In my Career we use the Artec Eva scanners and use these little label stickers just like you bought which work perfect. I just recently got my Pop mini from the kick starter and was unsure if the same method worked since the Artec and Pop use very different technology. I had the same realization that the stickers they recommend are super expensive compared to what I usually dealt with so thank you for saving me the headache and Thanks for the video.

The "special thing" about these is that they are manufactured to be within a very precise circumference and thickness tolerance which increased cost quite a bit. While doing a deep dive into Creaform's VX software I found that the targets had a nominal thickness down to 4 decimal places (mm) registered in the software. This is to help the software remove the targets and replace them with mesh at the appropriate surface location when finalizing a scan. So, if you go cheap you risk anomalies in a finalized scan which will take more time in post-processing. If you're a hobbyist I'm sure it won't matter too much but when precision is absolutely necessary go with the proprietary targets.

I've cleaned up countless scans, done with very expensive scanners, that used the "proper" dots and I can tell you from years of experience, I've had to clean hundreds of those little stickers out of the scans. Maybe they're supposed to go away in the software, but usually they don't.

@@gordontarpley I've discovered that placement is key. With lots of testing and evaluation I've discovered that if the target was within 3mm of an edge or fillet/chamfer the software had a hard time removing it. So, It seams to need an extra bit of space around the target to calculate the remeshing of the surface. If the targets are placed conservatively and stay consistently away from those edges things may work better. Just my 2 cents.

The tolerance of the marker makes no difference. It doesn't use it to adjust scale.
@ArktikosAdventures Жыл бұрын
@@rsilvers129 it's not the scale but the algorithm that decides on how much of the target shall be subjected to being deleted and replaced with a generated surface

That’s a good point. I saw a demo of the Peel3 and the software is based on Creaform VX and it did appear to pick up and use the factory supplied markers very well. It may depend on the software and yes maybe it is looking for markers of a known size and height but I don’t know.

what is the difference between the markers you put on the turning table and the markers you put on the object? do they have a different purpose?

Great idea to cut down cost. One question though - how well do the original EXPENSIVE marking dots remove from surfaces vs the Avery dot-labels?

Can you do this with chorm plated objects

I saw some that were quite pricey online, but they were retroreflective, eg like hi-vis on cycle clothing etc. I wondered if the ones Revopoint provide are like that, or just black and white? Cheers

From my experience using markers with irregular size will help disparity/feature-tracking/feature-matching algorithm to find correct match.

The tracking labels that came with the scanner look like those hole reinforcement stickers for paper. If they come is colors they might work just like them too?

What scanning mode did you use? For the POP II (not sure about the POP) there is this 'marker' mode. In that mode, the scanner stickers that came with it, light up on the screen with red dots (as a confirmation I suppose that the stickers are picked up). Or did you use 'feature' mode scanner option? Thanks for the video.

What scanner is that btw? I have this old statue figure of a French(?) knight and it would be super cool to replicate in diff materials

So you're not actually using marker mode.
@gordontarpley2 жыл бұрын
I've tried it. Works ok sometimes but seems to work better without it on most scans I've done so far ekth these sticksrs.

you are just using feature mode. the 3d scan markers are special. their center is very reflective, and the border is very dark. this allows the camera to register them and align frames just using those points. you are adding small flat features to the part. this changes the geometry slightly and wouldn't work nearly as well as proper markers.
@gordontarpley Жыл бұрын
The other ones change the geometry too. I've done LOTS of 3d scan cleanup on scans that use the proper markers and 100% of the time they affect the geometry and require cleanup. These are scans down with high end scanners. It picks up the surface differences.
@michaeldoherty7434 Жыл бұрын
Nice tip to add “features” that will help in alignment. However I think the factory ones might be better if the software is expecting them to be within a certain tolerance. The factory ones also have a reflective centre and there’s probably a reason for that.
