Yes, I know my hands are large/fat. It's because of a heart condition I suffer from called Congestive Heart Failure. Here's a link to some information about CHF: cle.clinic/2TdS2Ux
One of the symptoms is that is causes fluid retention, mostly in the hands, feet/ankles, and face.
It will kill me one day. I'm doing ok right now, but someday...

There will always be "for another $100$", no matter how high-end or expensive product one gets. Like you showed us, this $250 scope is decent and meets basic requirements, especially for beginners. It's important to understand what extra $100 (or what ever amount) brings to the table and is it worth for the buyer. For many, this scope is everything they need and more. Great video, thanks for sharing.

I agree, there is always a little more for a few bucks, in the end there will be a high end product that not feautures are needed for. my recomendation is stay for needed spesifikation, perhaps keep going for a little more to grow in to, but don't start ladder it's that more for only that and keep klimbing lader. It's always better to look at what do I need now, near future needs and invest accoringly. In total agrement with you mr Hugatry. Don't spend more than you need. Best regards from sweden

Just picked one up too and then found your video. It's amazing what these DSOs can do for such low price and I'm coming from a fairly decent (in its days) automotive DSO after deciding to get another one for electronics use. The AutoSet button, Measure and Math functions right at the fingertips at this price point is cool!

Nice basic scope. I’m glad you keep on reviewing the cheap stuff it gives me ideas on what to get next. I’m not impressed with the Velleman test board seems like it might need new diodes and a new cap. If you get it working please let us know what it took to fix it. It does give me an idea for a scope testing board of my own design though. Great video as always Paul.

I've had this model scope for about 2 years now. Not bad is a fair assessment. It has its problems though. It occasionally "randomly" reboots itself. The AC / DC input coupling stopped working on one occasion. It fixed itself after a reboot. The triggering malfunctioned but it also fixed itself after a reset using the autoset button. One of the backlight buttons stopped "backlighting" after a week and one of the probes had to be replaced due to a faulty connection. So for the extra $100 I wish I had bought the Rigol. I can't justify another $350 on top of the $250 I paid for this scope so I am stuck with this one. There are a couple of other reviews on this model of scope and I would suggest that anyone thinking of buying this scope watch them. My evaluation after 2 years is at best not bad.

Sounds like you need to do a firmware update for those software issues. The probe and button would have been covered under warranty so just the annoyance of sending it back to get fixed. The seller I ordered mine from sent me the wrong scope but I had ordered the 4102C and got the MSO5202D which costs over 250 more. Downside is no signal gen which is why I ordered the 4000C but the upside is I got a much faster scope and ordered a fy6900 for 104 euros with my scope savings.

@@excitedbox5705 You got lucky on that deal. The cost to send my scope back to China for warranty service would have exceeded the cost of the scope.

I risked it successfully but be aware you could brick your scope. Paul I just signed up for your channel. Great content. You and I almost have similar biography's, right down to health stuff. Yeah... I looked at this scope before I bought my Rigol. That maximum record length of 40K was a deal killer; if you were sampling a 40 Khz signal, you'd fill the buffer in one second. And at the maximum sample rate of 1 gigasample per second, you'd fill the buffer in 0.00004 seconds, which kinda makes it a useless feature. The Rigol gave me the same 100Mhz rate (once the Riglol pirate update was applied), 2 additional channels, and a much more usable memory size. It was worth the extra $$ to me, and given the popularity of the Rigol, I think many people feel the same way. On the other hand... if you just need a super cheap scope for a particular need, the Hantek isn't a bad choice. Scopes are getting cheap enough now that you can eaily pay more for a multimeter, and when you compare the capability of the Hantek to some of the ritzy DMMs out there, the Hantek comes off looking pretty good. Still, I could barely afford 1 scope; and for my needs, at the time I bought it, the Rigol was the best choice. Keep rocking! >Charlie

Thank you for doing a review that doesn't bash "one hung low" suppliers for the perceived quality of the capacitors. Honestly, its Hantek and Rigol that have been leading the way and making quality test and measurement kit available at a lot lower (with understandable compromises in quality of course). And I also really appreciate that you mentioned the "another $100" syndrome. It affects all gear, from cars to guitars. Yes for another $100 you can guild the Lilly. It's not just the price .. Well, it's a big factor, but for many of us, 500$ scope then needs to be shipped , and then there is VAT , so it might be closer to 650$ when one gets it .. I plan on buying a Hantek scope, like a 200$ one, and the reasons are that im a noob, dont need a very powerfull scope cause i have never even used one, and also, I dont wanna make some noob mistake and maybe damage a 500-1000$ scope.. I would much rater spend 200$ , get a cheap scope to practice and learn, then if there will be cases where i need a better one, then i will consider getting a better one

I have that same scope. The scope check board is a home copy of the Velleman board, but it works just the same. That was nasty looking waveforms as was mine, but I let the scope perform its on self check calibration and it cleaned it up. Still had that annoying ring on the top left side, but it's a $250 scope, lol. It's not an SC61 but still a nice little scope none the less. It's also upgradeable, but I wouldn't touch it unless I had the 50 MHz scope board to compare it to. I still think it's more to it than a simple firmware thing. I don't trust the you tube DIY upgrade videos. There has to be a small hardware diff. Thanks for the video, it was great. Lol.....UR not far from being the scope KING....:-)

Seems decent enough. I would just like to say, it felt a bit uncomfortable watching you fault finding your scope test board, I think it would have been better if you would have done a bit work off screen before recording to get yourself orientated. I understand you wanted us to see it switched on as it came out the box but a little bit of off screen work (in my humble opinion) would have looked better. I could not agree with you more.. I just took delivery, (May 2020), on a Hantek DSO5072P and I paid Amazon $215 including free delivery. I'm just getting back into the hobby after several decades of just not having the time. I agree with the critics on one thing, it's not a professional, laboratory quality scope. But the truth is, most of us are not professional, laboratory quality either. From my prospective, after being away for awhile, this little $215 dollar scope offers features that would have been hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, out of the reach of the average hobbyist. Twenty five years ago, if I had wanted an oscilloscope, (And I did), it would have been war surplus or from some other old used source, without any of the features I'm enjoying on this cheap import. The fact is, I have learned so much from your videos demonstrating the inexpensive scopes that it gave me the confidence to dive in and buy one. I enjoy working on vintage valve and transistor radios. Now, for a small investment, I have a great addition to my bench and I can do all the things I need to do without spending $1k or more to do it. Thanks for all the knowledge you share with us and I'm looking forward to your next oscilloscope lessons. Tim.

I bought this scope to use in my stereo system to measure channel outputs in my phono cartridge. I am measuring for crosstalk levels between the channels. I don't know if there are any audio users out there, but I have a specific question I am hoping someone can help me with. How do I customize the measurement selections in the Measure menu, specifically to turn off the measurements I don't need. Actually, all I want to see is Peak to Peak in each channel, but I can't seem to turn off a bunch of others in Channel 1. Anyone able to help me. Much appreciated if you can.

question...I have one of these and learning how to use it. I noticed on mine that the measurement values (P-P, RMS-cycle, etc) change significantly depending on what Volts/Division setting I'm in. For instance for a 5V sine wave input, at the 1V/div, I see a 5.24 P-P and for a 2V/Div, I see a 5.36V P-P. Do I have a faulty scope or is this normal? Am I missing something. Using the cursers it seems closer to 5V P-P

@@learnelectronicsyes, I have had it set for x10. i noticed more stable values at the higher frequencies - the lower ones are more unstable. I was measuring 60Hz. I noticed the little frequency display never even would measure anything in the decimal places below 100 Hz. At higher frequencies it would. Are the measurement values obtained differently from the little frequency display vs the measurement panel?

These new Chinese oscilloscopes are space-age in comparison to The beginner's level Eico Heathkit RCA xcetera from the 1940s and 50s and if you do the inflation conversion calculator you paid more for them too. How far we've come. Even if there is a field modification necessary with the old Scopes you whipped out the soldering iron in the diagonal cutters and started rewiring. With the current generation of scopes a simple software update usually fixes the problem. Granted most times you cannot repair one of the new scopes. The value added by the modern technology makes them much more worthwhile and besides by the time it usually breaks you're ready for another two or three hundred dollars scope that has become more feature laden with a higher bandwidth. there are times I still like working with an analog scope for a couple of specific reasons but for the most part I've gone digital.

Speaking of rectifying, I been tinkering with a automotive battery charger, that I can also use as a bench power supply, I didn't see a full bridge, and it had a small ceramic cap, that looked to be an after thought, I'm guessing it's a single diode? But without the cap, it showed 11.?? Volts DC, and 25vAC, I put another cap o. The output, it then showed 18.?? Volts DC! I didn't bother checking ac, do you have any idea what this thing could be up to? I have a full bridge rectifier to swap in, I will need a smoother output if it's to be used as a bench supply also. I also have a digital volt and amp meter! Off subject I know, I figured I need to ask my KZbin electronic guru! Thanks!!

Some things to note about FNIRSI 1014D: 1) Super cheap, low pow power 5V 2A plug pack powered! 2) max sensitivity is 50mV (A BIT CRAPPY) 3) Has a nice "smoothed" display (lke the Rigol and other higher end scopes) 4) Can capture waveform on CH1/@ into the ARB generator ...NICE! 5) 250k capture RAM, 1G storage flash. 6) Much faster to use due to simplicity of controls ...something I have always hated about today's digital scopes! 5) Super cheap, ...blah blahh! :):)
