Our Bromptons are over 10 years old. My wife and I ride our Bromptons recreationally and take them with us all over the world. I also ride with my road bike mates who can't believe I can easily keep up with them on our long rides. We are now on our third set of tyres. No rust. They would rate as one of the best investments we have EVER made. Although many of our friends reckon we look like "dorks on storks" we smile because we know they have no idea how much enjoyment these innovative bikes have provided us in our lives. We are 73 years old!!! Our Bromptons keep us young!!!

Longest ride I've done on a Brompton in a single day is 250km/155mi while supporting two of my super randonneur friends. Only necessary change i have made on both of mine (H6R / M2L) are front hydraulic disc brakes. I commuted 80km per day for 3yrs, putting over 30,000km on my first one, so it's not a problem doing those distances. It's both reliable and durable. Really has been a life changing bike.

When I turned 60, 3 years ago, a Brompton was by far my favorite gift. All my friends had chipped in and I really love it. Since then it has lived most of the time in the back of my EV, giving me a perfect way to get from wherever I have to park to where I'm actually going. I also use it to go shopping or to local meetings. When I bring it with me on public transport I just open up the soft shell Brompton bag and wrap that around the bike, optionally leaving the seat on the outside as a carry handle.

What a beautiful design. I didn't realise they were so thoughtfully put together. I love how it turned into a shopping trolley with the bag in the ready-to-receive position, and then back again so easily. They are very expensive in the UK, but that's partly because they are the only bike allowed on the tube (subway). Great review.

Any folding bike is allowed on the tube. Even 20 inch wheels. I know this because I own 2 20inch bikes and Brompton and I’ve been travelling with each of them on underground and trains even in rush hours. What makes Brompton expansive is the fact they are made in London and their parts are replaceable.
@peterdelmonte9832

They are more expensive for two reasons I reckon. First, they’re made in England and thus domestic pay levels apply to the workers. And second because they’re the best! I found reading the book about company was an eye opener. The original idea, the endless R&D, the company ethos…all of it enthusing. I’ve had mine for seven years now, it’s next to me now in Costa as I type this. It’s a beautiful thing!

I bought a loaded top-end model a few years back. Yes, it was cute, clever, nice looking and well-made, but the riding experience is definitely not anything like regular cycling--it's twitchy as hell, ergonomically weird, and less efficient. These aren't negatives, as long as you plan to use the thing in its proper role: easy, low-mileage, laid-back commuting, touring, twiddling around. It's great for that kind of riding. If you want a serious long-haul or high-performance machine, avoid it.
@SK-lt1so

The tires are more prone to flats than any bike I've ridden. And the small wheels are sensitive-I'm very careful to avoid coming down curbs more than 1-2" for fear of damaging the wheels.

It’s not going to ride them like a full size wheel and I have ridden in some challenging environments but this is essentially a commuter bike that can be put in a small boot and in the hold of a plane. I got my Brompton (C-Line 6 speed, ocean blue) last friday. It took me some time to get used to the folding process; I also wasn't aware of the fact that pulling the saddle tube all the way out will unlock the fold. But now I am already much more confident in my folding technique. What really surprised me so far is how fast I can go with this bike. You'd never believe that if you see this thing for the first time. But it's incredible comfortable to ride. The only big difference to a "normal" bike I have come across so far is that the handle bar is very narrow and it's dangerous to steer with only one hand, you really need both hands. I already took it into a bus, and kept it between my legs - incredible, such a tiny package. Update: in the meantime I had some more rides with it, I also took it from my hometown Luzern to Zürich (it's a 45 minutes train ride on a VERY crowded train). It was a sunny sunday and there already were bikes on board of the train. They have to use special bike lots where you need to hang the bike upside down, and the lots have to be booked in advance and are in great demand. With the brompton you just put it in front of you in the corridor. It's tight but it does work, even when all seats are occupied. And even it that wouldn't work you still could just stand and put it between your legs, that always works. Best would be to put it into one of the baggage lots, however putting it there naked felt dangerous as the delicate parts are put onto the ground. It think it would be best to use a protecting bag for this. Anyway, it was so great to be able to ride through Zürich with the brompton and after that, just fold it and board the train back - any train you like. While with a reservation you're bound to a specific time and the weather was unstable, so you could end up having to stay for hours in Zürich while it's raining and you have to park your regular bike somewhere outside... There really is something about the brompton that is magical. I always look forward to my next ride with it.

Excellent video! I have an orange ML6 and I’ve been a Brompton owner since 2014. It still get a ridiculously big smile on my face every time I ride my bike. The happiness it brings me is enough to consider the bike is paid for. But in more practical terms I have saved so much money in gasoline and parking that I can really say it paid for itself after four years of purchasing it. It’s my best investment. I know it’s pricey but believe me it’s worth every penny. The modifications I’ve made are: 1. Changed the plate from 50 to 44 and it’s been the best decision ever. When I first purchased it I wasn’t sure if I needed the smaller plate but after 2 months it became clear that my pedaling just wasn’t right. I never used the 6th gear, the 4th felt too loose and the 5th too tight. I’m a woman with very short legs so I don’t know if that’s a factor but when I changed the plate WOW! It made ALL the difference! Now I use all 6 gears and my pedaling is comfortable in any of them. 2. The grips. My original grips were the foamy ones. They were not bad but they didn’t absorbe any of the bumps on the road. So I placed some Ergon G1 grips and they are heavenly. No wrist tension, no tiredness from longer rides. These are a must! 3. The saddle. Got a Brooks C17s (the ladies version) Cambium. It feels like I’m sitting in one of those home made swings made with a car’s tire. I had bought a leather B17 at first but after a year of use I just couldn’t find its sweet spot. I traded it for the Cambium and it way better To those considering getting one of these wonder bikes DO IT! It will become your best transportation companion for years to come. You won’t regret it!

I own a different type of fold-up bike, a Dahon, and although I truly enjoy and appreciate it ... I can see the difference in quality that has gone into the Brompton bike, which is way easier to fold-up, and cart around in fold-up position. I love how you can carry the Brompton aboard a plane and stow it above the airline seat. (Although, I would not have the strength to lift it that high. Great for you strong guys & gals.) Yet, I could easily get this aboard a bus! Perhaps, a train, too. It would easily store in a car, with hardly any fuss. I love how the greasier parts of the bike are protected from getting onto clothing, room, and car ... when folded. Brilliant, that the air pump attaches to the bike, AND ... how the tools and spare tire are contained inside the bike. 👍 And, the carry bag that attaches on the front of the bike is also super cool as it looks like it can hold a lot. It even remains neatly fitted when the bike folds-up. I want one of these bikes, you've sold me! ❤️. That travois carrier is amazing, too. And, the lights ... oh my!

I have been multimodal commuting with my beloved 2012 M3R Brompton for years--it is literally a life changer--for my physical health as well as my mental health. I routinely do the grocery shopping for a family of 5 using it with my Brompton C bag, the rear rack and my Burley Travoy (another lifestyle game changer). Last year, I bought an H6R for my daughter who lives with us. She uses it daily to get to college, where she uses it on both ends of a bus run. Finally, I just purchased a limited edition C-line Explore M6L. Not sure if I will upgrade to a rack in back yet, as I have the Travoy. My motivation for the new bike had nothing to do with my old M3R being out of date. I just decided I needed the extra gearing for hills, now that I'm in my 60s. The presences of these bikes in our lives has allowed my family to get rid of a car, to get more exercise, and to live lighter on the planet. We also now routinely travel with the Bromptons on all of our vacations. I cannot imagine my life without my Brompton bike!

Great review! It gives potential buyers a really good overview. I bought a used S6L Black Lacquer with the -12% gearing a year and a half ago. I live in San Francisco, so I changed the chainring to a 39t. Now I have the same low gear that I have on my road bike and I can climb most any hill here. I love this bike! It is great for traveling since I can put it right behind the driver’s seat in my camper van. No worries of it being stolen off of a bike rack. It’s probably my favorite bike from 60 years of riding. I’m only sorry I didn’t get one years ago!

I think it's worth pointing out, because you have the beautiful clear lacquer finish, the the welds are actually hand brased, which is a much stronger and lighter way to assemble a bicycle. Happy riding! 😁

I have had a Tern D7i for four years and I agree it is a very good, sturdy bike. I rode it twice around Central Park yesterday with my wife, who has the same model Tern and it was great fun. However, I covet a Brompton something crazy! When I can justify it, I will step up to a Brompton, (probably the same model shown in this video).

I can’t lie I came from a DH and Enduro background and laughed at the idea of some “mug” paying 4 figures for a foldy bike, then had the opportunity to use the E brompton for commuting when travelling inner city via trains and multiple connections, I quickly realised how narrow minded I was these are amazing tools and the design is years in front of anything else in the market, we have a saying at work that there’s 2 styles of folding bike, brompton and non brompton

When my husband first told me about the Brompton i was quite amused. You know hes kind of careful with money so i find it weird why he got attracted to this brand. then during covid we got 2 of them, we thought since we saved our travel funds for that 2 years, might as well just get something to entertain ourselves within our own country. and then we got hooked. now we have 3 bromptons, and always using our B when we out for a date. quite a game changer.

I vouch for it all. They’re awesome. The most ingenious folding design. The clever features like the bag carrier, and even the whole range of different bags available. The build quality: those aren’t welds, which can weaken the steel, but hand brazed joints requiring skilled tradesmen. I think that, while there have been changes made over the years, these have always been retro-compatible.

Great review of the Brompton bicycle. Bravo! I bought my first Brompton in 2000 (21 years ago!) and it is absolutely true that these bikes last for decades. I finally just upgraded to the H6L with titanium forks. Loving the new bike with 6-speeds and lighter weight. However, I have my old Brompton booked in for a complete refurbishment, so I will have a second bike for my wife when we go on holiday. On that note, I take this bike with me whenever I go on vacation by car. So easy to pop in the trunk. I love this brand and it is impressive that they are one of the only bike companies in the world that still manufactures their bicycles in Europe (actually the UK to be precise).

I made a long thin toolkit bag for the main frame from a bit of tent material with a shoelace as a tie. This goes in first, with a folded inner tube next. The lace on both means you can get them out! A folded up black garbage sack tucks up into the short front bit of the frame in case you need to take it somewhere when its wet. You can even tear head and arm holes in the sack if you are caught out without a coat in the rain?

Really great review. I had a Tern D7 folder. I’m in NYC and we have Citibike for commuting. I also have my Trek FX2 Hybrid for leisure rides. I ended up getting rid of my Tern. Wasn’t using it as much. Also, once, the handle bars almost came off while I was riding. It just didn’t feel as well made as it could have been. It was a bit heavy also. Suddenly, I’m thinking of a folder again and have been researching Brompton. I’m also wondering if I should get an electric Brompton. I play tenor saxophone and travel around the city with it, often between boroughs, and often have to go over a bridge with it on my back. Citibike electric works well, but you can’t always find one.

I have a Brompton and worked at a bicycle shop for many years. One thing you might want to tell people is when the saddle is lowered it locks the bicycle in place. I just restarted riding again and it feels less intimidating than my mountain bike with slick tires that I used to commute. I usually carry it but rolling it looks like a better idea. I need to try that. I should have gotten it with the dynamo lighting system. I don’t have the rack so I don’t think it rolls as well but I’m not sure. Great video! Comprehensive, very thoughtful, and well-delivered. Your love for your Brompton shines through, and you hit on all the things that make a Brompton unique and excellent for city touring -- or any kind of touring. A few years ago I moved to Pacific Grove, Ca, from a very flat town where it was easy to ride bikes. PG is extremely hilly and at first I thought my Brompton would be overmatched. I even got an electric bike to handle the hills. But lately I've gone back to my Brommie, and even though some of the hills are extremely steep and I sometimes have to push it a block or two, it's still worth it because it's just too much fun to ride and it's incredibly convenient for shopping or taking to the beach or cruising along the shoreline. When you get down to it, there's just nothing like a Brompton.

Excellent review. I have been a happy Brompton owner for 10 years: it is a 2 speed with the straight handlebars, mudguards and a bag that fits on the front block. I use it mainly for commuting a 4.5 mile journey to my office each day, so 9 miles total. In addition to all the positive points you make about design, comfort, cargo carrying and portability - with which I wholeheartedly agree - I would add security. I live in London and have never owned and used one bike for so long. In part this is because of its utility and durability but it is also because the Brompton has never been stolen. I use it all the time because at most of my destinations, I can just fold it up and take it inside. Often I will bring a D-lock but if I've forgotten it, it doesn't matter. P.S. Thanks for the tip about folding the bike with the bag attached: 10 years of ownership and I never knew you could do that! P.P.S. You are much more skilful and quicker at folding yours than I am!!

Very interesting video on the legendary Brompton folding bike. I ride a folding bike to work for years of much less clever design but still loved it. Since then I've moved to a kick scooter as they are much smaller and easier to store, etc. They also keep me free of the wrist, rear end, and knee issues that plagued me for the more than 40 years I rode upright and recumbent cycles.

Excellent review, well presented. Love my Brompton too. I never let my handlebars “fall” to the lock position however, perhaps I am old-school, I like to let them down gently as it feels more mechanically sympathetic 😊 As for riding distances, I agree, the Brompton is fully capable. I regularly have one-shot outings in the 30 - 40 mile range on my M6L and have absolutely no problem achieving this in comfort. I did find the standard plastic saddle to be generally comfy although rather “sweaty” on longer rides so have changed this for a leather Brooks B17 Standard, which works really well for me and the bike. I have Brooks on my other bikes too, so it seemed a natural upgrade for the Brompton. Interestingly, before I got the B17, I “borrowed” a B17 Narrow from my road bike and that just did not suit the Brompton riding position at all, so for me the wider “standard” works well, the “narrow” does not. The shopping cart mode looks to work well with your R version. Mine has no rack, and it really has to be carried when folded, so that is a minus point for the “L” version, one I can live with though for my usage.
@EverydayCycling
@EverydayCycling 4 жыл бұрын
That was an excellent comment from your part. Thank you! I also use Brooks on all my bikes. A C-17 on the Brompton, B-17 on my touring, and a Flyer on my other touring bike that I keep in Brazil. The Brompton has a more upright riding position than your road bike, and having all your weight on the narrower saddle probably made it super uncomfortable, I totally understand that. I'm glad you're enjoying your bike and doesn't feel the need for the rack. I definitely like the looks of the L version more, but the rack is just a lot of convenience for me. Have you seen the Wheel Extension arm I use? It makes the bike super stable. Take a look at my other video, "The 3 BEST upgrades and accessories on my Brompton". You may find that helpful!

Truly an excellent review and insight into the qualities of the Brompton. Previous to watching this I had thought they were overpriced in comparison to other folding bikes but seeing how well thought out they are and what a difference 16" wheels and a 3 part folding mechanism makes I am persuaded the extra cost is somewhat justified. I recently took a coach trip and at one stop I noticed someone off-loading a folding bike. I hadn't realised that folding bikes could be carried via coach and it piqued my interest. After looking at folding bike reviews I wondered why Brompton earned so much praise. I think your excellent video demonstrates this in every way possible. I was engaged from start to finish. You covered just about every reason I could think of except one. That is wheel size, does having a 16" wheel size mean that more effort needs to be exerted to cover a certain distance? I apologise if this seems a ridiculous question but you mentioned having owned 20" folding bikes previously, so I guess you are qualified to answer. Thanks again for a truly great and in-depth review.

I used to take the communter bus to the downtown and ride the last 2 miles on my Brompton for 7 years. I would store the bike under my desk in the cube. I have to hold onto the bike in order to get to my cube and it became difficult as it is heavy for a long distance. The slick painted surface is difficult to get a good grip. I ended up getting tennis racket grip tape and wrapped around where I would hold it. The wrap is very thin and gives good grip and doesn't damage the paint. The wrapped is great especially when it is raining as it absorbs the mositure so I don't loose the grip... If you do end up going with a bag in the front, it does create resistence when you ride. It just takes more energy. I once managed to put a box from the printer paper and used the strap to hold the box down. Very practical.

An excellent and comprehensive review - thanks. I’ve had the Brompton Electric model for around 18 months now and love it....I “echo” all the points in this video. Just a word of warning, if you are new to bikes with small wheels, they need caution when riding, as they can be “twitchy” compared to bikes with full sized wheels....I managed to fall off mine just trying to do what I’d have done on a “normal” bike....trying to go from road to pavement on a shallow drop kerb....and fell flat on my face, breaking a couple of bones in the process! - also take care riding over cattle grids - my advice is avoid it. Ride a Brompton with care and you’ll have years of enjoyment, but just be aware the handling characteristics are different from what you may have been used to.

My wife & I have had our Brompton for 10 yrs and even used them with a large front accessory bag to shop annually at our farmers’ mkts in our suburban area north of Chicago. Bag volume & weight capacities area amazing. And Brompton was genius since the way they’ve mounted the bag fastener bracket on the chassis’ main horizontal top bar (& therefore NOT the handlebars as is commonly designed on other bikes) there is absolutely NEVER any imbalance caused by bag weight, even when turning the handle bars along the roadway! That’s proven to be a huge benefit in handling. We also own a pair of German made for the Brompton bikes a perfectly sized lightweight fiberglass locking padded shipping suitcase approved for airline cargo so for each of our European trips we’ve had no problem bringing our wonderful Bromptons along with us, especially on our Tuscany trips & the gearing range with our 6-speed gearing has proven remarkably versatile. And the feature list is almost endless! Love them.

My Brompton just passed it’s 10yr anniversary and I’ve ridden all over New York City, still in good shape. I will say that “nipple” and the part it locks into are a potential problem. In my case, the part the nipple clicks into broke, but there are several places in NYC where you can get Brompton parts so it got fixed quickly. I don’t think letting the steering column drop from its full height when folding is good for the lifespan of those locking parts - you can drop from a few inches and it will still lock.

I have just watched this: Totally brilliant. And the best folding demo I’ve ever seen. You are so right, we can’t watch them enough.

You have really done Brompton a service by presenting their bike in such a flattering light. Excellent video.

Thank you so much! This is one of the most complete reviews I’ve seen. The tri-fold design along with the front wheel hook makes this the best foldable bike around. I didn’t know about the tire tube and tool kit inside the frame. How awesome is that! Thank you again.

Great review. I love my Brampton. I rode a Dahon single speed for three years prior as my daily commute, then the handlebars snapped off and so I upgraded to the Brompton. Worth every penny. Servicing can get expensive but it’s never missed a beat.

I got my H6L Black Edition in Flame Lacquer just weeks ago -- after watching your incredible video. I've probably watched it once a week since then. Each week I know my bike a little bit better, and after each viewing I learn something new from you. For example, I just started riding with a new bag attached to the luggage block -- and only after my last viewing of your video did I realize that I didn't have to remove the bag before every fold. Of course, that info was in your video the first time I watched it -- but since I didn't own a bag back then, that info wasn't as relevant to me back then. But it is now. Your video is the gift that keeps on giving -- and I thank you for it!

I love the design and that folding mechanism. But the price's really beyond mine 🤣

The initial investment is a downside, but once you do invest in one of these, maintaining it is not a big issue!

A brompton 'may' appear expensive if you compare it to a cheap run of the mill bike, but believe me, once you own one and ride it for a while, you'll soon realise it is well worth the money. One other comment about the apparent expensive price.. my Brompton cost a third of the price of each of the last two mountain bikes i bought (and I use the brompton a LOT more than either of them). So I actually consider it quite a bargain.

I met a lady on a ferry who had one while i rocked up with my Qi cycle, she put it down like a long term investment like buying a car. given the lifecycle of these bikes it makes a lot more sense to not think about the up front cost but the cost of the bike over 3-5 years after doing some math on my train trips daily i realized that if i cut my trips in half the bike was effectively paid for, put the money down a couple of weeks later now my shopping bike and have done some long distance trips on it, was a perfect match for my lifestyle and that is what i think you need to be confident about before cutting over. if you are already riding to work then its worth considering the comfort is worth it but it is highly agile due to its small stature and easy to maneuver around people. dropping the weight below 10KG also helped.

Yeremias Adi - I must admit, I flinched a bit at the price, but after deliberating and saving for a while, I finally decided to buy. My Brompton is my most ridden bike of all time, used daily, so that initial investment feels okay now. As others have found, this bike can be liberating.

Yeremias Adi --- Give up something else for a year, like takeaway coffee or beer and you'll be able to afford a Brompton in no time.

Thank you Victor for this amazing content which I really appreciate. A few questions when you have a moment: 1. What’s the name of the front bag? (It may be discontinued. If so, have you a recommendation?) Does the bag obstruct the front light when mounted? 2. Would you advise adjusting the handle bar (M) if they are too far? (I must have short arms) would this change the integrity of the ride? 3. Have you also any recommendations for a bike bag? Especially when we need to bring them into crowded restaurants (well, post pandemic).

Great video, excellent review. This was a really good overview of the benefits and cool features of a Brommie. I own a Brompton Black Edition Superlight S6L-X in Rocket Red. My transport of choice in and around London, particularly in these crazy times of social distancing and avoiding public transport. Thumbs up and subscribed. Bike safe bro.

Thankyou, l love my Brompton. I bought the higher handle bars, the rear luggage rack with wheels and the front bag, as shown on your video. It’s great for storing in our appartment, behind the settee. I found travelling on public transport, it was ok. However some of the public bus seats, aren’t always spaced the same. (Some the bike slots ok, others it dosnt). I made a soft cover, so it looks like a slim case. ( l found this best, because the Brompton does attract attention and travelling late, found it best not to bring attention to my luggage) l put my cycle helmet in a bag & slip on dress trousers, if it’s a late journey on public transport. Travelling on trains was the easiest journeys. Yes l make sure l have local taxi or bus routes, as a back up if my legs get tired after 18 miles. Mine has 3 gears.I tried for years to get Brompton tools. Still unable to get one set. Best wishes to you and viewers. ☺️🌈👌
