Gorgeous. I have the first quilt my grandmother made. She started it in 1942 and then put it away when she raised her family and finished it in the 1980s. The pieces are about the size of quarters and it is gorgeous! Love quilts but have never been brave enough to start one. Maybe this year I will be brave!

Oh my, fabric is my absolute love. My daughters both adore it too. Both have created amazing pillows this last year. My eldest 13 made a Disney movie inspired piece, by choosing patterns representative of each movie. So apples for Snow White, a blue tie dye for a little Mermaid, etc. My youngest made a pillow for her teacher who is South African and talks about the colours of the plants from home a lot so my daughter made a floor cushion for her from bright flowered print and then used matching ribbon to tie it in with the back. I could imagine a quilt from your fabric mixing masculinity and femininity. Awesome choices & love sock monkey too.

Besides all of the brightly colored, intensely “busy” patterns, you need about 3 yards (PER BED QUILT TOP!) of some “light” neutral (like a solid white or solid beige or solid cream or solid off-white), and then maybe also get 3 yards of a solid navy blue or solid black or solid chocolate-y dark brown of 3 yards (each!) to use as a dark neutral. When you mix brown’s or tans with lots of colors, it makes all of the wild, crazy colors work together better. So 3 yards of some light to medium solid tan will make all of your colors (& wild prints & patterns) make them “behave” with each other better.

My mother in law made us an awesome picnic blanket from old fabrics from things she'd made for my husband as a child and for my boys too. We use that thing everywhere. I'd say make something like that--super useable and washable and not too precious. So much that it becomes precious because it goes to the park, the beach, camping...

Woo!! We need a store like that here in Louisiana. If there is a cheap fabric store like that, I have sure missed it. I have tons and tons of fabrics but mine are all vintage fabrics or bits and pieces I or my mother have picked up at rummage sales, estate sales, etc. Good news is it is about to be rummage sale season again. I have a hard time using the vintage fabrics because I know once they are used, they will not be available again.

Lindsay, great choices on fabric !! Love all the bright colors and patterns !!! What I would do was to find some fabric that I liked, and then I would scan them into my computer. Then I would print them out for background paper, or cut a design out to go a card ,or a scrapbook page, on in a journal. I don't sew, but I do love fabric !! I hope this has given you some ideas on what to do with fabric !! Thanks for sharing, Doris P.

Oh Lindsey I forgot to mention one more thing. If you incorporate two pieces of material that are too similar close together or on the same block you might not be able to distinguish them or see the individual blocks. Everything will meld together. Might I also suggest that you cut only enough for one block, sew it together and see how it looks. That way if you don't like it or things don't fit together you won't waste your material!

wow, thats my favorite thing to do, I have made 8 quilt tops (have not yet gotten them professionally quilted) this year. I would suggest getting some free patterns from the internet my two favorite quilt ladies/stores are Fat Quarter Shop and Missouri Star Quilt Co, both have GREAT tutorials and free patterns, and of course you subsitute your own material to their patterns. You'll have a field day. To have a store that sells material so cheap is amazing, I would go crazy there, we have nothing like that in Michigan, the cheapest material you can find is either at Joanns when its a remnent and you get 50 percent off and you can use a coupon for 10 or 15 percent total purchase, or Walmart remnents or bolt ends. I'm sure you'll make amazing quilts or wall hangings with those patterns. I would buy a few more solids in the pretty colors to balance your palette.

I have an idea for you its right up your alley. Years ago i made a quilt using all our old jeans.It was my first and a bit tricky since none of the pieces were the same size. But turned out great and you can decorate the jeans pieces before you sew them together. I even used the zipper part too. You can stamp on them kids hand prints,bedazzle. Theres no end. Just and idea for old jeans.

What a great haul! Don't forget to look at the backs of the fabrics, too. Sometimes you can get a perfect shaded effect from the wrong side. I remember you talking about lining a coat in an AAC, but don't remember which one, and can't remember if you got that project done, but wanted to let you know how I did a coat for my mom. The nylon lining had frayed so bad under the arm where it needed repaired I just took the whole lining out and redid it. I disassembled it, pressed the individual pieces, and then pressed them onto freezer paper to make a pattern for the new, sturdier lining. Then I sewed those together and reattached it where it was necessary. It worked like a charm. I love all of your videos! A few nights ago I must have dreamed the next AAC came out because I was disappointed to not see you and Lorraine in 17 the next day! I was all over looking for it! lol

I am wondering here about the quality of the fabric. I am a relatively new quilter, and I have made some with cheaper fabrics, and they split eventually. I feel now that if I am going to do all that work, I am only going to use high quality fabrics, like Moda, and Riley Blake, and Robert Kaufman, etc. and just try to get it on sale, or with a coupon.

Hi Lindsay! Have you tried to make your own fabric with muslin or white cotton? It's a lot of fun you can paint, stencil, stamp make any designs you want. You just want to make sure you heat set your fabric after painting, if you don't use fabric paint. I've even used Inktense blocks they work great! I have to agree with Lynn M, as a quilter myself, I know you can accumulate a lot of quilting supplies in a short time and they do tend to take over your space! Have fun. Lynn B

I started watching your blog almost 2 years ago because I had OD'd on quilting. My second sewing machine had died and the more expensive replacement quilting machine I had bought a year before, wasn't working right. Hubz took it to the local sewing machine store and traded it in on what I hoped would be a better, more reliable machine. They took advantage of him something awful. He wanted to surprise me for Christmas and was so proud of himself I couldn't tell him how bad they had cheated him. So I put everything away so I wouldn't get angry (at the store people) every time I looked at it. Also, my family didn't need any more quilted items. (They had OD'd too.) But I have everything but a long arm machine and a quilting frame. One of the things I wanted to make sure you are aware of is fabric bleeding when you wash a quilt.There is some disagreement on washing before or after the fabric is sewn together I always wash before cutting my fabric. You may loose some fabric due to fraying, but you can zigzag the edges if you are worried about this. The most important thing to do is use Color Catchers in the wash, and cold water. They are made by the same company that makes Shout stain remover. They are so effective I use them for all my wash now. I made a cute little zip bag of 2" squares quilted together out of red, white, and blue fabric. Usually, red is the most unstable color and most likely to bleed. But I sprayed a little water on to iron the pouch when it was done, and the blue bled into the squares next to it and wouldn't come out. So I learned to prewash all my fabrics with the Color Catchers. Especially with any batik fabric--it will bleed every time you wash it, forever! Great stash haul, but it is only the beginning! :)

Hi Lindsey, its me Ronda. I noticed your new zippers look like the have metal teeth??? If so be careful using them in your pouches, they can really do a number on your needle and sewing machine. Also using stripes and keeping them even can be a challenge. One sight I saw and from personal experience I've learned they work really well when cut on a diagonal. It enhances the strip and not so tricky to keep straight. Some of your patterns are "big" and would do very well in larger blocks so they can be showcased. All the material is beautiful and you are so clever that you will do very well at making quilts. Can't wait to see them. They are such a pleasure to do and receive as a gift!!!! Enjoy.

Lindsay be very careful buying fabric I had the same idea as you and now I have 5 5shelf shelving units full of fabric juat because I love it. LOL... Seriously. Don't be afraid to waste fabric it can always be cut again and rearranged until you do. Bonnie Hunter does some great scrap Quilts and is a great teacher. She has many free easy patterns on her Quiltville blog she is also on you tube. Have a great time and enjoy. By the way quality quilt fabric here runs form $17-25 except fabric stores here try to sell lesser quality for the highest prices. If I am spending so much time and money on a quilt I want the good stuff. I miss the states for being able to get good fabric at decent prices. My biggest advise is to decrease your stitch width so it will stay together, guess how I know. Patsy
@thefrugalcrafter10 жыл бұрын
patsy fidelak stitch width? I only uses a satin stitch on applique? Do you use the zigzag stick for seaming? Or did you mean stitch length? What do you recommend? And $17-$25, yikes!
@Ms13tink10 жыл бұрын
your right stitch length (I must be brain dead today) it should be no more than 1,5-2.0 my normal length is 2.5 if you have a loose weave fabric you will want the 1.5 it will be harder to rip out seams but it is worth it, especially since you only use scant 1/4 inch seam. yeah that's the price of fabric here before the drop in $ Canadian.

We like th similar colors, i make baby blankets and teddy bears for our local crisis nursery. My question is if I send you some money through PayPal plus shipping, could you pick me up some bright fun colors, cotton fleece and flannel. 1/4 yard pieces from the clearance items, would you be willing to help me? Please?
