Taylor refreshes a tired 1600 with a $30 set of rings and a hone stone. Will it be good enough to drive a single cab home from North Carolina?

Just found your channel. having done a "One lap of N.A. family vacation in Camper back in '70, I have a bit of nostalgia for this era of V.W. Enjoyed the tech and the process. Hope to see some more.

~19:00 Speaking about the 0.054 shims resulting in a CR of 7.2:1......I'm thinking that might be on purpose for whomever built the motor last. Seeing as the heads have the grove ground into them this may affect the CR. The deeper those grooves, the deck height tool is not seeing those grooves and essentially the overall area of the combustion chamber is changing. In this case the grooves are creating a rise in the CR. So, with a CR of 7.2 plus the groves maybe the CR was closer to 7.6-7.8 using the 0.054 shims? Using thinner shims your CR may be too high? Just a thought 😁

But still lower than if I didn’t put any shims in at all 😂

The sibgle cab bit threw me. A video not on YT I gather.

There’s a very tiny sneak peak at the end of the last video with Clementine. But a video on the single cab has not be done yet. Won’t be until the summer.

I refreshed my single port a couple of years ago. It had shims on bottom of cylinders….I think 40 thou. I asked around and no one made copper shims 85.5. I wanted to move shims to top of cylinder and let the copper shim help seal cylinder-head better. Have you ever done that? Is it possible?
@wickedwerks6 ай бұрын
I have not. I’ve heard that VW did this for a little bit on the early T4 engines and then eventually recalled them and stopped putting them in. But who knows if that’s true. I’d be worried about the constant heat cycles deforming the copper and allowing blow by or affecting the head torque; but who knows. I haven’t done much playing around with that and I’m sure a plenty of argument threads on thesamba about it 😂

How come that those piston pins got so hot? General overheating of the engine? Lack of lubrication? Anyway, nice job, Taylor! 🤘
@wickedwerks6 ай бұрын
General overheating. I had this engine in my Bus during a road rally. Bus was loaded with a lot of equipment and had to make it up a mountain on the hottest day of the year. Cooked the motor pretty good.

The Dynamic ratio numbers of the static compression ratio will be lower. From what I have read. The stock cam should be able to handle 8:0.1 CR. Just my opinion. Are you going to ship the engine to NC?
@wickedwerks6 ай бұрын
No, we’re renting a truck and driving down with all the bits and tools.

Are you on Reddit? I recently put a post on reddit with my blue/white bay getting ready for Spring time (Im in Pennsylvania) and thought someone commented back about getting a single cab in NC. Are you "tuskusbeat"?? lol

Never tried fluid film for cutting oil. Do you like it better than diesel or WD-40? Any reason you went with a three-stone over a dingle ball?
@wickedwerks6 ай бұрын
It’s my first time honing cylinders; never tried diesel or wd40. I was going to use PB Blaster if I couldn’t find the fluid film 😂 I did the three stone because that’s what harbor freight had. I couldn’t be bothered with trying to find a dingle ball that would fit these cylinders though I know it would have been better.

What are you using to clean those pistons? I can’t make mine look that good
@wickedwerksАй бұрын
@@chriswilson6272 simple green, hot water and a wire brush. An ultrasonic cleaner can sometime be helpful, but these were already pretty clean when I took them apart.
