Engine forensics is what you can expect from this video. We discover something really unpleasant about this tortured engine in the Alpina B7. It escalates quickly and ends up in 15 million pieces. Can it be fixed though?

Oh it's a shame that you have removed the pistons. I rebuild m62 engines. They suffer from the same issue. Too much carbon build up on pistons and top of the liners causes the scratching because it basically makes the tolerance much too tight The crank looks good on the video, find a tutorial on how to polish a crankshafts. Most of the professional garages do this by hand! Seriously. It's faster and gives amazing results. You don't need it to be done by professional. Also scratches like this would not cause any problems in long term. I would expect another 300,000km if it wasn't touched. Just polish it yourself. Did you measure the compression?

If that was the case, why would there be scratches on the main and piston bearings? It would appear that foreign particles made it inside from poor maintenance habit. Are these engines the ones that BMW recommended 15K miles oil change intervals? Roughly 2~3X what it should really be? That's been proven to be absolute nonsense, and would be ok for a mid performance 4 cylinder. But a supercharged V8? Carbon build up isn't hard enough to cause that kind of damage. Carbon breaks down into micro particles under mechanical pressure that are then filtered through the oil system. The compression data on this engine is addressed on the video.

Thats what I did with a 320d I bought a while ago that then revealed a knock when I warmed it up the first time. It had good compression, burned no oil, never failed emissions test, ran like new. It died 6 years later when I blew the turbo, stupid beginner mistake. So I opened the engine and the knock turned out to be piston slap from a dented piston and scratched cylinder, probably due to a tuning chip some pre-owner had installed years ago. The knock was annoying but Im pretty sure that thing would still run perfectly fine had I not killed the turbo.

Sreten, consider sending those parts to Poland, their work is excellent and considering you could ship all these parts at once, you can save a lot of money, Germany is known of really high repair costs just for the work being done. I recomend you to contact with top-mar and at least ask them for the price.
@maikbohner94

I wouldn't do that if I got no experience in the work of that polish guy. This type of work needs to be very precise. Of course there are people in Poland who knows what they are doing but many only do cheap repairs.

The task you are addressing is huge. All respect to you. This also brings up the issue of how did we get to that level of complications in engineering design. isn't there an easier way? I find it an absolute waste and blasphemy to scrap such a beautiful piece of art just because its cheaper to scrap it than repair a part of it.

When it comes to project cars, something I always try to keep in mind: "if it was easy, everybody would do it." _Everybody_ wants a cool, fast, unique, special car, but most people still drive boring beige econoboxes, because it's not _easy_ to create, operate, and/or maintain a legitimately cool, fast, unique, special car.

This video definitely hurt to watch :( you can hear the disappointment in Sreten’s voice throughout the whole disassembly process. Despite that, it’s so awesome to see this level of repair being done and I’m so excited to see this car at the end of its restoration when it’s as good (or better) than new! Thank you so much for the awesome work you do saving these cars Sreten!

Streten, you the man!!!! Awesome video!!! I’m so excited for you to rebuild this engine!!! Here in the US there is a big class action suit bagáis to B62 engines, but I am afraid that it may exclude Alpinas. I’ll research that for you. Also you would think that Alpina getting involved with you and this great channel of yours would be a hit. Maybe starting a formal letter with signatures from all of your followers might be enough for them to change their mind. Especially knowing that some of us have pending new orders for a 2022/23 Alpina B7 here in the states. I don’t know how to do the letter with signatures but maybe someone else does. Good luck!

Also Sreten: tears apart half the car and in his “spare time” checks the cylinders. Realized one has a problem.
