Thanks for the cool video Brian. Wood deteriorates pretty quickly in my garden so I used electrical conduit that I slipped over 1/2” x 4’ rebar that I drove in on 8’ centers. The horizontal beam is the same conduit where I pre-drilled holes on 1’ centers and used 1/4” threaded eye bolts secured with a nut on top. Not as visually appealing as wood but it gets the job done! No digging needed and it’s really solid.

Were you using ground contact pressure treated lumber? If you’re using something like untreated yellow pine, it’s going to rot super fast, but the pressure treated stuff should be good for several years. That said, I like your Uber-industrial strength solution. Being in a suburban environment, I suspect my neighbors would not.

Thank you for the inspiration. I modified the design to suit our situation, while following the concept. Today I put a second set of clips on all of the tomatoes and saw the first few fruits that have set (San Marzano for the win, second year running). I used cup hooks (open) instead of eye hooks (closed) for ease of re-hooking the tomato hooks. Nice to see Noah making an appearance and helping out.

My husband built the trellis last week. I tweaked your design by having him install the upper bars at a 45 degree angle so that the front row of tomatoes will not shade the back row. Looking forward to a great harvest this year! Now if only the nights could warm up (still around 40F) so that I can actually plant the tomatoes in the garden!

I’m doing this type of trellis this year. After 12 years of gardening, I think it will be my favorite way so far of trellising. However, with wood prices being what they are, our projects were not cheap.
@nic.h Жыл бұрын
Try Y-Posts and a suitable length of fairly solid bamboo. Just drive the posts in, lash the bamboo along the top solidly and run appropriate strength twine up from each plant. Don't place the posts right at the ends, moving them in a plant or two reduces the flex in the middle. I don't even use hooks, just take the twine, attach with a loose loop to base of tomato stem, wind in up to the top of the plant, then up to the bamboo, loop it around a few times, then take it back down itself and tie off with an Clove Hitch or one of its slightly stronger variants. Nice and easy to adjust tension needed, by just moving the hitch and adjusting the slack around the loops on the bamboo.

Not sure what I enjoyed the most. The trellis building or Noah being so animated. He definitely is not camera shy. Question. Would this same idea work if posts were attached to a 10” deep raised bed?
