It’s because mindless people with a lot of cash buy them...same goes for eBay. I go to flea markets and see things that are just junk going for insane prices, I ask the seller about it and the basic reply I usually get is, “ that’s what they go for on ebay!” Thats when I say, thanks and walk away...
@hdrjunkie4 жыл бұрын
...also, see the prices of old used axes now, climbing higher and higher every day. You can still find cheap ones but I have even started seeing more and more hatchets going for $20.00 up to $40.00 each!
@hebson214 жыл бұрын
@@hdrjunkie i was just at a flea market yesterday and saw all kinds of old beat to piss hatchets with chiped blades and broken handles for $60 to $150. Maybe they were trying to sell them as decor, no idea...

Clicked on this thinking you found some warehouse hoard, then was like Holy Cow! that's where I buy my coal!...about 20mins from me. When I was getting started he spent like an hour explaining things, giving tips and invited me to their Tuesday night hammer in and all I was buying (that day) was one pair of tongs to get started. Second time I was there I met a full time blacksmith that's been helping me out pretty much weekly every since. AWESOME shop, AWESOME folks! That's Texas Hospitality! Thanks for featuring this!

I ran into this shop about 17-18 yrs ago one time comming back from the Range... I bought a set of tongs and some coal in a pile outside that I paid for by the pound.. shoveled it into a bucket I had in the back of my truck and got started... I haven't been back in several years as I ended up moving to Dallas and in an apt... I'm back out on a small patch of land and going to set up once again... started looking at vids on anvils and so glade I clicked on this one... 😎

Wow! I've been away from the anvil market for 20 years or so, and it's crazy what's happened to the prices. My most recent anvil purchases have been 55-lb HF anvils -- for use by beginners. Face so soft you can cut it with a file -- but good enough to teach beginners on. Meanwhile beginners should remember that you don't need an anvil - you need something to USE as an anvil. Get a few heavy (50-lb +) chunks of steel and hammer away on those. Forklift tines are highly rated, but there are lots of other choices. Tool steel will last longer and not ding up so badly, but a heavy hunk of mild steel may work for you too. And with the latter, you could always SuperQuench it -- but make sure you have LOTS of SuperQuench for a large chunk of steel. Professionals should invest in high-quality tools. Amateurs should start with cheap stuff and learn something about the craft before spending much money on tools.

5$+ a pound is not cheap, even for brand new anvils. As a matter of fact, it's a mid-range price of every other new anvil. Craigslist has a plethora of nearly pristine anvils ranging from 3-4$ a pound. Don't rush a big purchase like this and wait for a good anvil to show itself on Craigslist or Facebook. With Facebook, though, there are almost exclusively bots running fake ads or scammers wanting you to wire them money before they ship it.

My latest anvil was 125 euro for a 110kg churchwindow anvil. Sure, it's beat up and needs some serious TLC. However it comes out at $0.58/lb and I bought it 3 weeks ago. Biggest difference is that I bought the anvil in a country which does not air forged in fire :D It was just an honest trader trying to make a buck and he sells about 100+ anvils a year from 30lbs to 1000+lbs

I checked the link in the description. Lotsa stuff in there. Definately worth a good look. Only issue I have is the descriptions on the products aren't very in depth, bare minimum. For example the anvils only have the dimensions. No info on the brand, wither or not it is cast steel or drop forged steel, or the hardness, or the size of the hardy and pritchel hole etc. Makes me very wary on ordering from them.

I have been saving for a new anvil. Either from these guys or Holland Anvil. The price for old anvils almost exactly matches brand new ones, maybe shy 100 dollars a so. Which is ridiculous. Unless I find a smokin deal on a decent old anvil, there is almost no point.

The Texas Farrier Supply anvils are undoubtedly the best bang for the buck you can get in an anvil. They are cast in a foundry in Texas, are 52-54 Rockwell hardness and have an excellent rebound.
