Based on experience, my advice is to ask before you start a project. I crocheted a lovely cream colored triangle shawl for a daughter and she said, "Thanks Mom but I don't wear shawls". One of my sisters lovingly crocheted a scarf and a headband for our other sister who doesn't wear them. So much time and effort to no avail. 😓

P.S. Our church bought skidded socks for residents of a nursing home (their request) and we took paper bags and folded the tops to look like a slanted roof, took liquid chalk and decorated the bags like gingerbread houses, filled them each with a pair of socks, punched two holes on either side of the "roof," tied them with some red and white twine (you can find lots of demonstrations on KZbin) and they looked so, so cute. You're so right, Elise, the packaging can really elevate the gift and make it feel more special.

My Dollar Tree recently expanded their craft section to include SO MUCH YARN. I haven't tried any of it yet, but I might now! Also: yes, quilters have the best color sense. My dad remarried to a lady who quilts, and she's helped me to trust my instincts with regard to color combinations in my knitting and crochet. It's amazing. (And yes, you pronounced "bouclé" correctly. It literally means "buckled" or "looped" in French.)

I have been binging your videos lately. I decided to pick up the hook again. I have been a Redheart yarn and Susan Bates/ Boye hooks kind of crocheter. After watching several of your videos I decided to try some of the budget yarns you suggested and am amazed at the difference it is making in my latest project. So I started listening to what you have said about hooks. I really didn't think that there would be a big difference between hooks. So I ordered a set of Clover Amour. What the heck have I been doing all this time! I am getting ready to get rid of all my other hooks. These are SO good.

The Clover Amour hooks are fantastic. I have been crocheting a long time and generally just used Susan Bates hooks. After hearing both Elise and a few other KZbinrs talk about what great hooks they are, I went out and bought one. It was a game changer. I found a set on Amazon on sale recently, and bought them. I did the same thing and I got rid of all my other hooks. I had started working on a scarf using Joanne Big Twist Prism; I had such a problem with it splitting and I thought it was just the yarn. As soon as I switched to the Clover hook. I had absolutely no problems. They are a dream.🥰

Great ideas! Dollar Tree has some amazing supplies for crafting. I have two or three Dollar Tree stores within driving distance and none of them ever have yarn but I really want to try their yarn out so I'm always on the hunt. I love the little bauble bear. He's my favorite.

I used the Plush and the Teddy to make gifts for my nieces! I made a hamster with the Plush, and it turned out adorable, but I was going entirely by feel because you absolutely can't see your stitches with that yarn. I made a bunny with the Teddy yarn, and that is my new favorite thing for plushies. It's soft and fuzzy without being hard to use. I used Tunisian simple stitch and it turned out great.

I love all of your gift ideas and the tips about choosing colors that go together. I wish I had a Dollar Tree like that. I am lucky to find a small box with 5 to 10 skiens of yarn in our stores. I am making some simple crochet angel ornaments and crochet-covered plastic ornaments.

A good one for tween girls I've made as a crochet gift in the past is scrunchies like you said but I put them in a pretty mason jar or other glass jar from dollar tree stack the crochet scrunchies inside all pretty then crochet a lid that I secure on top with a ribbon and it's really pretty and has even been a hit with some of my young adult friends that love scrunchies too!
