Fast and Cheap way to decrimp brass with a Harbor Freight Drill and 5/8" Countersink bit - ***For any naysayers about this method, I've never had a problem with a round that has been prepped this way, never had a primer pop out in the AR and because I'm not touching the side walls of the primer pocket like with other tools I'm leaving plenty of material to grab on to the new primer. I've shot probably 800 rounds through my AR that have been prepped this way.

Heads up - Don;t take my word on this, Do not use power tools while wearing gloves, the skin will heal / grow back but if you snag the glove your in for the ride of your life and a trip to the orthopedic surgeon to try and save the nerves.

As a machinist and trainer, I've pulled more than my fair share of people out of drill presses from wearing rubber gloves.

Dude, you're removing way too much brass from that primer pocket! Just get a Hornady primer pocket reamer and chuck it into your drill bit. It will remove the military crimp AND ream and uniform the primer pocket at the same time.

Have to disagree with you. I've loaded thousands of rounds that have been processed this way and have had no primer pop outs. I honestly don't understand why I would touch the inside of the primer pocket with a reamer tool.

@@jermpexton1 with a deep chamfer like that, you are reducing the inside surface area of the pocket diminishing its grip on the primer

@John Beige not to be critical but doing it for years doesn't mean one is doing it right. The proper tools only costs fifteen dollars and gives the precise result.

@@jermpexton1 If you are loading any ammo up to anything more soft plinker loads, those primers will flow into the space you've provided and really screw up your interpretation of pressure signs.

I have used the same method for years on my RCBS case prep center. Works just like you stated. I never had a primer fall out either. I’m gonna have to try your setup. Looks 10x faster then mine. Thanks for sharing!!

Oh my God! I've been looking for a cheap way of swaging the primer pockets on my used 5.56 cases. Thank you so much. I did not want to spend almost $169.00 plus shipping.

brass flows forward on firing from base to shoulder reason for primer pockets getting lose ironing the pocket by swaging keeps the brass intact cutting away material gains less primer pocket life

How do you tell when the crimp is completely out of the primer pocket ? I just started prepping my 223 yesterday but have been reading alot of info for the past 2 months but haven't found much info in my books .

you basically have to visually check to see the crimp ring is gone. It's pretty obvious. the crimp only pushes a little material into the top of the primer pocket cup so you don't have to hold the brass very long against the countersink bit. You'll get the feel of "pressure + time" against your drill pretty quick.

Try the Lyman VLD inside chamfer tool. It unscrews from the handle so you can chuck it in a drill. The angle is 22 deg so it's so it doesn't take so much of the case when cutting and the tip bottoms out in the primer pocket giving you the same cut on every case every time, plus it breaks up any crud in the bottom of the pocket. And the best part is it's only $11 bucks on amazon! I cut the crimp and chamfer the neck while the case is in hand. Works great for me, super fast with professional results. www.amazon.com/Lyman-VLD-Inside-Chamfer-Tool/dp/B001OPNR7I
