very nice idea about the grocery bags. besides those bags, we can also use the potting soil bags that we often end up buying anyway when needing some soil for the garden or for potting up some other things. in fact, because that bag comes with the soil you're going to use for another pot, you can just leave some in the bag and use it that way! as for movement of the leaves, some people use a desk fan that blows on the plants now and then.

Is it hot why she nnd the fan? Or just to make the leaves move keeping them from pest ? Or air circulation... I had chayote indoor then the root rice aphids came... I don't know where they came from so my house is fall of tiny black flying aphids..i used neem oil, anything they say in internet to control them but i still see them flying so i throw away my chayote seedling and switch to hydrophonics.

The fan is for for air circulation and to strengthen the vine. i let it run for a few hours every day. The aphids could be caused by too much humidity or too much watering. I've not had problems with aphids when my chayote plants were growing initially indoor.

Water to keep the soil moist. If you buried the whole chayote, water only aroumd the base not on the base or too close to it to prevent root rot if the chayote is still intact. The chayote has its food and water for the first few weeks, so no need to water a lot until it has a lot of leaves.

Hi Marie - Nice documentary! I have just started my Chokos plants. Its now month number 2. I now see some sprouts and leaves. I wished i saw your video before i planted because i put the whole fruit into the soil :) I do have some questions for you. Can the Chayote grow in the plastic bag or do you have to eventually move it to a bigger pot/ground? The reason i am asking is because I am currently growing two Chayote in a pot that is roughly the size of your plastic bags. In preparation for winter do you have to move the plant back indoor (the ones that you have grown outdoor) or do you leave them outside? TIA!
@wellnessandcountrylife
@wellnessandcountrylife 2 жыл бұрын
Hi I start my chayote plants in containers, then I transfer them in the ground in springtime. Once growing in the ground i leave them in the ground, but I try my best to winterize them to protect the roots, by putting thick mulch around the base of the chayote plants. I live in zone 7. Every year I have 2 or 3 chayote plants come back. The oldest root has been around for 7 years. And I have 3, 2 year - old ones. And the rest are new plants. Every year in the falll/or in winter i start chayote in containers to add to my existing chayotes, because every year it's not guaranteed that my dormant chayotes will come back. I just want to make sure I have 10 plants every year.

Hello! Chayotes like hot weather, and cool weather. Your chayote will be okay, it just takes long to bear fruits..but once it starts bearing fruits it will produce for a while. Make sure that you water the plant/base of the soil regularly and don't let it dry up. You can put leaf mulch around the base of the plant to keep moisture in the soil.

Can ya speed up the process by removing the seed instead of leaving it on a counter? Thanks!!
@wellnessandcountrylife
@wellnessandcountrylife 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I haven't tried removing the seeds to speed-up the sprouting process. My concern is it could dehydrate the seeds if you remove it from the fruit. The chayote flesh has water and nutrients that keep them hydrated and makes them continue to grow even if you got the not-so- mature chayote. So for me, removing the seed from the chayote fruit will not help speed-up the sprouting.

I tried sprouting my chayote, but the skin outside kept rotting and making a hole. I tried to cut way the seed from the rotting part like you did when I saw the sprout trying to come up. i cut a wide and deep V shape into the fruit and pulled the seed part out, i didn't even knick the seed, but after I put it in water and then put it in seed starting soil, it just stopped growing and continued to rot like the rest of the fruit. I sprayed hyrogen peroxide on the surface to prevent new rotting and the other 3 fruit i have left have not rotted with the Hydrogen peroxide spray so I may have a chance to grow another. but I dont' know why it stopped growing instead of growing like yours did. I don't understand how to get this to sprout without rotting. Should I try to sprout it under a UV lamp to kill mold or fungus on it?? I tried planting a whole fruit but it rotted also. I feel like I'm wasting so much money trying to start a plant. They cost $2.50 a pound and I've lost 3 large sized fruit to rotting before they ever sprouted. Should I use a heat mat to increase the ambient temperature to summer time? Should I put them under a bright lamp to simulate sunshine? This is the first time my store has carried this fruit and i don't know if they ever will again so I want to grow a supply of my own, but I am so frustrated.

I am in Zone 8a btw, and we are already experiencing freezing temps. I have been trying to start the plants indoors where the temperature is warmer, but maybe it is not warm enough?
@wellnessandcountrylife
@wellnessandcountrylife 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, rotting can happen when the chayote is too young to sprout and it get moisture in the cleavage where sprout grow. Let it mature naturally near a window, don't water it because water will cause it mold and rot. When sprout or vine is long and leaves are developed is when you can plant. No need to buy stuff to help it grow. Zone 8 is warm enough for chayote to thrive. It does die in freezing cold. Protect the base with mulch during winter. If roots are protected chayote can grow back in spring.
@Metqa
@Metqa 5 ай бұрын
@@wellnessandcountrylife Thank you for your reply. Sorry I didn't respond sooner. You were correct in letting the plant mature and sprout on it's own. I got a plant that sprouted really strong. it grew well but it did not survive transplanting. But now that I leave them to sprout on their own, I keep getting strong sprouts so I will try again. Unfortunately since my stores don't carry the fruit all year, I have to wait till autumn to get the fruit and so I now can try to actually overwinter the new sprouts. It's only August and not enough time for them to grown outside, so I am re-watching your video so I can let them grow till next spring! ETA: I found by accident that if using a sharp knive I split the chayote along the crack, and just cut all the way around to the other side crack, that the sprout grows out, the fruit splits right along the seed pocket and I can pop it out to plant. I don't have to cut a wedge of fruit out with it. I wish I could attach photos, It's so cool how easy it pops open like a clam!

How long is the vine? If it's not getting enough sunlight it won't produce lbig and lots of leaves.

@@wellnessandcountrylifeThank you so much for getting back to me it's probably more than half a meter, it's got about 5 vines coming off the main one... I have it inside as it started to grow among the vegetables. I will put it outside in the garden,

@MayMay-wk3so Place it near the shaded area first to make it adjust to the outside temperature, otherwise it will get shocked by the heat of the sun.

E Marie’s , can you share (sale)one or two chayotes to me? Because in my area (Utah) only sale smooth without prick from Mexico’s Chayotes. Those chayotes required all year hot. Only way can plant and get chayotes is big wrinkle ( rough) skin or have prick kind chayote can growing here. I have been try plant those Mexico kind chayotes for two years. That will be great if I can get 1-2 from you. I will have right chayotes to replant Once I plant and harvested chayotes from you. Can you help me buy 2 of right kind chayotes like you have at your local store and mail to me ( I will love to pay all your cost) if you can not share your’s. Please let me know if is possible ! Thanks!

HI! What kind do you like to plant, the spikey chayotes or the variety I have? What zone are you in? I am in zone 7A. Reason why I get chayote harvest is because I have 2 return chayotes, they grow-back in spring, they are covered with thick leaf mulch to protect the roots. I alsp have chayotes already growing indoor ready to transplant in my garden come springtime. I don't have chayote seeds right now, they all sprouted and growing. If I see mature chayotes in the store I can buy them for you..what kind do you want, the spikey or the smooth kind?

@@wellnessandcountrylife thanks very much and let me know it. I don’t any different ( spikey or smooth) , but I think the spikey should be good ( because in Utah only sale smooth kind from Mexico) . I been told rough skin or have prick on the all of surface ( not too many) kinds can grown in Utah. I am in zone 6A - 7 . Let me know how I can send money to you? Thanks very much!

Not necessarily. Some people even plant it upside-down. Once the roots and vines are established they cut off the chayote squash
