As per law, Ilayaraja has full rights to file a case against the makers of manjummel boys. Cinema is at the end of the day business. Why did the makers of manjummel boys bank on that wonderful composition of Raja sir's for that movie. We all have to agree that the Guna song and the placement of the song fit so well and made a lot of people to connect and cry! Why did they not use another song? They know they can bank on that composition! And manjummel boys made a hell lot of money! Ilayaraja sir is fine with claiming royalties, may be he will use that money to do something good to the society, he definitely will, and he could anything, that shouldn't matter. A composition is an intellectual property, it cannot be used inappropriately by someone else and monetize based on that. Further, banking on old compositions and remixing them, doesn't promote creativity, it suppresses creativity.

In my opinion, producers can buy out the end product in this its the song but not the creative process that only a composer will undergo which becomes an intellectual property for the composer. So for any intellectual property whether it is sold or not the royalty should be paid only to the composer and the composer and artists has the right to decide whether to share the revenue with the labels or production houses becoz the production house would've already made immense profits with satellite rights, theatrical rights and several other things. This issue is very sensitive and I truly stand with illayaraja as it might benefit many low paid artist's to earn their bread and butter. Music industry is uncertain.

What Raja is doing is not wrong but his approach is drastic. If he expects royalty, he must make an interface available for people to buy it. Say for instance, I want to use Raja’s tune in my short movie. I may have genuine intention to get the royalty but I have no clue how to the get it. That’s the issue that may be causing lots of violation of his IP. I suggest, he should start a website and list all his songs listed in different categories like; personal use, private event use, commercial reproduction on internet and commercial reproduction in cinema use. That way, he will have it very clear how to get the royalty for his songs and he can make the money he wants. Now, the legislation is vague, his royalty availability is vague, basically the whole thing is very vague. Raja should work on clarifying this and then execute his intention to impose royalty on his songs. That way, it will be clear on both sides and maybe he will be able to set a trend for future music composers.

That completes the circle. Illayaraja is not asking money from common man for listening to his songs. He is asking small share when his songs are commercially used to earn money. Again, this man is asking this money to feed back thousands of instrument players who are in poor condition. The funds go there. Unfortunately his image is getting tainted. Our junta is emotional and media driven. They don't understand the genius nor the noble intentions. They don't know the copyright law before 1992, 2012 and 2017. 😢
