I am going to state the obvious. *Click on OTL's channel logo above* go to uploads, and watch *"001 Sigrok and Logic Analysers"* You probably need to go get a snack and get comfortable first. The video is over 1 hour long. It's detailed, goes through all kinds of cheap hardware options you don't know about, how they work, how to use the software, the nitty gritty details about interfacing and hardware limitations. The dude knows his stuff but is practical, down to Earth, and is good at explaining things. I guarantee, because your here, we have a common interest, and OpenTechLab is the kind of channel you seriously want to know about. I have no affiliation, and have never met the guy. The aforementioned video is not monotized. I'm just a simple hobbyist with a nonmonotized channel making a simple suggestion as a viewer like yourself. No one is trying to make $0.002 AdSense by telling you this. The Google AI had to suggest the OTL video at the end of the next one I watched after this one.. because I wasn't smart enough to connect this comment was a gentleman's hint. Well...this message is the rude American version telling you the obvious... *Go watch OpenTechLab now*

Constructive Bytes, The "pirated" hardware as you say is pretty much a datasheet implementation of cypress chip. It is open to anyone. The whole value is in the software so if you want to keep your pirate tendencies at bay, using open source is enough.

Thanks for this video. Just to be clear.. the device you got *is* made in China, but the software (and its name) are not. The device you have is a counterfeit version of the Saleae (made in USA) logic analyzer. Do you have to connect one of the ground pins of the analyzer to the arduino GND?
@Ne555N6 жыл бұрын
Yes all electronic devices must have the same ground in order to make a comunication. GND pin is the "0" volt rail, is the reference voltage for a device. That means arduino 5 volt level is 5 volts respect to his ground pin (Arduino GND) and the same for the logic analyser. If you don't connect arduino GND pin and Logic analyser GND pin together, arduino 5 volt level might be 2,5 volt level to the logic analyser (or other voltage) because the voltage level for every device is relative to his ground pin. If you conect arduino and logic analyser GND pins together they have the same reference so 5 volt level of arduino equals to 5 volt level of logic analyser. I hope you understand the explanation when I was a beginer few years ago I didn't understand the concept of ground now after 12 years I fully understand. If you have any question i will answer to you :). PS: I'm from Spain so i'm sorry if i did any orthographic mistakes, I hope you fully understand the concept and why you have to connect GND pins together. PPS: As a bonus! Some devices have one or more ground pins for analog circuitry and other ground pin for digital circuitry (They are separated). Sometimes you want to measure an analog signal and you need another voltage reference diferent from the digital voltage reference. But this is more advanced stuff... :P

While i can kinda agree that we shouldnt be using pirated hardware or software, and both are alleged here, from my point of view if there wasnt a very cheap logic analyser for my hobby, there is NO WAY whatsoever i would be spending hundred or hundreds on either the hardware or the software; i would just have to go without. Since many new advances and inventions come from hobbyists just like us, i don't see how this would help anyone. Should we just then leave the new inventions to the Chinese and the 'professionals' who can afford the official versions of both?

...and because the original creators do not seem to understand basic retail business. They are still trying to sell this product at 30 times the price of the clones. They should have acknowledged their mistakes, and created a competitively priced option that is no more than double the price. They could have used the marketing momentum/exposure to create something new that they could build a business on. Instead they tried to appeal to emotions and did nothing to salvage the market. The moment the clones appeared the damage was done. Their investment was compromised. The only positive response was to cut the losses and try to use them as an advantage. Appealing to the consumer's emotions, trying to stop/disable the clones, and or whining about the problem is the response that will keep them marginalized or put them out of business. The failure to protect their product is on them. Blaming the consumer or the cloners is a guaranteed path to nowhere. Don't get me wrong, it sucks. I feel for them, but there is no room for emotions in running a business.

@@UpcycleElectronics well, the original creators made their analyzer for professionals. A professional engineer who's monthly wage is 4000 USD can easily make the company purchase a tool that costs "only" 500-1000 USD if it's needed for the job. However, the average Joe home user of course will not be able to buy it. Microsoft solved this with "home edition" and "pro edition" of windows, but you cannot do that with a logic analyzer, because it needs to function the same way (mostly). Well, at least the chinese have now solved this.
