Try this simple hack to make your Chayote (Mirliton squash) come back every year. Chayote is a tropical, viney vegetable. It requires at least 6 months of warm/hot temperature before it produces chayote vegetables. I live in TN, zone 7A. So, if you want to experiment with planting chayote feel free to do so, but make sure you know your agricultural zoning. The higher the number the warmer/hotter the climate would be. Areas with Zone 5 and below may not have enough growing season for the plant to produce chayote. If you have a green house you will probably have success and get some chayotes, as the plant vines continue to develop the chayote.
