Cheap Acton Camera - is it any good? Akaso Brave 7 review

I don't normally review tech, but was offered this to try and thought it might be an option for people who wanted to record their adventures without paying GoPro or DJI prices. I have not kept the camera.

Thanks for this - I was actively planning to buy the Akaso as I'm more of a casual sort of user of action cameras and thus don't want to spend more than I need on something which will only be used infrequently, but the quality - no comparison really, so I'll just have to spring for the GoPro.

I just bought a new Brave 7 and some of the niggling problems were solved with the new firmware, like image stabilization turning off, etc. The reason I got it is if I crash. I'd rather crash with a $200 CAD camera than a $600+ CAD camera. It does good enough for what I'm using it for which is some light action and mainly You tube type of stuff. I think for an average person that would like to shoot their holidays or maybe tooling around the neighborhood or any other pedestrian type of stuff it's a good option.

Just like the Gopro when you change the setting for the front viewer you can get a full view, also like the gopro to get the image that you like with the colors that you like you have to fool with the settings.

Great review.. at the time of me watching the akaso 7 is £118 and the GoPro Hero 10 is £349... you can't realistically compare.

I have had two Go Pros and both lasted just out of the warrantee. Go Pro won't entertain getting it repaired. No Damaged just stopped working. They offered me 5% off a new camera.

That’s not good! If you had GoPro plus they’d replace them at discount. I have never had a GoPro fail (and I’ve had most numbers) without me doing something crazy to cause it - I wonder if I was lucky or you were unlucky?

I got one of these Akaso from Amazon (I think it was this model) and I personally decided to return it. Even though I don't intend to use it professionally, I still was thoroughly disappointed with the lack of quality. I bought a used GoPro Hero 7 instead. I bought it for 150 €, which is almost double what I paid for the Akaso, but I'm very happy with it.

the brave 7 filter lens is removable but i haven't found a polarized filter to fit it. It would be a lot better in direct sun if you could polarize it at the lens. Its digital polarizing is meh.

Stabilization is the absolute for me (mountain biking), none of the low cost action cameras can touch GoPro, Osmo Acton or Insta 360.

very good video . i was on the verge of purchasing the Akaso . But after seeing your video i will give this a big miss. i was not impressed with the colour ,no video front and rear , no wide angle. so very poor all around really. keep up the great videos . Gerald south wales uk

I checked with Akaso about the price they wanted displayed in the video (as it will be live for a long time) and they wanted £161 so perhaps it’s a temporary reduction?

When this camera is in the Waterproof case, does it make a knocking noise only heard on the video when replayed? I have the Akaso Brave 4 and it moves around in the case and makes a loud almost constant knocking noise only heard when video is watched.

I am still using my trusty GoPro 4 apart from all the fancy extra options i see no reason to change as it records excellent videos for my motorcycle touring

The four was fantastic, and I kept mine all the way through the 6,7, 8 and 9. A great size and I had loads of accessories for it. Now the difference in video quality between and and the 10 and 11 is noticeable side by side. The new ones are significantly bigger and if on your helmet your 4 is still probably the best option unless you get the new wee one.

i found akaso 8 for cheaper price than brave 7 it has not arrived yet but ost reviews say the 8 is too expensive and not as good as go pro the 8 was $126 vs brave 7 $130 a lot of reviews says brave 7 stopped working when in water but its meant to be waterproof

How did you manage to get a clear audio out from akaso? Akasos are terrible in audio quality

I think I explain that, sorry if not clear. I show how bad the audio is and explained it was wild track recorded on a separate recorder then syncd in the edit. I do a lot of audio that was for quality.

They look a bit muddy to me. They’re not ‘flat’ in the sense that they’re ready for a LUT or correction. I’ve tried and I can’t pull better images out of what’s there.

I can only compare this with the gopro black i had i use them on trackdays the first gopro black 10 failed to work after just a few hours on track sent it back to which they fo send another which did not even turn on as i think was same one i sent back. But this cheep camra was just keep going and going and fine the video quality more then good enough for everyday use

No I haven’t. Doing a camera review was a departure for me and not something I’ll repeat because there are so many people doing that very well.

The simple truth is you get what you pay for. I tried a cheap 4K camera and it performs exactly like the one you tested. Washed out colours and awful stabilisation. My phone is a much better video camera, but I guess that’s actually a £700 camera itself.

No comparison. Akaso Brave 7 sucks. I bought one, fuzz and grain is terrible. Got a replacement unit, just as terrible of a fuzz and grain. I only bothered with Akaso because my GoPro Hero 7 display was destroyed due to car(s), yes more than one, running over it. Guess what? That ran over GoPro 7 still records better than the Akaso. Not worth the hassle. Audio is a joke. Colors fidelity is a joke. Akaso is a joke. Image stabilization is unstable. Maybe I got some bad units? Well, there are hardly any Brave 7 for sale anywhere. But plenty of Brave 7 LE. That alone is a red flag.

Dont use image stabilisation -> it crops the picture to do electronic stabilisation, then upscales result to 4K -> dreadful quality outcome.

Akaso sent me the camera to try, saw the video before it went live and I asked - "am I doing something wrong?" Apparently that's how it looks. I tried tweaking in post, and you can see some improvement to wards the end, but only when there's a lot more light.

It was unclear to me when not indicated, which segments were which camera. When you label the lighting conditions, is that the Akaso?

In the test, all the comparative GoPro/Akaso shots are indicated except for when I run through the filters unique to the Akaso, because they are... unique to the Akaso. If the Akaso is in shot or when I'm explaining what I'm doing, then it's one of my usual vlogging cameras. I hope that clears it up.
