Many boats have small windows. Our was to have large opening window so we could enjoy the beautiful scenery we went to so much trouble to get to! We do have thick curtains for privacy at night that simple snap in place. LEXAN is used for the windows for strength. Best/Roy

Watched it then had hubs watch it! You designed a beautiful boat Mr. Roy Schreyer! I love all the windows and even a skylight. What more could you ask for. It's hard to find a used houseboat that's 20' and you made one that is only 16'. Going to scan comments to see what the total cost was to make. Thanks for posting. Your plan prices are very reasonable.

This is my next goal. I like the design of the top very much- like a canal boat. I was looking at using some sort of canvas-stitch and glue for parts of the top and idealy would hinge to allow a more open feel when at anchor. Nice job.

The wood ceiling insulates, works also to keep heat out, so does not heat up and the cabin is quite comfortable and cool. Best/Roy

Still I obsess over a house boat. I am not even a stiffler about it having a motor. lol.
@roydesignedthat
@roydesignedthat 8 жыл бұрын
+Zack Lee Wright Houseboats are great! In my opinion the trouble comes when they get too big. With the added size there is little chance you will see anything new on the water as it does not take long to get to know the area. If it becomes boring, the boat needs to be moved to new cruising grounds. The larger the harder to do. If your fine with hanging in one spot then there is no problem. You mentioned not needing a motor so it sounds like you want a base. It is why I built as small as possible. We can go anywhere there is a road or a creek!

Cool design but why not just buy a used pontoon boat And just build the house on top of that . instead of making the hull part yourself .
@roydesignedthat
@roydesignedthat 9 жыл бұрын
The main reason is that you end up with a higher structure and with a barge hull the structure is kept low! The hull is the easier part of the build. When using pontoons you must be very careful when adding a structure as too much weight can make for an unsafe boat. Ours is also lightly built to easily trailer! Hope this helps. Best/Roy

@@memyself767 Pontoons" are Ok for houseboats but not as good as barge hulls like DIANNE'S ROSE. The pontoon styled houseboat tends to be top heavy if home built, while if building your own barge hull (this is not hard!) the centre of gravity is much lower making a more sea worthy boat when comparing the two! I see that you created 16 chambers in case if the boat starts taking in on water that now all chambers gets flooded thus helping to prevent listing and sinking. I would have taken it a bit further in the name of preventive measures and I would have placed on each chambers a cube of thick plastic filled with air taking up the whole space per each chamber (total of 16 measured air filled cubes for 16 chambers), that way, if a puncture were to happen and the boat were to start taking on water, the cubes filled with air acting as a safe line would help the boat stay afloat and would severely limit the volume of water it can get inside. Nevertheless, I think you did a great job and I hope your project last for many many fun years!

Thanks Jeff, DIANNE'S ROSE was an exercise in building the minimum size needed to be comfortable as a Tiny Houseboat. We are also budget conscious and the design needed to be cheap to own and operate. Living on it's trailer when not in use, saves marina costs and we are flexible where we can launch. low fuel costs keep us from worrying about the expense of a trip. She is a fun boat and tougher than many predicted. I've easily handled 3 -4 foot waves out in Georgian Bay! Best/Roy

I like the design, its cubic hull makes it very economical on the fact that ply comes rectangular and so little scrap is left. The bow is lifted up so that the bow wave will go under the hull rather than around it, though on the side the bow wave does separate a little about three feet aft of the front corner, I would have thought that lifting the transom a little would help to reduce the eddies at the centre part , but because the sides are lifted and the draft is small, there does not seem to be much eddies even though that straight run transom is used for a planing hull, which this small outboard will keep it in displacement form. I would add a few handrails around the front and rear decks to act as safety devices. Perhaps some sort of bow-thruster could help as without a deep keel, it will skid sideways, when navigating in tight places, I must congratulate you that with such simple squarish/cubic lines you achieved a nice wave around that hull. The wave formations shows that the hull is nowhere near its limiting speed. Considering the simplicity it is quite an efficient hydrodynamic hull. Congratulations and may you enjoy every minute of it.

@roydesignedthat 9 жыл бұрын
Carmel Pule' The hull is designed this way to also allow for a bigger motor (25 hp) to get it up on plane. Your observations are correct and thank you! Best/Roy

Roy......LOVE this little thing!! I will be ordering plans if they are still available. One question I would like to ask you now that you have had it out and used it on several outings........What would you do/design differently? If you are anything like me you only see these things AFTER the prototyping.....LOL!!! For instance, would you make it longer/shorter, wider narrower, more/less cabin height, lighter/heavier....blah, blah, blah?!?! I think you get what Im getting at. It looks like a great design as is but I would really like to know if you have a "I wish I did it this way" list. I have been studying all I can find on your craft including your web sight......Thanks so much for sharing your ship!!!!! Subscribed! Brett Hays
@roydesignedthat
@roydesignedthat 9 жыл бұрын
Brett Hays Hi Brett, Plans are available when you are ready, simply email me at royschreyer@gmail.com. Changes? I am not 100% happy with the 2 stroke 9.8 hp outboard we have. It was all we could afford but if I had my way I would get a 4 stroke 9.9 hp long shaft, high thrust. While a 25 hp is also a close second, this build is an exercise in minimal requirement to live for extended periods of time out in the wilds, so I'd still stay with the smaller motor. Truthfully that is about it. I will design a bigger version soon but because many request it and to incorporate wheelchair accessibility, After testing it will be for sale not our Rose. Small is why we save money boating. If you go bigger a bigger tow vehicle is required. Docking fees are more. Fuel usage goes up. All things that may contribute to making boating too expensive for us to do! Best/Roy

Inside has a clear standing head room of 6', 8 1/2"! The sides, over the benches, drops in height about 5" to 6' 3". Overall boat height is 6' 6" above the waterline and 6" below = 7' overall. This height can be adjusted slightly by lowering the hatches to flush mounts or by trimming the cabin height slightly but I am pleased with the results as is. Best/Roy

The plans offer exact specs and construction photos with manual intertwined for those people wishing to build our Dianne'S Rose. I won't discourage anyone from going it alone but I know very well the time and effort spent scratching my head figuring out all these details. No ballast required, Gear/water/gas/food/supplies are enough. The object is to stay light so we draw less, which makes trailering to far away places more practical and keeps draft to a minimum. This both improves performance and options where we can sneak into and camp. Best/Roy

Marine Ply, Okoume where the grain was to show as it looks nicer and Meranti elsewhere. All was Epoxy sealed and the hull and roof was glassed as well. This could be lowered to $2500 if you settled for a "work boat finish", paint quality rather than varnished wood! Visit RoyDesignedThat(dot)com for more info...Best/Roy

This unique project has given us loads of fun and has gotten a lot of press not to mention countless compliments anywhere we stop!. We recently took her to a couple boat shows/festivals and she won prizes at each. Most Innovative Design at the First Annual Port Aransas Ply-Wood Boats Festival was especially an honor to receive. We are also very honored that Australian Amateur Boat Building has highlighted her on their cover and many other fine magazines have included her. The latest is Wooden Boat's "SMALL BOATS"!!! Do check out my You Tube channel, there is a "build" video and many others so you can see how well the boat functions in varied conditions. The "Full Plans" and "Study Plans" are available. The "Study Plans" include;...an 8 X 10 color cover photo...13 page write up explaining the construction with 37 photos showing the progress during the build...a large draft with plan, front, side, and rear views...a five page article explaining the inspiration and details of the design, which was printed in Small Craft Advisor Magazine, issue #81 and a 11 X 17" color poster. They are $30.00 US and $35.00 US for overseas ( includes postage and a receipt). They are also available in PDF for $25 US. Full Plans in PDF are $230.00 US. The "Full Plans" in print are $285 US plus postage, about $20 = $305.00 US in North America - $325.00 US for overseas. Full size templates are included for the paper plans also Included are 21 large 18 X 24" sheets with drawings, photos and write up (as a manual), a large page of the boat's plan "cartoon" with color photos around the border showing its many uses. You can send a personal check, money order, or Western Union Payment to...Roy A Schreyer, 177 Antigua Drive, Wasaga Beach, Ontario, L9Z 2S2, Canada. I now also have PAY PAL, you can direct your payment through Pay Pal to royschreyer@gmail.com I should mention to check my web site www.RoyDesignedThat.com (It is a work in progress showing my work over the years) and You Tube for my recent videos(type-royschreyer) as one video shows us out with snow on the riverbanks but we're warm thanks to a mini wood stove in the boat. If you want to call, feel free, 705-429-6266. Best/Roy. ci3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/8CBWEZYl_gju-O0mEKjDNw0Eh_qIbYUu1oZBKfZqOypmLO1gU9NfBBUnKK5HrwoN-VKG8iQn_PvQpZDlbxq0IwVL9dQOy_HcGJ0=s0-d-e1-ft#mail.google.com/mail/u/0/images/cleardot.gif Here is a review from James Siddle, who has purchased a set of plans........"My review of the plans makes me think I have received a tutorial on finish carpentry. The many pictures are wonderful. As the saying goes "A picture is worth a thousand words" so they are great. Your life's calling shows in the detail and the carefulness with which the plans and photos are put together. Thanks. James."....... .Here is a write up from Tiny Homes on the Move Wheels and Water... that may also interest you........ DIANNE’S ROSE is a small “Tiny” if you will, House/Shanty/Camp boat that my wife, Dianne Roselee, inspired me to design. She never liked the “tippy” side of sailing and one day commented she’d come out more if we had a comfortable boat. This 17’ X 8’ beam, houseboat is the result. Needing only 6” to float, it is perfect for sneaking into shallow coves and pulling up to isolated beaches - a feature we enjoyed in our beach cruising sailboat. A refined barge hull was the solution needed to achieve this draft and the accommodations for Dianne’s comfort. This hull shape also does not limit us to protected waters and has proven quite sea worthy! The cabin, 8’ X 10’, has areas that preform dual function (or more). There are two couches, 62” long, facing each other, that serve as lounge, driver’s seat, dinning and sleeping areas. We have a queen-sized bed when filler boards are in place! These boards morph into the dining table and additional seats and then again into the steps and storage shelves under the decks. There is a small bathroom on the left rear side, 32” X 36”, with full standing headroom. The composting toilet (which does not smell) can slide under the rear deck to create a private changing room. This space is also our coat closet. A kitchenette is on the opposite side, with a propane camp stove (this way we can also cook outside). The space under the rear deck is utilized as a pantry and cooler for food storage. Hang a privacy curtain across the aisle, and the back of the boat becomes a full bathroom. Toilet, sink and bathing. Set up camp style of course, using a basin to stand in and a pitcher to wet and rinse. Hot water provided from a heated pot or solar bag! The front, 4’ X 8’, and back, 28” X8’ decks add livability to the small cabin. Storage is below these porches and the rear porch carries fuels, gas and propane (fuel boxes to come and they will double as benches to sit and fish). The front porch could be tented in to provide additional sleeping space similar to “pop-up” tent trailers. This could make a small family comfortable on extended outings! The boat has had some unforeseen uses at home on its trailer (saving marina costs), as a “man cave,” guest house, and a second bathroom. DIANNE’S ROSE was launched June 15th, 2013, so we’ll get to know her better, but she is already making us very happy. The small size has been a large part of the fun! Our motor is small as well, a 9.8 hp outboard. Fuel costs are not a worry and will not interfere with our enjoyment of the beautiful scenery as it passes by at a steady 6 mph (3/4 throttle). Building DIANNE’S ROSE is straight forward as I designed her construction to be very basic but strong! Flat panels are first assembled on a bench. These panels slip together “egg carton” style or are just butt joined with epoxy and screws. Ply hull panels are then bent on to the frames, marked and cut with no complicated measurements to calculate! The hull combines “stitch and glue” with “frame” construction using each where they are most advantageous! The roof appears difficult but is not hard with templates provided. The curve is broken into three manageable sections and T&G planks follow the shape easily, creating a strong but light structure when fiberglass is added. The sound of hard rain lulls us to sleep with this wood/glass canopy! This boat takes about 600hrs to build so does require commitment. I personally know it has many rewards along the way, the mile stones come one by one, encouraging you to push on. Turning the hull is a big one. Friends visit to see our progress, some bring useful materials, others even help build! On occasion a boat party breaks out and no work gets done at all, but this is just part of the fun! As I see it, time passes regardless, this “Tiny” Houseboat will give you something to show for it! Best/Roy

All this and an enclosed head that is also a change room and closet and a small but efficient kitchen.

i love what you did but for you to build one for me would be so impractical because the labor is insanely time intensive, think of how much you would need to be paid to build this for someone else and that would make it impractical to be able to sell- unless someone has to much time on their hands or is willing to work hard and intensive labor for$2.00 an hour - so i guess my question wpuld be how much you want to sell one built for to make your wages?
@roydesignedthat

You are correct, it becomes expensive for the average person. I will say that for the person who enjoys the process of building a boat on there own "spare" time it can be very rewarding and this is when the expense becomes only the material ! Some are committed and call the build fun (it was for me). I know it is hard! Please remember it took me 15 yrs to get my act together to build this boat. In that time I drew half a dozen boats I thought I'd get to "next spring". Hang in there and get on the water with something smaller in the mean time and I guarantee you will have lots of fun on that too! All the best and good luck! Roy

@roydesignedthat
@roydesignedthat 6 жыл бұрын
The build cost about $4500 CAD. The "cheap" part is ownership! No marina fees as she live on her trailer when not in use. The 9.8 hp motor costs little to run and we often go for a couple of weeks and spend only $50 in fuel. With the trailer, we can travel to new locations far and wide! This season DIANNE'S ROSE was up in the North Channel, a 6 hour drive but it is a world renowned cruising ground! We have trailored to Texas! She is a tough little boat that is easy to maintain. I hit a submerged rock and not long after a stump! Neither caused much fuss. I am ruff on my boats as I enjoy exploring and our DR has proven up to the task. What is really nice is she handles well in a vatiety of conditions including managing 3-4 waves with confidence. Best/Roy

@roydesignedthat

Hi Thomas, with trailer but not motor, we spent about $4500 CAD. I purchased a used boat trailer and motor package for $550 but sold the motor for almost that. Therefore the trailer was basically free! Where this design save us is in use. It lives on the trailer, ready to go but costing us nothing. This is better than being at a dock as she is easy to launch and see new places. Some have commented that the motor, a 9.8 hp, is too small but it costs us nothing to run and we manage a comfortable pace of 6 mph at 3/4 throttle. My buddy spends $200 for a day out on the boat we spend $20!!! Best/Roy

While DIANNE'S ROSE can handle rough waters, the intent is that it can get you home if the weather turns and this it can but good seamanship requires that a captain should avoid such conditions! I don't as I'm testing limits and I am happy that our houseboat has proven very tough. Error on the side of cation. Best/Roy

Fair point, if discussing the construction alone but it can be done extremely cheaply as well if reclaimed lumber and ply was used! Ownership, storage and use are especially cheap as the boat lives on it's trailer saving marina fees...It stores under a tarp...and on one trip of eight days we payed only $38 on fuel! So while there is of course a cost, this design offers one of the cheapest ways to get out and go boating!!! Best/Roy

We have had several serious offers but it is ours and the first one ever built so we plan on keeping her! I do want to build a longer version of this design, which I would sell but keep in mind "one off" builds can be costly as there is no savings that production offer. Best/Roy

Sorry Pat, it no doubt made you feel unwell. I've listened to some who feel ill and made a newer version without the flip transition that I hoped they could handle. I keep this one up as many do like it and it is linked to other sites articles! Here is the link for the "new" vid. I hope it is better for you....kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIKwnWmMgt2Vibc
