Cheap and Easy 40k Terrain for Beginners

The channel is pretty much a hobby to me that I fit around work so I don't post as regularly as some others who do it full time, so growth is a little slower I guess. Always the way. There are many things I get rid of and then curse myself for not saving it. But you can't save everything, I already have 3 big boxes of random bits of junk I'm "saving".

A tip for the posters - if you want them to appeard brown and old, make yourself some tea and use the teabag to tap the paper sheet with the posters, then let it dry and then cut them out and glue them. It will create an aged effect really fast and cheap. It's something I used to do when I was attending elementary arts school when I was little.

Funnily enough I did the same at school. I was worried the moisture would make the ink from the printer run and smear the image. Maybe if is stained the paper first, let it dry and then printed on the stained paper? Something I can play around with in the future. Thanks for watching

For the posters I've found using glue sticks works well, it allows me to control how much glue on the back, create wrinkles (rolling them up in to a ball, then flattening them out with my hand before dragging across the glue stick head) for hasty application or folds/dogeared corners to give it that warn look.

I know this is a late comment, but as a safety warning to both you and anyone watching, make sure that if you melt the polystyrene, you do so in a well-ventilated area and consider using some kind of breathing protection. Melting releases styrene gas, which is toxic to the nervous system. A little probably won’t kill you, but it can cause some dizziness and long-term exposure could lead to serious respiratory problems. Great video otherwise! It’s definitely inspiring and has me hunting around my house for old styrofoam packaging.

Tip. If you use mod podge instead of pva when sealing you dont have to worry about primer eating the styrofoam.

@@creativecuts7803 If I admit that you take me back to my Blue Peter watching days … only this is a infinitely less crap ;). And you make it seem so doable…! I think what sets apart the better/more useful of these (dare I call them) art project videos is the exposure of the thought process, and the periodic re-evaluations that yield convergence. So thanks for doing that. I particularly like the camera shots from different angles that you've dropped in here and there-it makes me realise all of a sudden that perhaps I should be dangling my phone camera into the diorama now and then to see what the people in the world would be seeing…!

I too grew up on a diet of Blue Peter and Art attack, I got into 40k when I was about 10 or so and then life and university kicked in and I didnt really get back into it until about 4 years ago and really only started building stuff and filming it towards the end of lockdown. I genuinely love it as there is a real sense of discovery for me too. I tend to build more instinctively rather than heavily plan, sometimes to my own detriment but I have also learned to embrace the constant experimentation. To adapt and overcome problems as they arise is all part of the fun. Thanks for watching and getting involved!

This is incredible stuff! I wonder a third of the way in what in the hell you're getting at, and two-thirds in I realize how amazing it is turning out! Spectacular plasma glow at the end as well. How do you do that?

Cheers dude, pretty much my journey with every build haha. I too sometimes have no idea what I'm building until thing click together. The glow for the plasma is vallejo fluro yellow over white built up in thin layers. I am by no means a great painter but let me know if you want me to do a quick tutorial on it

Haha fair point. You could achieve similar results with a knife or even a heated knife but please take care because obviously knifes are sharp. But even a cheap hot wire cutter is a great investment for any novice builder. I would highly recommend as it opens up a whole world of possibilities. Thanks for watching
