Hiya! I can totally confirm the pairing with the HD6XX/HD650. -My wee dot II came with the jumpers set for 5654W tubes (6j1..etc.. ((the stock setting for those thinking of purchasing) and gain setting 3 (lowest). Originally set gain to 10 but was absurdly powerful with the HD650 ( which are 300 ohm, but also fairly sensitive and not difficult to drive ). Dropped the gain to the next one down (Setting 5 .. as U mention :) - Which is generally something I usually don't consider doing as I build things with through-put in mind ( Crossover/Loudspeaker design, etc..) So the thought of potentially putting a resistor in the signal path to chill the gain made me a wee bit skeptical. ( Would rather choose the right driver in the first place ;) - HOWEVER: This is Not a crossover, it is a SEPP Tube amp! ;) I was incredibly surprised by the transition ( Gain setting #5 ) and the soundstage and response was a perfect match. TUBES: I had originally swapped the stock driver tubes from 6j1 to RCA 5654/6AK5 tubes from 1958. Sounded great, ...then the following week I threw in a matched pair of 60's GE 5654W drivers ( from RIverstone Audio ) and swapped the power tubes to old stock Soviet 6N6 and have basically been a drooling mess since. *If anyone is bothering to read this, I was one who had Never heard Open-Back headphones before. I've been in recording studios most of my life so all I ever heard both for sessions and personal listening were closed back design. Before I snagged the Senn HD650, I had hesitantly purchased a pair of 32ohm Audio Technica MSR7's. ( i heard they were bright, but don't mind taming the high's a bit for great sub-bass extension. (btw the 2014 Godzilla soundtrack is a must own). When the Senn's got here I was expecting some lush and beautiful sound. ...And, Umm, yeah.. No doubt. They deliver. ( ..currently on my head now and music isn't even playing.) I did grab a pair of sheepskin leather ( and super comfortable ) earpads - Very easy to swap btw,, to get a slightly better seal. My frequency test tones basically start ramping up to a good solid volume at about 24hz. (Plenty low as the sub I have is tuned to 23 hz and the walls shake when a pipe organ gets those low notes ;) All I can say is this is an obscenely good match for the Senn HD650/6xx ( Basically the same headphone with a new paint job ) and would highly recommend to anyone on the fence to just drop the cash and snag it. The tube upgrade to the GE's / 6n6 cost me all of 45 bux and are well worth it. Hope this helps! A happy camper U will be :)

After using the MkII and the 6XX for 7 years, running the stock tubes for a year and then doing some tube rolling...I can say the stock tubes were decent, but most of the after market tubes I bought sounded definitely better to varying degrees. I landed on Voskhod 6J1P tubes for the small driver tubes, and NOS Gold Grid 6N6P tubes for the driver tubes. You can still consistently find matched pairs which is nice, since they were all mostly made in the 60s and 70s. Not sure what space shit those Soviets were doing with these tubes, but every pair I've bought have sounded far and away better than any other sets of tubes I tried. I had to replace them recently which cost significantly more than usual due to...international conflicts. Still worth every penny.

@@bernardoblanchetramirez6032 sorry for the late reply. Coming from the world of the XM3s being my best pair of headphones I have really enjoyed everything about the HD6XXs and the LD MII. Personally I think everyone should listen to this set up atleast once to experience it. Upon putting them on for my first listen I was expecting little to no bass at all because all of the reviews stated little bass output. But I was surprised by what I would call the “presence” of the headphones. Sure it doesn’t have sub bass or little of it. But it has bass for days everywhere else. I use them literally everyday in an open office environment and I don’t listen at loud levels and there is no bleed through. Where they shine the most though is live recordings, guitar rifts (think Buckethead) , and vocals. There was a song called “sun bursts” I believe where I just sat stunned by how amazing it sounded. These are my recommendation to anyone looking for headphones. They are certainly worth their cost.

I've got this amp and it plays really well with my Beyerdynamic DT1770 PRO, especially live rock music. Two things to be aware of: I didn't like the stock tubes, so i got a pair of 5654W's as driver tubes. Also the noise floor could be a bit high, depending on the headphone. I wouldn't recommend it, if you want to use it mainly for IEMs.
@lczp4 жыл бұрын
You really shouldn't put iems on those, as 32ohm is the minimum range it offers. What you can do is use them to colour the sound as a preamp and plug your iems in a opamp like the Atom and Liquid Spark. I do this with my MKIII and the Fostexs TH-X00 as they are 26 ohm, sounds much more stable. Also, nice choice on the drivers, you should also try some Mullards or the Voshkods 6ZH1P-EV.

My LD MK2 on HD6xx sounds amazing but i had an inherent issue with a some kind of motorized noise. It gets worse in higher gain settings and goes up with volume. After months of research i found out that by creating an artificial center tap can eliminate it. Even building a small attenuator can get rid of it too. Otherwise it is a great amp, i tried contacting sword_yang who is know to be its creator, but he did not reply. I only managed to contact him once long time ago. As far as I'm aware the LD MkII is an OTL amp. It's because it is OTL that it outputs more power at higher impedances. It's a waste not to tube roll this amp. The preamp tubes are absolutely dreadful and are a terrible reflection of what tubes can do. On gain level 5 I find it hard to go past half way with my HD660s, HD58x and all my Beyerdynamics. The fact that it is OTL is the reason it doesn't work with Planars (not enough power at low impedance) and low impedance dynamics (Higher output impedance causes too much damping and messes with the low end on headphones like focals).

How does the HD598 and HD599 perform with this amp ?
@goaliedavid304 жыл бұрын
Hey DMS, how would the 6xx on this compare to just buying a headphone with more bass extension and soundstage like the LCD-2c? other than it costing significantly less.
@qupeter12243 жыл бұрын
without an amp and dac, lcd2c wouldn’t be sound good, could be worse than hd6xx without any amp and dac

Hey DMS i have a question, I just bought a pair of used HD800s. How long do high end headphones last? Like driver lifespan? thanks :)
@DMS3TV4 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you treat them and if you blast them. Many headphones from 40 years ago are still around.

Would you recommend these for the HD560s?
@brockercheddlie4 жыл бұрын
560S are supposed to be a linear headphone, so getting a tube amp kinda defeats the purpose. I would recommend something linear to match it like the Drop + THX AAA One.
@bernardoblanchetramirez60323 жыл бұрын
Plus, the 560s are very low impedance headphones, so they wouldn’t benefit very much without the sound getting super distorted (I know I’m kinda late but this is for the people reading this in the future)
@bronzedarkness124 жыл бұрын
your thoughts on the R70x would be great!!
@maols434 жыл бұрын
I had this combo a few years back. I remember that the R70x sounded very good on the LD mkII, very natural and smooth mid range with good bass punch. My amp was tube rolled when I bought it, it had Voshkod tubes if i remember correctly.

DMS, have you encountered any hissing/buzzing with the 6n6ps valves? I own a MKIII and it gets really picky on those. Also, you should definately try out some mil-spec drivers like the GE JAN5654Ws and the Voshkod 6ZH1P-EV, it refines the end frequencies like crazy while maintaining that warmy and expansive soundstage. Sylvania 5654s are also nice.

My MK3 runs with electro harmonix gold pins power tubes + RTC 5654RT, mid gain drive everything thou I dont have 600ohm headphones yet, 300 ohm HD600 easy. JAN5654 in my opinion are worse than RTC (rebrand Mullard)

@ramencurry66723 жыл бұрын
It depends. Only you can answer that question because it’s subjective. It’s like asking do I need Blu-ray or regular DVD when both forms can be good. It also depends on how well trained your ears are on picking up details.
