I'm often asked my opinion on this or that product. Something related to the tractor world. And while I have experience with lots of things, I don't have experience with everything. So I decided to buy the Vevor/BestEquip Forklift Safety Cage to see what I thought of it first hand. I really like the idea of a lightweight cage to majorly increase the usefulness of your loader. But is this the cage to recommend? Well, no. I'll tell you that right now. Don't buy it. And watch the video to find out why not!

I worked in mining underground for a period of time. We had similar type of cage for working over head in big areas. The danger with these units isn’t so much the construction, it’s the lifting vehicle. Any forklifts or loaders we used for man lifting needed to have cushioning valves and accumulators in the hydraulics. They prevented the lift mechanism from dropping to the ground instantly in the event of a hose blow out or a piston failing. That is where a large part of the danger lies with these units. The first rule of hydraulics, fluid can’t be trusted

Standard forklift I can agree since there is usually 1 pressure hose to lift the boom and uses gravity to lower by dumping the single hydraulic line. A tractor has 2 hoses on the lifting cylinders. So for a sudden drop to occur it would have to blow out in essence 4 hoses at the same time since there are 2 hyd cylinders doing the lifting.
@KingBigBabyJesus
@KingBigBabyJesus 2 жыл бұрын
@@Itsa_Mea Hoses are teed together so if either of the pressure hoses or the hose downstream of the tee fail, no beuno. Even if a return hose blows now you have somewhere for your ram to empty and drop you to the ground

@@KingBigBabyJesus you're forgetting the principal that the cylinder has a piston inside with oil on BOTH sides, so BOTH lines (up/down lines) would have to simultaneously blow for it to come down.

Thanks for the review of this product. As a result, I ordered one right after seeing your video. In the world of grossly overpriced tractor attachments, it's nice to see that someone came out with a LIGHTWEIGHT INEXPENSIVE product that is not over designed and perfect for homeowners who take care of their equipment, don't rip it apart or abuse their tools and use tools with care. There are LOTS of tools I have purchased over the years that have serve me well and that I COULD HAVE destroyed in 60 seconds. But the fact that I can destroy something I've purchased in 60 seconds is MEANINGLESS as long as it can survive NORMAL use. Some comments have suggested that they would prefer to just stand on a pallet which is a RIDICULOUS statement. For $209 bucks, this product is fine for homeowners who are just trying to get things done cost effectively. It would be extremely easy to eliminate all sway and motion with a shorter chain and some scrap blocks of wood. Not that that is even necessary.

Best of luck Martin. Tools designed to product your life shouldn't snap like a twig. That's a personal standard and I would never recommend something like this to anyone else. We all have different standards. Mine are different from yours who are different from the next guy. Doesn't mean my perspective is irrelevant.
@Willy12927

Your evaluation was way too critical. Have used mine for several years now without any problems and it has proved to be a valuable piece of equipment that definitely makes my life a whole lot easier. There are a few steps that I always do to make this a safer experience. First, I adjust the forks as far apart as possible. Second, I use locking clips on the retaining chain so that I can draw the basket as close to the forks as possible. Third, I always use a safety belt. All equipment is dangerous if not used along with good common sense.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 2 жыл бұрын
I could have been more critical, but took it easy on them. Just because something worked for you, doesn't make it safe. The first thing my guys said when they saw it was "this thing is sketchy". I wanted them to be wrong, but there's no way I would use this or recommend it. I'm sure there's better units out there.

I've shoveled snow off my cargo trailers for years using a step ladder and have had the ladder fall over many times. This winter I purchased that exact basket and it worked flawlessly for shoveling snow off my trailers. Definitely not for commercial use but for occasional homeowner use it works fine. Most people use a pallet or something like that so this is a little better with something to hang on to. It's not like your going to be 20 feet off the ground. We are talking six feet or maybe eight at the most.

@@GoodWorksTractors maybe mine is a little better than the one you had because the welds are fine. I looked at the order and it says BestEquip yet it looks identical to the one you had. It is lightweight but for a stepladder substitution it works great. I wouldn't complain if it was heavier duty but it's what was available to be shipped to Alaska for a reasonable price. Once again I will mention it's only six feet off the ground so it's just not a big deal. I've been in commercial man lifts, we have two at my workplace and they terrify me because I don't do heights but six feet just isn't that dangerous. Any failure with this unit would be from operator error or hydraulic malfunction and a heavier basket wouldn't help.

The only way I would put this on a tractor would be if it had a self leveler on it and a way to lock the dump control. These are made for a lift truck that goes straight up and down. The heaviest cage in the world won't save you if the operator accidently moves the control stick left. My Kubota comes with a quick dump position designed to full dump instantly, within seconds that cage will be nearly upside down. Rent a man lift and live to tell about it.

I have one of those. Works great. I have 3/8 chain attaching it to the fork holder so there isn't hardly any play. Put all the wiring in top of large shed at 18ft. My son and I both way over 280 and the only danger I saw was the lift operator and whether your hydraulics hold or not. Mine did for now. It felt much safer and quicker than my 14ft step ladder by far.

Nothing is as safe as a boom lift when you are working overhead. That being said, I get it, boom lifts aren't cheap. Work platforms need to be safe though. Glad you recommended a safety harness, that gets overlooked far too often. You should really look into Star Industries work platforms from Ft Worth TX. We carried that kind in our rental inventory at an equipment rental company I worked at. They were rugged enough for framing crews to use day in and day out. Also, you should look into Arrow Material Handling out of Lenexa KS. Both would be a good addition to your lines of equipment and attachments.

I have the Titan mfg version of this for my 1025R. 36" x 36" . It has been an indispensable tool, I love it. Now I know you are already wincing at the idea of one on a 1025R, but it is not as bad as you think. You just have to do things a little slower and always lower the basket when you move. Also, I made a custom 1000 lb. ballast weight for the rear.

@@GoodWorksTractors I would say the build quality of the Titan is better. That being said, the design is the same. Now (after watching the video a second time) if I can offer some constructive criticism. To be honest, you were more than a little unfair to that company's product. The welds and the chain selection they used are fair game. But, the thin strip at the front of the basket is a toe kick to keep your feet on the platform. It is not there for structure. You also know that it would fold flat, you just did not fold the sides in the correct order. That's like changing you oil by removing the engine first. ANY manufacturer's cage is going to fail if you bend it the wrong way like that. Now I understand not liking a product. But you have to keep in mind the intended use of said product. In this case, keep in mind that it is for occasional use, not day in and day out. Just as one would not buy a 5 series to maintain a city lot, you would not spend between $11k to $18k on a scissor lift you MIGHT use 2-3 times a year. As for safety, 99.9% of the time, it is not the tool's fault, it is the fault of the guy using the tool. Again, criticizing the welds and chains they used were valid, the rest of the video...not so much.

It has 4 ft sides and a 4 ft front height, above your waist line, so you don't feel like you will fall out. It is very well made. When one of use gets a little careless with tilt the person in the basket does not feel like panicing. We use a fabric tiedown strap to hold this tight against the pallet forks. Wo have only used as a one person basket, with tools. But have done a lot of projects around the farm with the basket. I can’t get past the prospect and likelihood of operator error with a human being standing in any contraption regardless of whether the cage is made well or not. My subcompact bucket can drop 12 inches in a second if I push the joystick forward just enough. That 12” sudden drop would be enough to snap someone’s spine.. I did enjoy the “mayhem” style parody of the product though. You made me laugh pretty hard when you tore that thing apart with your bare hands!

We have a safety cage at work for our forklift, and it is a factory made platform and it weighs almost 400lbs. Also that one you showed the side are way too short for osha and look to be the right height to catapult you over the side. The fork pockets look to be about the right size for a forklift (ours has 5" wide forks) but they all have side to side play. Plus ours has a actual swinging door not chains

It just struck me that with a better more suitable cage a safety harness might be tied off to the frame of the forks. Last I knew the OSHA tie off had a 5,000 lb minimum requirement and I doubt this meets OSHA standards but it may be reasonably safe for around the property. If the operator dumps the forks the safety harness might be effective

I think you can tighten up for the forks go in you can slide wood in there and run self tappers and both the wood in place so that your specific forcher using on it will be fairly tight. But I would not use one of those things without a safety Locker to lock it back against and to the pallet Forks themselves

Is it possible to splice in a hydraulic line and switch to operate the loader and bucket by yourself from a lift? (I know nothing so the question may not be reasonable). Sounds like it could be more safe than asking the neighbor. I would chose a different brand. I can weld better than that.

Just me, but I think this product highlights how some products create an illusion of safety without actually being safer than the alternatives. Personally (for low lift heights) I'd consider a sturdy pallet attached to the fork tines safer than this product. Would much rather be holding onto (or be fastened to) the backrest on the pallet forks while standing on a pallet (or even on a ladder on a pallet when stationary) rather than rely on something that provides "safety railing" that may be incapable of stopping a fall. ...but then I also think actual safety starts with that thing between a person's ears rather than blindly applying rules, regulations or "safety" products as all of those things are intended for use in defined situations & scenarios

OSHA requires that any cage of that sort be specifically approved by the manufacturer of the forklift or other lifting device for use with its equipment. I worked in power plants for 50 years and saw several serious accidents involving these cages. About 20 years ago the company I was working for finally banned them on their sites. If the forklift hits a bump or the operator makes a mistake with the lift controls (the loader on my tractor has a quick dump function that would be lethal of there were someone in a lift cage) they guy in the cage can go flying. I've worked from bucket trucks and 100' manlifts that are designed for the job, but these cages are mostly illegal. When you spend your life working around high voltage, safety rules start making a lot of sense. A lot of things I did when I was younger were pretty stupid in retrospect.

Please make a video on how fast a loader hits the ground if loader loses hydraulic pressure - bad hose, bad valve, bad seal, bad casting, etc. It's shocking and a safety conscience person would never get in any cage without the loader being physically locked in place. If the oil ever gets out without resistance, the loader goes slam on the ground in milliseconds.

The cages we use for commercial work are certainly built a bit more stout, but the intent of the cage is positioner only, not fall protection. Use a fall harness tethered to base where it has a 5klb rated tie off anchor point. Cage is not for fall protection, this thing is flimsy

A LITTLE hard on it??? You would have loved the one I made years ago to change lightbulbs in my industrial building. Made to operate on a forklift, not a tractor, it was devised from disassembled steel shelving units and a wooden pallet. Hard to justify a scissor lift when bulbs only burn out every five years or so. I still say it was safer than an extension ladder propped against the nearest roof rafter, then reaching out at full arms length to change the bulbs. I'm making my latest rendition out of an IBC tote cage on forks to prune my pear trees.
