Small repairs and replacing any worn out parts can be done with simple tools and these light weight bikes can be stored easily in a cupboard or under a bed.

Well said, Andy! Some of these geeky Lycra shorts characters with their low- dropped handlebars, toe clips, racing shoes and stuff keep touting their high tech, ultra- pricey boutique bikes and suggest esoteric high- quid parts. They don't get it. We're hobocyclists , we aren't into that stuff. We're in it for the adventure and enjoy doing it on a shoe string budget, making use of easily available parts off the shelf, parts scavenged from other bikes, adjusting and fixing the bikes ourselves. We ride our bikes hard in our travels, not afraid of a few dings, scratches or rain. Expensive trophy bikes hauled around on the rear of a car don't get it for what we hobocyclists do. Just saying.

Hi I am a road cyclist who does wear Lycra and have the shoes and pedals and I have an mtb but I always buy second hand bikes as you mentioned in this video it's cheaper and I don't buy high end I am thinking about getting my third bike being a folding bike and chill wearing trainers and normal clothes for commuting and going to the shop I'm not all about speed anymore. I really love your channel as you are real and relatable and not just showing all the top upgrades. Keep up the good work.

I've only seen one second hand folding bike under $100 and I did buy that one. My next folded was and ebike to help rehab my knee at $799. I'd buy another second hand fold for less than $100 if I saw one. You are so right that it is not about having a fancy bike, it's about a servicable bike on a great ride.

You're back! I have been missing your videos... To keep the video theme, my folding bike was bought second hand. Fun fact, the same bike that I have appeared in one of your London videos at 59 seconds, here is the link to it kzbin.info/www/bejne/iF6knZSLjKqCb5o. Is the blue Decathlon Tilt 500 bike of the guy with a green and blue backpack. By the way, I don't want to mislead you, I live in Portugal near Lisbon, not London. I hope one day you can travel through Portugal besides central Europe. Until then, all the best to you and Mel.

Glad to see you back! This is definitely a great video, as always. I'm not much of a handyman so, I needed to start with something that I knew was in good condition--but glad that I didn't go with something outside of a comfort zone in terms of cost. I do eventually want to get the confidence to make some minor upgrades in the future, to maybe even feeling confident enough to take apart my whole bike like you do to travel. Haha. For now, I'll just keep paroozing your videos to learn and live vicariously through you. Thanks for the update!

Nice! Yeah a big plus for secondhand is that I feel like I can take the bike apart and change bits around, remove parts etc and not worry too much. Finding a secondhand bike in good condition is all part of the gamble i guess, and plenty of times i've taken a closer look after purchasing and found a bent wheel or other problems that I have to fix! Keeping it rolling is the name of the game :)

I agree with everything you said. There is a lot of worry when you have a new expensive bicycle. Most of my worry is about theft, not scratches. I do have a folding bicycle that I bought for $100.00, I have modified it to make it comfortable to ride but still prefer my Big Dummy. I'm 6'4" tall and weight 210lbs, my folding bicycle is just not as comfortable to ride as my full size bicycle. I would love to know more about how you came to live the lifestyle that you and Mel live. I think people could really benefit from your lifestyle. I believe it could change people's lives for the better and they would be happier. If you care to share that information. Wishing you and Mel the best in this new year. ✌️

Yes agree about the theft aspect, i have regularly spent 2x the price of the bikes ive owned on a good quality lock and so far not had any bike thefts. Good feedback on the content youd like to see, plan is to develop a long form information rich series of videos to cover many aspects of living this way and finances including cost of cycle tours, etc. Ive really got to get cracking on the development and video production on this channel but im still using an old iphone to film & edit. hope to get a laptop soon!

This video speaks to me. The only reason I have a folding bike is because I was because I bought it used ($30!!!). Folding bikes were always something that interested me but I didn't have a strict need for them, and my dad (who knows more about the mechanical part of bikes than me) was always dubious about them. Me and my dad definitely had to fix the bike up, but it works great now!

I love this topic. I prefer to buy secondhand bikes myself, there's just less guilt in throwing them around trails or floodwaters knowing that the upgrades are going to be as cowboy as I want it. I bought a used 20 inch folding bike back in 2017 from a shop that imported used Japanese goods. The plan was to commute with it to office which was around 22km from my home, but the bike was just like my motorcycle when I first got it: a rat bike, in need of serious upgrades. To tide me over until I got the restoration going, I bought a new 16 inch folder from a proper bike shop. Yes, it was beautifully made, the only upgrades I did were new tires and brake pads as needed. But apart from the twice weekly office ride I never really connected with "16". For the price I paid for it, I was torn between getting my desired customizations in on one hand, and getting my money's worth on its parts on the other. Meanwhile, after five years of upgrades 20 has more miles to it and been to more places than 16. It still has a steel frame, but now has a new seat, seat pole, handlebars, mag wheels, solid tires, disc brakes, and a 50cc motor. As for 16, early last year I used it to bike to my girlfriend's home in a mountainous province 50km away. It's stayed there ever since although I plan to bring it back. Thank you for speaking to this. Looking at other cycling channels and motovlogs I get the feel that if they can't shill for an upgrade to Sponsored Product then they don't bother posting videos. It's not about the hobby or lifestyle anymore. Greetings from Philippines.

Looking at my £50 (UK here) decathlon tilt 120 it dates from about 2016 . I was interested to get something that was used and neglected, just to see how it was holding up. Needed the crank tightening, one cable, two sets of brake blocks. Could do with pedals, they are the original folding ones- I will see if I might just get non folding. It needs a back rack. As Andy says, you don't need high end. Just learn a bit about bike maintenance and you are good to go.

Sounds like with a littyle work the Tilt will be a great bike! Good idea swapping out the folding pedals for normal blocks, ive done that on all my bikes since folding pedals dont actually save much space anyway

I do have the same folder and got it for free. I replaced the back wheel and screwed a back rack for all the touring equipment on it. There are so many channels that just review the pros and cons of the latest tiny bit of cycling or camping equipment that it can lead to this intimidating culture where people think that’s the most important. I loved your video on ‘prioritising adventure’, whatever it was called. You set out a whole philosophy very eloquently in a handful of minutes. You reminded me of the story my dad told me about how he built a raft out of oil drums aged 18 and paddled it down the Rhine in Germany for a week or so until he had to bail out and swim for it because it went over a waterfall.
