The record label had 2 songs written by outside writers that they were going to give to 2 of their artists. One was "The Flame" and the other was "Look away". One was going to go to Cheap Trick and the other was Chicago. They gave CT first choice. They didn't care for either plus they preferred writing their own songs. Label said they had to take one so they took "The Flame" because they thought they could work with it more than the other song. They took it to #1. Chicago got "look Away" and they took that to # 1, both in 1988.

Listen. This is the best era of music, movies and life. We loved each other. Our TV shows taught lessons. Most of all we cared for one another and believed in love. If you don't believe me "We are the World". Farm aid etc. So many fund raisers where the celebs didn't get anything they just gave to something that needed help. Much love and keep on keepin on J.

Back in the 80's one of my best friends was living in Chicago and I went out for a visit. We took the train to Rockford, Illinois's to spend the day with her aunt who also happened to be Robin Zander's ( lead singers ) aunt! Both Zander and guitarist Rick Neilson hail from that area. She told us stories about Robin when he was a kid. My friend is related to him on her fathers side. I saw them about 4 years ago, and they still sound fantastic. One of the best shows ever! I digress..ha ha!

The song focuses on the first love of the narrator. The narrator can’t seem to move on after their first love and still carries a torch (i.e. the “flame” referenced in the chorus and title of the song) for their former partner, despite that love being unrequited. “The Flame” (1988): Perhaps the greatest of all power ballads, “The Flame” has a lot of great things going for it. First of all, the production is choice - the acoustic guitars ring and chime clearly, the drums pop and echo just so, and Robin Zander’s vocal sinks into the mix perfectly. And what a vocal - the vulnerability of the verses yield to the mightiest of choruses, and Zander sings like he’s standing on a mountain with the wind in his face and a storm crashing all around him. It’s Cheap Trick’s only No. 1 hit, and it was a monster.
