHAYOTE ...

The problem with zoning is that it only refers to temperature, which is not enough. For example, we are in zone 8 in UK, which is warmer than you, but because of so much rainfall, roots of this type of plant will usually rot over winter. So it also depends on wet/dry climate.
@wellnessandcountrylife
@wellnessandcountrylife 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your input. I agree with you that too much water can rot the roots. You can try planting using sandy-loam soil, and also try planting on a well-drained, slope area for a better water control

You can plant chayote in a greenhouse, but has to be big enough to fit the whole plant vines and all. Even in a grreenhouse the vines wll die in winter as it's not warm enough to keep it green or thrive. You'd need a heated greenhouse if you want the vines to stay green and intact. Depending on the zone, it may be worth to just let the vine die after bearing fruits but keep the base of the plant mulched with leaves thick as high as 3 to 4 fert and as wide as 4 to 5 feet.

If this is your 5th year of it bearing then you need to save some of this years production to resprout for spring. They generally only produce 4-5 yrs then you need to plant new ones. At least that is what the elders down here tell me. Mine is only 1yr. old so I guess I will find out in 4 more years!😁

@wellnessandcountrylife

Hi! Mud is not as good insulator as mulch. It's the microorganism activity in the decaying mulch that keep the mulch warm. Hay, twigs, leaves, a mixture of leaves, twigs and branches, or shredded cardboard pieces make good mulch.

Why are my leaves yellowing on the edges? How often do you fertilize and what kind of fertilizer? They are still inside growing. Zone 4
@wellnessandcountrylife
@wellnessandcountrylife 2 жыл бұрын
Yellowing on tbe squash can be caused by overwatering or les watering. Soil needs to be moist, but not soggy. Water it at least once a week. Fertlzer with nitrogen, phosporus, and potassium once or twice during growing season. Or add lots of organic matter to your soil.

Your video got me really excited about growing Cayote Squash.
@wellnessandcountrylife
@wellnessandcountrylife 2 жыл бұрын
@@danielleaf9146 since you are in zone 4 it will be more difficult to get your plants to bear fruits, unless you have a greenhouse to start and to extend the growing season. The I've heard the spiky kinds chayote produces quicker and requires only shorter growing period. The smoother-skinned kind takes about 5-6 months growing and bearing time. Tapping or snipping-off the ends can be done at least 5 weeks after planting. 2 months would be better when there is enough vines and tips to cut-off, it will produce more vines and makes it bushier and fuller instead of creeping wider and longer.

Hi, what zone are you in? I live in zone 7A and sometimes we get -20s with wind gust. It's not common though. If you live in zone 5 even 6 you will need a greenhouse to keep your chayote plants grow longer for it to produce chayotes.
