I also could work on a bleader feed or a larger resovour, but for my purposes, this set up will serve well! Another idea is to add a secondary back pan, inverted and filled with sand! This would retain heat better and if I found the same type of pan, they would nest together when stored! Aslo a small fan to drive down the heat is an option! While the temp raised about 15* , I'm sure it was more up on the ceiling! It wouldn't change the average but would even it out! AllthebestRoy

Any information on performance of the mini compared to the full size rose?I'm curious how it does with the same 9.9 horse outboard
@roydesignedthat2 күн бұрын
@ronaldharris6569 I expect a 9.9 hp will do better, speed wise and be much quieter than the 4hp four stroke single cylinder we tested! It pushed MiniD along at about the speed we can go on our DIANNE'S ROSE with her 9.8 hp. I felt weight on the stern and the extra fuel might be expensive, but MiniD could handle the weight fine! I have an old 1996 9.9hp four stroke 2cyl that I plan to test next season! As it can be run at lower rpms, it should still sop fuel and be very quiet. I expect it will add speed, up to 10 mph ish! Most times we cruise at 5 to 6 mph aboard our Rose! She maxes out at 6.5 mph with the 9.8 hp 2 stroke! BestRoy
@ronaldharris65692 күн бұрын
@roydesignedthat thank you for the information roy,I live near a large relative swift river so so a boat capable of at least 10 mph is necessary to travel up river and there are barges to get around so if I build a boat it would need to move fast at times

Can it be junk rigged?
@roydesignedthat3 күн бұрын
@glenpinpat yes it can, but it would need a heavier duty tabernacle, which then would cut the full queen berth in two! As is, the gunter main mast's tabernacle sits on a triple laminated beam and keeps the berth clear. This also why I went with the single Leeboard, it works like a centerboard but is out on the hulls side. As is, I can set up the sails in 20min!!! The main mast pivots up and the mainstay is the only stay that clips in place and is tensioned! The side stays remain on at all times, the boom is on the mast with the mainsail bundled to it. The mizzen just drops into its slot, sail furled to it, and we are off! Gunter rigs are not popular but are very useful for a trailerable boat! Also of note, there are two lexan cheeks that lock in three top yard, which is split and the two halves are screwed through the mainsail, so it peeks as high as possible! I sewed my own sails, but they work quite well...AllthebestRoy

@@roydesignedthat I believe it. I have done a lot of research (online) and it seems you could spend a lifetime in the Georgian Bay area. But do you ever consider trailering to other areas?
@roydesignedthat3 күн бұрын
@jpbeauchemin yes, we have trailered DIANNE'S ROSE all the way to the Texas coast! This was to show her at a couple of shows, one in Oklahoma and the other in Port Aransas! A great trip! We typically trailer 2 to 6 hours to get to spots we like. I've been busy with a boat build, MiniD (done now), and have had a bad hip, which has slowed the amount of work I could do, but I'm now recovering from surgery, so all is good, but the combination of working on my own time, spending on materials and not working regularly, have us a bit short of capital of late. So gas costs have been a factor in our dissension as to how far we travel! Actually, my new MiniD design is in part to have a smaller, therefore lighter, camper boat so we can travel farther with less cost! It has virtually the same comfort as our Rose, the key is Dianne likes it! We are keeping DIANNE'S ROSE for now but may need to pick one or the other once we are sure of which works best for us! Planning for our later years! AllthebestRoy

@kittortuga2720 I do have a video made of this. I'll look to find it and include it in a comment for you. I can set up to go in about 20min once I've refreshed the procedure after a few outings. The gunter rig is key, due to the shorter main in the tabernacle/"hinge", the side stays are always on, I only need to pull the forward stay to raise the mast, pin it at the base, clip the forestry on the bow, tension and then raise the yard which is through bolted to the sail and bundled on the boom! Then stick in the mizzen mast and bumpkin, unroll the sail, which is already on the mast, set the sprit. I set off and see the conditions before hanking on the jib, stored in a bow deck hatch. Reefing is easy enough. I can douse the jib from the cockpit ( I added a downhaul as on time the wind picked up and going forward was dicy). I might add a bow sprit in the future to add a larger jibsail for light winds. Oh, by the way, I renewed these sails from another set, not perfect, but they work! Lots of fun! AllthebestRoy

I promised I would try to state a brief reason why I think this is special. Small enough to easily handle. Large enough to do my favorite boating things : Explore Cook and eat Sleep. I don’t care as much about speed or seaworthy. Not that it isn’t safe, but if you compromise space over sea worthy I pick space , for my desires at least. Seems perfect for that and I am serious that I would like to purchased this or another version if it goes up for sale and if I could afford it if/when it goes up for sale.
@roydesignedthat11 күн бұрын
Thanks Natter, by the way, she is more sea worthy than many would guess! High freeboard, strong sealable windows, and good balance with most of the weight secured low in the form of gear and supplies! Also, float chambers and divided compartments will keep her from sinking!!! I want to use her for one more season before deciding if we will sell! I'm drawing plans for folks to be able to build there own! Visit RoyDesignedThat.com to see when I post them. Note, the site formats best on a lap or desktop...AllthebestRoy

Sorry Roy! I guess what I mean is I like its shape. Instead of having to worry about a pointy front I love having more room ! Didn’t mean to assume it wasn’t sea worthy! I just mean I am not looking to do that kind of boating (by choice at least ) and so I don’t need to find something super focused on that design wise ? I can’t remember if I ever told you but I made a raft for the Mississippi years ago and it was a 16x16 foot square deal. Just loved it.

@Natter20002 no worries, I get it! I am unlikely to ever design a pointy bowed boat! I ownd one for 20 yrs and felt it unsafe to go forward, it was more prone to broaching, and little space was available for cabin comforts! I like pram bows!!!

Love your cutter ketch rig? How many hours did it take you to build this puppy? How many lbs to trailer?
@roydesignedthat12 күн бұрын
@BethelHealthBuilders about 400 to 500 hours part time. A good deal of time was spent head scratching! When designing the first one, it takes longer than when all the sizes are given to you in plans! CROW is about 900 lbs. She benefits from her sturdy build, I literally have run her up on rocky islands! Her bilge keels and sceg have 1/4" stainless caps! About 200 lbs ballast is added in the form of secured gear and supplies, low in her belly! CROW'S hull is generously arched and rockerred! This gives her a soft ride but she firm's up when pressed because of the chines! I often sit on the low side when sailing! People started to forget about how to dress for outdoors when they got central heating and aircon at home and work as well as in cars. The lee boards a common sight on old style 🇬🇧 and of course Dutch sailing barges.

True, Clive! I helped my buddy with Scotts and winter camp! Some parents would complain if we kept events in the cold but I qould point out the leasons on how to dress will help the kids for the rest of their lives! We kept extra socks hats and gloves handy and if their coats were too airy I'd cut a garbage bag to use as a Poncho! I've been to northern Germany and Amsterdam and have looked closely at their leeboards and tabernacles! Ive chosen a single leeboard as I also have shallow builge keels. The leeboard needed not be too large as a result! Also the hull angle is close to the angle of heal! Perfect for it to be used on both tacks, on one, it goes deep but at an increased angle. On the other it is lifted but at a 90*, so at it's most efficient! I'm sure you heard me mention it! Making the bolt "washer" and backing plates was the trick! It must be srong, of course! I'm a fan as it is very easy to deal with! I might add a lever handle as the rope system has not worked as well as I had hoped! AllthebestRoy
