I had this exact engine from PIKO, it was packaged in a polystyrene box and cardboard box, and it had a numberplate DB 98003. Out of three engines called BR 98 this reminds none of them and the catalogue has it as "Dampflok mit tender" (Steam engine with tender) and it appears in many start sets. I no longer run it, but it is very fast (and the tender sometimes comes off) This could be just some factory making them for piko and sending some unbranded

It looks to me like parts of different models that were put together. The boiler, the cab and the tender are those of a German class 24. Some locos of that class remained in Poland after the war where they were reclassified as Oi2. However the chassis comes from something completely different: As you can see in the photo you found, the German 24/Polish Oi2 is a 2-6-0 and the driving wheels are bigger than those of the model. They also made some changes to the loco body. They added water tanks on the sides of the boiler, which doesn‘t make any sense in a tender engine, and unlike the prototype the model doesn‘t have deflectors.

I looked into how PKP classifies their locomotives. The "O" in Oi2 indicates its a passenger locomotive. The "i" indicates that its a 2-6-0 or 0-6-4, which it obviously isn't, and the "2" means it was built in Germany or Prussia. The numbers underneath Oi2 is the serial number. If there was a third letter between the "O" and "i" it would mean that its a tank locomotive.

Hey sam, from what i've seen this loco appears to be based on a german DRG-class 80 tank engine from one of the german manufacturers like pico, roco, or fleischmann, but with the coal bunker chopped off to make room for a tender (hence why the buffers on the back). Don't get the wrong taste of these tho, i've owned one of these little tank engines before and they're actually quite lovely little models, and with insane detail on the newer ones, you should review one in the future, german models are quite different quality wise, this one appears to be a cheap knockoff of one of the ones from the 1990's to early 2000's era

Yeah, those tiny, closely-spaced wheels seem mismatched for the loco size. Also worth mentioning that they where mostly sold in sets and where basically the only models people could afford in the Eastern Block.

It shares the same drivetrain with the PIKO 50500, which is loosely based on the real DB80 and here is the history behind that: The series was started in about 1960's, but there was produced the "true" DB80 model with three axles, same body but different drivetrain and also a version for the startset (a toy basically). I don't know when they added the version with tender but in 1980's it already did exist. As the time went on, they simplified the drivetrain more into the one you have now. Nowadays you can only buy the "proper 3-axle" DB80 marketed as the DB80 and I believe those cheap ones do just carry the product code 50500 and 50501, but they are still based on the old DB80 toy 2-axle versions until now. I had the old 2-axle DB80 made in 1970's as a kid and I bought exactly the same recently again, so I actually own the older smaller sister of the loco you have here, but the drivetrain with gears is basically the same. You may see it in my 2021 Xmas layout vlog and I can eventually provide you with some details for comparison. Anyway, best regards form CZ! You do a great job with the cheap loco's reviews!

It looks like a typical PIKO locomotive from a start set (fictitious type). Your model is in Polish State Railways (PKP) version and it has series of a real 2-6-0 tender locomotive (Oi2 ex german BR24). A set with this locomotive, 2 passanger cars and a track oval (PIKO Starterset 97933) at PIKO Webshop costs 78€ (ca. 70£) so I guess 44£ for just the loco isn't a good price. The chassis is the same for the tender version and the tank engine from other PIKO Start sets (thats why there are holes for buffers on the rear). I think the tender is from the german BR55 locomotive (maybe little shortened)

I would say that this train is inspired by the Polish train you Googled, but very loosely based on it. If you look at some of the "domes" (I don't know the proper name) they resemble those on that loco. If so, the loco it is derived from was originally a German class 24 which stayed in Poland after the war and got renamed. It actually did get that unusual Oi2 classification and number 29 is actually in preservation in Poland. There's even a Wikipedia page about it in English : en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRG_Class_24 PS: I'm glad you were able to give El Cheapo something to do during this troubling time.

Between El Hobo Cheapo, Oi as part of the Running Number, The Death Rattle, and the Thomas the Tank-Like horrid crash at 17:42 the Engine was worth the 44 quid you paid just for the laughs, the Heljan 1361 was the icing on the cake XD "one day folks... one day". The Engine that looks clapped out and junky yet is actually quite good in my opinion would be that Elderly Looking Diecast GWR Mogul at 21:26. Just because she's old and knackered looking doesn't mean she's not a good old girl underneath! I've had many old Brass engines that ran better than they had any right to. hi sam. I think you should be less defensive about this stereotype problem. like i don't think you're a bad person or anything, but it's not a good thing to get defensive about something when people are concerned that you're perpetuating harmful stereotypes. It's a step in the right direction to refit the bit, but it feels kind of hollow with the way you did it.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry, I do feel defensive. It’s been an incredibly rough year, and there’s a lot of nasty stuff in the world. When people seek to remove jokes or comedy from context in order to call them offensive or ‘cancel’ them, I do feel defensive, because as the trend continues, everything becomes off-limits, and we’ll find that we can’t laugh at ourselves anymore. This will be (and has already been) disruptive to the entertainment industry that I love. Distinctions must be made between offensive material with dangerous, malicious intent, and harmless entertainment intended purely to amuse. Not everyone has to feel as I do, and that’s a good thing. The fact that I disagree with the criticism here is perfectly acceptable too, though please recognise that I have now removed the character that was objected to.
@WhirligigGirl4 жыл бұрын
@@SamsTrains this isn't about cancelling. this is about improving yourself so that you don't make the videos uncomfortable for some people. Comedy doesn't work in a vacuum. It's subjective. So that means what you think is funny might not be what others find funny, and if your audience doesn't like the joke, you're doing a bad job at relating to your audience. the trouble is that you weren't really laughing at *yourself*, you're laughing at another racial/ethnic/national group of people. Regardless of the intent that's how it's perceived. Also, I get it. We're all having a rough year. If you want to feel defensive then you're entitled to that. But we're grown ups here (albeit grown ups who like trains an awful lot, occasionally colorful talking ones), we don't have to show it. The distinction you mention is a useful one, and it's why I don't think you're a bad person. But just because you didn't do something harmful on purpose doesn't mean it wasn't a bad thing to do. I'm not really interested in continuing this back and forth, but I will say one last thing. It would be useful for you to consider why it's such a big deal that racist jokes are "off limits," why it's so important that you be able to make racist stereotypical jokes without criticism.
@MrJoeyWheeler4 жыл бұрын
@@WhirligigGirl It's not about improving. It's about idiots like you trying to force others to capitulate to your evil, manipulative ideology wherein your made-up "offence" must be appeased at all times. Sam wants to have a Mexican character based on the traditional stereotype. He can. And we can all laugh at it. Just as the Japanese laugh as the traditional American stereotype of a blond, war-crazed soldier and Americans frequently laugh at the British stereotype of a hat-wearing, tea-drinking Bond villain. Don't pretend that you're a "grown up" when you're trying to condemn someone for not appealing to your insane, illiberal, authoritarian feelings.

The majority of the accounts I looked at were around 15 years of age. Some of whom persisted in posting irrelevant images out of context in order to falsly push the narrative that I'm racist. The rest, rather than just not watching content they didn’t like, as an adult would, fought to try and ‘cancel’ it. Their age combined with their behaviour led me to the conclusion: children. As for being right, it was a subjective discussion - nobody is right and nobody is wrong. They felt El-cheapo was offensive, I did not. People are allowed to disagree. I approached the response the same way I do anything - through humour - but let it be known that I made changes, even though I didn't think they were necessary, because I do not want to offend people, and that matters to me. I'm sorry if it came across as snarky, but be reminded that I didn't agree with those assertions for reasons I've previously explained. Please don't feel disappointed - like all of my skits, they're designed to be meaningless. Don't waste your energy worrying or getting upset about this - try to read it as it was intended! They make other German style trains that are waaaaaay more realistic than this one I can tell you that. I ended trading it for some other odds and ends at my local railroad museum. From what I remember it didn’t stay long there so someone has it and is enjoying I hope.
